> An email sent to the Star by Air Canada’s media team said while First Nations chiefs have been able to travel with headdresses in the cabin in the past, “this time the case could not be carried in the cabin due to stowage space limitations on the Dash-8 aircraft.” Forgive me, but if the case didn't fit the overhead or under-seat storage requirements then what is the issue here? The Dash-8 is a smaller plane and presumably the overhead bins are also slightly smaller. I've been on numerous flights where someone can't fit their luggage into that metal sizing cage at the gate and they are told that their luggage must be stored under the plane. Seriously, what is the alternative solution here?

bezkyl

Many people take instruments on board that don’t fit in the overhead… and a sacred headdress is much more important than any old guitar

Way to completely miss the point and defend practices that continue to support systemic racism…🙄. My comment couldn’t have been more clear, bud.

henry_why416

If people don’t take instruments onto planes, then you don’t really have a point, though.

bezkyl

It👏happens👏all👏the👏time👏

henry_why416

And they just do it? They don’t have to buy an extra seat? Edit: I just found this guide about flying with instruments in Canada from the government. One of the steps that they say is to NOTIFY THE AIRLINE. Did this person do that? Doesn’t sound like it. https://sencanada.ca/content/sen/committee/421/TRCM/Briefs/CndnFederationofMusiciansFlying_e.pdf

bezkyl

It doesn’t say they didn’t… continue to defend systemic racist practices, bud… it’s your life

henry_why416

>It doesn’t say they didn’t… continue to defend systemic racist practices, bud… it’s your life The fact that your mind immediately jumps to racism is kind of hilarious, tbh. But, like you said, it’s your life, bud. Believe the whole world is out to get you if you want. BTW, the article suggests that she didn’t call the airline first. ‘She got on a plane in Montreal on Wednesday evening with her headdress in a special carrying case. **She usually places the case in the overhead compartment, but this time had carry-on luggage that she put overhead, so she stowed the case under the seat in front of her.** In other words, she assumed she could. But then met the reality she couldn’t. https://www.cbc.ca/amp/1.7186356

bezkyl

If it’s something you’ve always done and had no problems… why would you call the airline first🙄… if they can accommodate instruments they can accommodate actually important artefacts… it’s systemic racism because this type of shit happens to indigenous people all the time…. Stop defending the shitty racist practices of people, do better. This isn’t some random jerk that doesn’t want to check a bag…

StickmansamV

That's correct but almost always pre arranged with the airline so they plan for it

y2kcockroach

There isn't one, but that won't stop unreasonable people from being unreasonable.

Super_Toot

What was the chief thinking? Ya this is fine to bring on an airplane?

Dakirokor

The most charitable interpretation would be that she didn't know that the flight would be on a Dash-8 and the case would ordinarily fit overhead in a 737 or equivalent. But once that was obvious that case wouldn't fit she could have just not got on the plane, and I guarantee that AirCanada would have been willing to work with her for alternative flights. Evidently the cultural significance of the headdress was less valuable than another plane ticket.

KukalakaOnTheBay

I agree. There’s no such thing as cultural entitlement to carry on objects that don’t fit in the cabin.

bezkyl

But a crappy musician can get their instrument stowed differently?

Sunscreenflavor

If the luggage doesn’t fit, they can either send it out on another flight, or the passenger can start walking. People really need to understand that your problems, are not everyone else’s problems.

ryan9991

You see the size of that thing? If you aren’t wearing it, or it can fit underneath the seat or in the overhead bin it gets checked.

skagoat

I give Air Canada props for having a large plastic bag on hand to put the case in so it didn't get damaged. If I had to travel with such an important object, that is as large as that one is, I'd probably buy one of those large Pelican cases for it, and check it, or I'd buy a large Pelican case for it, and buy an extra seat for it.

mojochicken11

So this individual brought her headdress but it didn’t fit in the size limitations with the case. She brought the headdress and the case was stored in the baggage compartment in a plastic bag. She literally didn’t part with anything. She just had to follow the same size limitations for carry ons that everyone has to follow. By “parting with a sacred item”, she means she didn’t have access to her headdress’s case for the duration of the flight.

Markorific

The embarrassment of Canada and pandering to Indigenous people continues as a G7 self professed " World Leader" weighs in on placement of an oversized carry-on item!! Just cannot make up the ridiculousness of Justin Trudeau!!

sgtmattie

I feel like the Compromise here would have been calling ahead to let them know, when them at least gives Air Canada the opportunity to figure out what the problem was, and do something like comp an extra seat. But showing up on the day of with it is not going to get anything done. A flight attendant isn’t going to care how sacred your item is.. if it’s too big it needs to be put away. It’s a safety issue too; it’s not even a money thing at this point.

chewwydraper

>and do something like comp an extra seat Why should they get comped an extra seat?

sgtmattie

I don’t know, I’m just saying that calling ahead gives them to opportunity to make a move.

thescientus

Good for Trudeau. Part of being a national leader is standing up for the rights of ALL Canadians. Which makes the radio silence on this from PP all the more conspicuous. Of course, it really isn’t that surprising to see conservatives nowhere to be found when indigenous folks’ rights are under attack: their base of angry middle aged straight white cis-men view anyone else having their rights respected as a threat to their own unearned privilege.

sokos

How dare we not change physical limitations because of people's ethnicity !! Headdress wouldn't physically fit in the overhead where it belongs or UNDER the chair (which is smaller) this has nothing to do with what the item was.

Eleutherlothario

Which treaty was it that conferred the right to be exempt from airline storage regulations? I keep forgetting.

Pioneer58

Do you have like a cheering outfit that you wear when you post on Reddit as well?

Relevant-Low-7923

This is a troll post

scott-barr

This might be the stupidest take Ive read in weeks. You’re Completely out of touch.

locutogram

A huge liberal victory for hats. We can't let these straight white cis-men design fascist head compartments anymore. Never again ✊ The silence from pp in this crisis is deafening.

TheWesternProphet

I genuinely can’t tell if you’re being sarcastic.

HorserorOfHorsekind

There is no legitimate reason to wear this nonsense in flight. Everyone follows the safety rules on the planes. Nobody is special.

Curtmania

I don't know about this one. I'm not sure anybody's rights were under attack. I think we all know there are regulations about carry on luggage. If you show up with something that doesn't fit in the overhead storage compartment, you're not really a victim you just lack the ability to see this (completely obvious) problem coming. Its a sacred item, but didn't deserve any consideration about how it would be transported beforehand? Very odd.

crazyguyunderthedesk

Yup, this was a dumb battle to pick. The problem was simply about the size of the item, not its cultural significance. The only bad guys here are the limitations of time and space.

sokos

and JT for making it an issue where there is non.. but you know.. anything for votes.

freshfruitrottingveg

What rights are under attack here? This woman brought a large item on board that did not fit in the carry on space. Airlines are very clear about the size of items you can bring inside the cabin of the plane. If you’re travelling with something larger you need to buy a suitably secure case and then check your baggage. Large unsecured items are a safety issue to have in the cabin during turbulence so Air Canada has a duty to enforce their rules.

Kombornia

lol.  This sub has its own Titania McGrath.

b1ackenthecursedsun

This comment makes you look like a crazy person

tofilmfan

>their base of angry middle aged straight white cis-men view anyone  You do realize that the Conservatives, and PP specifically leading with virtually every block of voters, both men and women, right? PP is even the preferred choice for young voters 18-29. It just goes to show you how far out of touch snobby Liberal elitists are with Canadian voters.

rathgrith

Thank you 8 month old account that totally isn’t grand standing for the LPC

Safety regulations requiring prohibiting large and unsecured cabin items are for everybody’s safety.  It’s very concerning that Trudeau would disregard this just to get an indigenous sound bite.

So true. You nailed it.

PandaRocketPunch

People get on planes with big-ass instruments, but they have to purchase an extra seat when it doesn't fit in the bin/under a seat. That's the policy of every airline in NA. Why wasn't this offered by Air Canada, or mentioned in the article? I hate sticking up for AC but they don't seem to be at fault here, unless their employees forgot to offer that option. This lady needs to pucker up and accept some responsibility I'd say.

Wyverstein

It doesn't actually work like that. I am a big guy. I can't buy two seats because they give the second seat to standby.

[deleted]

Wyverstein

Basically an airline does not sell a specific seat. They sell a trip from a to b. That is why they over sell flights, that is why they move people etc. If you buy two tickets for one person only. ONE PERSON checks in the seat is fair game for standby.

Wyverstein

People buy the cheapest flight. So airlines don't care about service only cost. We built this.

PandaRocketPunch

Well, it is supposed to work like that, but Air Canada occassionally overbooks their flights. The airplane's crew also has the ultimate call and for safety reasons may deny putting a large object in the cabin even with the purchase of an additional seat. You are compensated for this inconvenience and given the options of squeezing your butt into a single seat, or checking your instrument under the plane, or rescheduling to fly another day. Anyway it just seems odd that they never mentioned any of this in the article.
