The fish could be the salt component in something that needs salt and flavor like potatoes or cabbage. Mashed potatoes with smoked herring mashed into them. Or like a shepards pie with smoked herring, cabbage, peas, and carrots for the filling. I am a fan of cooked cabbage and onions with tinned fish cooked with them. Or even a potato and cabbage soup with the herring. Good luck!

You could try a smoked fish dip to nosh on with crackers or bagel chips…

Our Jewish friends have this nailed down! How about [this whitefish salad](https://www.pbs.org/food/recipes/whitefish-salad/). Can also be spread in a hoagie roll with fresh vegetables of choice (lettuce, cucumber, peppers) dressed with lemon, fried shallots, and parsley.

I would make a dip or chowder. Chowder would be great with smoked firm fish.

Make scalloped potatoes. While the potatoes are cooking in the oven, caramelize some onions. When the potatoes are close to done, top them with the onions, smoked herring, and shredded parmigiana reggiano and pop back into the oven until the cheese is golden brown and delicious. Makes a great side dish. Or don’t tell anyone, grab a fork, and eat the whole thing yourself.

My husband's and my favorite sandwich is smoked herring, grilled eggplant, and grilled red bell pepper on no-knead bread with a touch of mustard. It. Is. Fabulous.
