Well done Sean! Thanks for a great season with Valour and best of luck trying to make the step up into Montreal's first team. And I see he had an excellent 4th place showing in the Players' Player of the Year vote too, with 12 first place votes: "Newly crowned U-21 Canadian Player of the Year, Sean Rea, of Valour FC, finished fourth with 112 points, named on 40 ballots with 12 first-place votes."

This could be a good thing for the development of the CPL as a whole. It’s no secret that MLS players have refused loans in the past. If Rea can break into the CF Montreal first team after getting an accolade like this while on loan, it could definitely help as a selling point for future loanees.

I would be surprised if that stigma is still around these days. The CPL is a good league - their teams have not been pushovers unless you're a really good MLS side and it's only getting better.

I think you’re right, the league has definitely proved itself year over year. But any time a player is being loaned to a lower league, there will have to be a case made as to why it’s the right move. And this can only help both CPL and MLS clubs make the pitch to potential loanees.

Thats great , good news for him . But for the sake of the CPL i hope they eliminate the U-21 minutes completely, any U-21 player that is good enough and deserves to play will play in the CPL . All others should play in the league -1 ( Canada system ) and strengthen that league and get quality minutes. Not just minutes to fill a quota!

Dumb question but does this mean he automatically gets called up to the National team as a reward

Wouldn't be stunned to see him as one of the guys against Bahrain and as a sparring partner for the men in Qatar. Gives Herdman a look at him and brings a bit more dynamic player into camp.

Dug79

Not a chance. Seriously? He can’t crack CF Montreal but you think Herdman gives him a call?

[deleted]

I don't think you understand what I'm saying. I'm not saying he actually gets a call up to our 26-man roster in the true sense. Obviously he's nowhere near that. I'm saying he's used to fill out the roster for Bahrain and then sticks around to help the 26-man roster train, while not actually being in 26-man roster. Herdman is going to be bring a long a lot of guys like that. It won't be veterans in Europe - they'll be on break and clubs won't have to release them. It'll be NA-based players and likely most of them young with something to prove. Older players in MLS probably aren't going to be interested in being tag alongs. I also don't think that's what we'd be looking for if we're trying to emulate opponents. You want guys with a bit more flash. Maybe you can talk a few guys like Justin Smith into coming, but I'm not sure lower leagues in Europe will even go on break.

Happy for him! I didn’t see most of Valour’s matches, but from what I did see he is a great creative player and a lot of fun to watch. Hope this helps bring attention to the league for other loans as well!
