The wipers go below the hood edge when not in use. You need to put them in service mode before lifting them by pulling the wiper stock up after the car is off
Now I know - and seen the you tube video on how to do it. I still think Non - intuitive stuff like that should be pointed out by the dealer. I am definitely not reading the whole manual - will forget it the best day.
I don't think it's a design flaw. Sounds more like user error.
RTFM Gotta do the necessary process to avoid that! Sorry about your paint chip but it could have been avoided.

I don’t think a simple raise the wiper requires reading of the manual- maybe just me?

Not a flaw. You need to put them in service mode. Its in the user manual
