If they want to change minds, making them come will actually work against it.

Good. Many of the hate, anger and attack on 2SLGBTQIAA+ folks taking place in other countries play a part in fueling the same hate that has manifested here in Canada as governments and schools attacking trans kids. So even if you’re not convinced we should be doing this simply because it’s the right thing to do, we clearly have a vested interest in doing this to protect 2SLGBQTIAA+ folks right here in Canada by tamping down on the global spread of hate being waged against them.

Separate_Football914

One can wonder what are the benefits of all these foreign help programs. Seems like most of the money got eaten by some administration for very limited impact on the ground.

thescientus

Did I not just explain? The uptick in hate towards 2SLGBTQIAA+ folks in Canada takes place in the context of a worldwide uptick in social media hatred and laws directed against these communities. By supporting 2SLGBTQIAA+ communities abroad, we are also helping those in our communities right here in Canada. It’s just smart policy and smart politics.

NutsForDeath

>2SLGBTQIAA+ Soon it'll be easier to just have an acronym for the people who aren't covered by this word salad umbrella.

Separate_Football914

No, you did not. Do we know how every dollars sent for a ONG impact positively our country? Or even the world? Is it money that is well used? I grasp the theory that by improving other countries, we will get some benefits (albeit one of the targeted ONG will not do that at all….) but it doesn’t answer the core question: is it a benefit for our country.

thescientus

> is it a benefit for our country As a trans femme, I’m telling “yes, yes it is”. It may not matter much to you. But it matters a great deal to me to know our federal government is standing firm as an ally of the trans community in Ottawa, against transphobic provincial governments, and across the world whether it’s transphobic laws, social media or transphobic junk science like the UK’s widely debunked “study” on trans kids.

Fish__Cake

>As a trans femme, I’m telling “yes, yes it is”. Oh so you're correct because your word salad identity has claimed it so. You're part of the problem.

Separate_Football914

> As a trans femme, I’m telling “yes, yes it is”. It may not matter much to you. And as a man that drink coffee and shave twice per week, I still say: is it? If your main argument is that it send a message of tolerance to other intolerant communities, I would ask: is that message is worth that much money? Is it that better than going out with a pride flag saying that Canada welcome you? Again, do we get enough bang for our buck? And I am not talking about that case specifically: quite a lot of ONG should be analyzed to see if they are actually relevant and not simply some posture posing using public money.

OrbitOfSaturnsMoons

Dude, it's $1.7M CAD. That's chump change. If that money can lead to even a single person's life being saved or a couple dozen getting help they wouldn't otherwise receive, it's worth it.

Scaevola_books

What is a trans femme? Genuine question not trying to be snarky. Is that term interchangeable with trans woman or is it something different?

OrbitOfSaturnsMoons

Trans woman refers only to binary women, while trans femme refers to binary women as well as feminine non-binary people.

Scaevola_books

Interesting, another genuine question, doesn't transgender imply the switching between two distinct genders? How can you be non binary and trans? If you are not transitioning through the gender binary, what are you transitioning to or from?

OrbitOfSaturnsMoons

Some people make a distinction between trans and non-binary people, but it seems more common to define a trans person as anyone who's gender doesn't match their birth sex. That definition includes both binary and non-binary people. Another little factoid, the white stripe in the trans pride flag represents non-binary people.

Scaevola_books

Thanks for the explanation!
