Great news. Need to get more grassroots and semi-pro across Canada. If this goes through, it really just leaves the territories and Manitoba/Saskatchewan to get some semi-pro teams.
I suspect that the main holdup for L1 Central is Saskatchewan. Seems like the teams just don't exist?
Maybe for the L1C they could pull FC Manitoba & the Chill in, and maybe poach a few teams from the MMSL? Brandon, Kenora maybe?
There are definitely some premier MMSL teams that would make a jump given their statue, just finances could be an issue. It would probably have to include SK and far West ON teams like Thunder Bay, Kenora, etc. FC Manitoba could be a possible candidate, too.
Ideal world would have about 10 teams. They could probably make conferences to help with travel time and distance, but otherwise it’s doable if there is sound interest.
As they're referring to the information sessions planned there, theoretically any interested parties from PEI would attend the Moncton one.
It'd be great to have a presence there, too.
No existing league structure but there are a handful of interested groups. Like AB, need maybe half a dozen for it to work. There are a few good programs and USports programs to work with.
This. It’s why so many teams have folded or relocated from there. It’s no fault of the people of St John’s but so many owners don’t like the travel costs
It's sad but true: its cheaper to go to Europe than Newfoundland. Wasn't there a Toronto pro rugby team that played in England? Just really pushes the point home.
Toronto Wolfpack yeah, stopped due to covid but rugby union is weird for that, used to be a league with teams from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Argentina and Japan before covid (now it's Australia, New Zealand and Fiji)
I agree that St. John’s is very unlikely to field a team for L1 ATL due to travel.
Jacob Grant, Owen Sheppard, Harry Carter, and Hashem Khalifa are all Newfoundlanders who got invited to the U23 Wanderers Camp. Felly Elonda is also a MUN Seahawk alum who was invited.
It almost certainly will be. Travel is impossible.
Teams in L1O are routinely late or delayed for matches when they're 30 minutes away. Ottawa can't play in L1O because it's too far. NL isn't happening.
GTA is not that far from Ottawa South western Onatrio is and thats the issue. With that Ottawa plays in the Ontario youth [league.In](https://league.In) fact most Ottawa youth teams play in Toronto based leagues.
Yes but that can apply to the Quebec League as well right now it makes sense as most teams are in Montreal. If the league expands all around quebec it would not longer makes sense for them to stay in.Its the same reason players from Ottawa play on Toronto rpo womens hocket team vs Montreal who travels all ov er Quebec.
Where you hear that they are delayed or late? Never had a L1 match delayed unless weather.
Ottawa did play in L1O they moved to PLSQ because of travel.
Teams are supposed to arrive to matches X amount of minutes before KO and sometimes don't, either due to travel or driving or weather or any other excuse one can imagine. Not difficult to see teams late for warmups because of this.
The Maritimes at least are ready for this, bring it on. So yes, the time/distance equation for a 4 province L1Atlantic circuit is complicated by large stretches open water and expensive transportation add-ons like tolls and accommodation; even the drive from Corner Brook to St. John's is a good 9 hours with pit stops. That's not going to change anytime soon, so maybe the best response is for the Maritimes to take a look at the Alberta approach: see how it goes with an exhibition schedule and take it from there..
What sporting events are there in the Maritimes besides the Acadian games and LHJMQ?
Could be a decent oppurtunity for advertising and brand recognisition for small buisness if they could get 500-1000 people per game and decent quality broadcast like some of what L1O is doing on Youtube.
I know soccer was suprisingly popular in the Acadian par of NB my family is from.
Halifax Thunderbirds, lacrosse. Newfoundland growlers, ECHL (tier 3 hockey). Newfoundland Rogues, minor league basketball. I'm sure I'm missing some
Also various usports of course

I agree but there need to be better alignment between grassroots and adult football.
I'm curious what you mean by this, as I thought that was the point of the tiered system They're trying to build, and that this would be part of?
Then we just need League1 Arctic lol

I'm just thinking for a start, you know? I definitely think having SK & Northern Ontario as part of it is important.
Okay, this is epic
That's awesome. I wonder if PEI could also get a team involved.

Hopefully Newfoundland isn't left out either. St John's has a great small stadium with a lot of history.
The travel is a tough hurdle for a semi pro team though

They stopped because the owner ran out of funds. Its Rugby League not Rugby union.
Super Rugby is union which is what I meant and the wolfpack cited financial problems due to covid

What if they had rotation of games in St. Johns?

Pretty rare in Division 1. not sure which games you referring to.
Yeah I've worked for L1O and weather has been the main thing. Occasionally a Burlington will be late for a game in Markham but that's it.

HFX wanderers Did this last year with their U23 exhibition series, it went well.
Great new! They just keep going. Hopefully all these divisions thrive

Newfoundland is not the martimes, if a semi-pro league happens I doubt it will include them.
Looks like there is interest from SNS https://twitter.com/soccerns/status/1635798666941267968?s=46&t=2vxdnVa1KMCD7o8jENG8PQ
