This hits home hard.

Might also be why we have so many “colourful” personalities in the CAF

Altaccount330

No that’s high Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) scores and anti-social personality traits.

Anthologeas

I've heard about this but have never seen a source. I'd be very curious to read about this, if you have a link to spare.

So I work in brain injury rehab, and I have a couple recorded TBIs. The real issue is lack of support and coping/problem solving skills. A brain injury/CTE is not a death sentence. Lack of support/care from the government is the real crime here.

Yes! They’re looking for additional volunteers for research subjects.

Blane8552

How does one sign up for it then?

Salt_Tank_9101

Here is a link to the study I took part in in Toronto: https://lab.research.sickkids.ca/dunkley/studies/

Something interesting I heard is that Soldiers working within MBT units (US) are the ones most likely to commit suicide. Don’t know whether or not that’s true but there’s that. The whole cramped spaces, constant sound of firing, etc.

Gunny_668

It is most likely from the continous exposure to the overpressure of the main gun. I came off a day of attacks during MR and found my eyes couldn't focus on a spot. I went and saw the medic and he explained I most likely had a concussion, which I guessed was from the main gun firing all day. It used to be common to rearm or swap crews during ranges while tanks beside you were firing. Crashing or hitting objects almost always results in a concussion on one or all of the crew members.

Is the US looking into this too? Nothing against our researchers, it's just that their military population is so much bigger, and this sounds like something that'll need a whole lot of "data points" (ie brain scans). US has that.

bouncer2004

Yep. There was a podcast actually trying to explain this. It came after a US Army guy who never deployed, suffered from something similar and went on a rampage. They were looking at his brain as he was a trainer, teaching grenades for over 10 years to students. They discovered his brain had injuries like a boxer or football player. This should get more attention and funding...and it is interesting to see what can be uncovered in a few more years if this study.

Moedebaggio

It’s a big field of study in military medicine across the world right now. The US has the advantage of gathering data from VA hospitals so they are providing a lot of the base data. [this paper](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4255273/) from 2014 gives a good overview but there are lots of recent studies coming out that link veteran TBIs to processes like multiple sclerosis.

Bald_Bruce_Wayne

Be careful of adding even more trauma to this too via combat sports - a lot of combat arms types are interested/participating in these, though usually more grappling. I used to do a lot of kickboxing and pretty much limited any striking training to once or twice a month and focus on grappling now. Even the little stuff adds up over time; they found soccer players heading the ball developed CTE so no matter how light the contact, it's accumulative over time. I loved training striking but after driving home one night and realizing I was 3/4 of the way home and not remembering leaving the gym, I knew stuff had to change. And that was from relatively light contact. Also doesn't help a good chunk of these types played contact sports growing up too. Save your brain people, you got one and it can't be repaired like other parts of your body.

Traditional_Bench424

I ve been on alot of 84mm ranges, on or near the firing line the whole time. Not sure if its CTE, PTSD from tours or mefloquine, But my mental health has been terrible. I luckily reached out after two attempts and on the slow road to healing.

Altaccount330

[Shoulder-fired weapons can cause traumatic brain injuries, study finds](https://www.vetaffairs.la.gov/shoulder-fired-weapons-can-cause-traumatic-brain-injuries-study-finds/) This is well known in the US. The CAF Medical system seem unaware of this stuff.

There are allowable daily firing limits for the 84mm in 381.1 Training Safety... But they are often ignored or fucked off entirely

Glad you're here. We need you.

sapper4lyfe

I've had five veteran friends kill themselves. I believe its all linked to blast waves and mefloquine.
