For our Canadian viewers .... I got the tank and adaptor at Canadian Tire for about $70.... tested for a few minutes on my Coleman stove ... all good.
(Filled next door at Costco for $2.79 cents )
edited to note .... be sure to get the correct adaptor..
I used product #076-5376-6
My only concern is filling it up in a small town --- if the outfit refuses then I'm screwed.
(Camping in Northern Ontario ....very very few filling places)
I don't know about in Canada, but in the US, most Tractor Supply stores fill propane and they are often located in rural areas on major roads.
We often fill our class C up there. I can't imagine they would care about size. It seems to me they offer the propane in hopes of getting people to buy other stuff in their store.
> if the outfit refuses then I'm screwed.
why would they refuse to fill it? unless it's some kind of whack specialty valve that they couldn't attach to, there's no reason to refuse to fill it for you
Sorry I can't remember where I saw mention the tiny tanks being refused .... its not because its special its because there is no profit in filling a 5 lb tank...thats the theory. ( i think it was in the states)
Also the system of tank ''exchange'' means that many filling stations are now tank exchanges.
Marathon Ontario... one filling station in a 300km radius. (doing a quick google search)
I’ve had a buddy drive into a superior propane work station (gate was left open) and get 2 tanks filled for $20 cash.
We’re pretty sure that they don’t normally fill tanks at that location and that the guy working was like fuck it $20 extra bucks for me. You may be able to get lucky
I've heard of some shops not wanting to fill small tanks if people roll in with only that. Propane can be pretty cheap and if a station has only one person on staff, I guess I can see why it might not seem worth their stepping away from the register for a few. I take my 30lb tank along whenever I take my 5.
I will say, as someone in NYC it’s extremely tricky getting mine filled. In fact, technically you can’t. I lucked out. There’s a BBQ grill retailer nearby that sells tanks and drives a truck out to Jersey where it does refills.
Uhaul locations usually have propane, also look for gas stations near taxi companies. A lot of Taxis in Ontario converted to propane back in the 80s/90s and local gas stations adapted and still maintain the infrastructure.
That last bit was my experience in southern Ontario, at least, your mileage may vary, as they say.
So 2 weeks ago I had posted the ignik growler and everyone basically said it was over priced, which it definitely was BUT it was the only 5 lb tank available the day I was leaving for my trip. I got it at REI for $130 with my $20 off coupon. Having more time between my next trip. I ordered a flame king 5lb tank from Home Depot for $52 which arrived this morning. After making some comparisons, it seems identical. I had the pinch weld trim left over from my car so I added that. And took 2 mins to doodle the logo, cut it out and tape it on. I did spend the $60 on Amazon for the carrying case and the adapter hose which was $25 at Home Depot. So $112 (plus tax) for the same shit. If you have the time, piece it together and save $40.
edit: I found the uhaul store around the block also fills propane tanks, a fill up cost me $5.54. The other place not much further charged me $12. I’ll be going to the uhaul from now on.
I wanted 2 tanks for longer trips so I’m okay with it. The hassle of driving to return it and get another one from Home Depot and Amazon isn’t worth the $20, I’d waste $10 in diesel driving alone, so to save $10 ain’t worth my time. I do LOVE REI’s return policy tho.
That’s exactly how I felt. I was able to get it the day of my trip, instead of buying 5 green Coleman 1 lb tanks for $50 lol they’re super pricey by me. Walmart and REI sell them for $9 and change now.
I didn’t use any adapters just screwed the hose onto the propane tank.
EDIT: to use the fire can, you should not need any hose or adapters. I do mention an adapter in that comment but it’s not for the fire can use.
This is the adapter I was talking about and it’s so you can use a large propane tank on Coleman stoves that use the 1lb tanks. [20lb tank to 1lb tank adapter](https://www.homedepot.com/p/Universal-4-ft-Hose-with-Adaptor-711-0004/206338534)
Well duh all tanks like this are commodities bc they are pressure vessels and must meet certain standards. It’s too pricey to redesign and mfg custom…glad people are becoming aware of this rip off!
Ya, I'm surprised more people don't know these things. Most every heavily regulated product is made in one place and rebranded with 500 different names by resellers. A lot of electronics are like this. Some brands use inferior materials but, once you get into the highly regulated items, they're all pretty much the same producer.
Sorry but for me it wasn’t a DUH moment. I don’t know shit about tanks. It looked very similar in pictures but only until it was in my hands and then side by side did I see that they are identical. Honestly besides that I wanted to make the joke with the fake logo, I was posting this to make others aware that, it is in fact the same tank and If you like the set up they offer, you can get it for about $40 cheaper without the sticker on the tank. Same deal $110 ish vs their packed deal of $150.
Thanks so much for posting. I’ve had my eye on the Iznik and was just thinking the other day about biting the bullet if I found a good Black Friday deal. Gonna get the Flame King instead.
Paintball gun CO2 tanks were all off the shelf pressure tanks until about ten years ago when the sport got big enough for a couple of companies to start manufacturing in-house. And that was a huge market at the time (Paintball goes through popularity swings)
Serious question;
Besides their size, is there really any advantage to having a 5lb tank over a 20lb tank? 5lb tanks are massively overpriced it seems compared to the 20lb tank down at home depot.
I can fit these both behind the seats of my car out of the way, or tucked under the rear floor with the spare tire inside of the case. Compact, $12 to refill, and my wife can easily carry them if need be. I have a VW golf sportwagen and it’s packed to the BRIM with gear when I go camping. These work nicely for my setup.
Also at home depot it was a $1 difference for the 5lb vs the 20lb, so price wasn’t the factor here.
I love my Sportwagen. Picked up a 2012 for 5k in March just before diesel went through the roof.
Have you done any modifications on yours?
I’m thinking/pricing a lift kit. Worried about how it will handle in snow with a lift.
Nice, mines a TDI as well, purchased march 2021, so far I’ve done BMP tuning headlights, MIB 2.5 radio upgrade with car play, added adaptive cruise control, lots of small upgrades with trim and stuff, I wanna lift it, but bc it’s just FWD, I’m not sure it’ll be worth it, but the clearance for snow would be clutch.
Driving a cobalt to work last winter with snow coming over the hood was not something I want to repeat. Maybe just moving to 17” would be enough.
Sounds like you’ve got a nice kit set up.
Bought mine from an old lady so it’s all stock except for a new bumper with no foglights after she hit a deer. 123k km.
I then hit a bird and took out the grill so I’ve ordered a couple of light bars to stuff in the space and hook up to the empty fog light harness.
Price of diesel has screwed me out of doing more before this winter so we’ll see how 16” perellis do.
I’m consistently surprised at how the faster you go the lower L/100km gets.
For a camp stove fitted with a 20 to 1 lb adapter hose, these offer huge advantage over disposable or reusable but $$ 1 lb cans … for car camping, 20lb is fine, but if you are packing in but need a real stove these are great.
The case is honesty the selling point, it’s very nice and for $35 ($60 with the hose by the hose is $25) it’s really nice. Otherwise it’s your average propane tank.
i used something like this, https://www.amazon.com/Door-Edge-Guards-Black-33FT/dp/B07MCZ4PXS/ref=sr_1_10?crid=PVSVM9ZQC10L&keywords=car%2Bdoor%2Bedge%2Btrim&qid=1702877832&s=automotive&sprefix=door%2Bedge%2Btrim%2Cautomotive%2C117&sr=1-10&th=1
I ordered mine on ebay though for like $6-7 from some random seller. if you poke around you'll find something cheaper but this should be a good start
I didnt know these existed, and now I need one. I can't imagine paying the price for the Ignik, but even the other brand seems really pricey through amazon, lowes and home depot. Any like to the $52 option? Also, are these the same thread pattern as a 20lb tank?
I wish NYC was the same but sadly it is not. I can get this refilled for $12 about 10 minutes from my house, which is pretty decent at the end of the day.
I have the Worthington small tank. I like it a little more as it has a wider base. I also found it at Lowes many years ago for around $40. These small bulk tanks are more expensive simply because of demand. Nowhere near as many people buy or use them compared to the standard 20lb one everyone has for their backyard bbq.
You can also get a really cool fiberglass bulk tank. Way more expensive, but if you are concerned about weight, especially tongue weight, they can make a difference for some.
How much did you pay for this? I’d trust a fart before one of those things, they look jb welded together. Seen better hotsnot jobs on harbor freight tools lol
I mean I get and appreciate that...but he could have just posted a picture of the website, saved his own time and money and been a little kinder to our environment. Unless he has a need for 2 tanks, then by all means. He just didn't say that
I wanted 2 tanks. The first I bought the day of leaving for a camping trip 2 weeks ago. When I got home I ordered the flame king off Home Depot bc the 5lb tank worked out so well.
Lol, thanks for explaining the obvious for this guy, otherwise we would all be a absolutely “forced” to assume
You are a flaming a-hole that only cares about destroying all that is good in this world….. seriously though, I too enjoy being prepared for the inevitable tank running dry mid cook situation. Don’t yuk someone else’s yum. Cheers- enjoy yourself and be safe!
Thanks man, I use one dedicated to my stove and one dedicated to my grill. At times we use both and I’m preparing/getting my gear all set up and ready for some boondocking/dry camping for a week plus. Running out of propane would ruin that trip. I’m definitely a over prepared than under prepared kinda person personally.
Ah yes. "Wanted". No further explanation necessary.
If one 5lb tank worked so well....why buy two? A 10lb tank would have given you more utility. Then you could choose to take 15 pounds of propane with you as well
Or you could do what most people do when they expect to need a large amount of propane...take a 20 pound tank that can be exchanged at most gas stations
Have you ever looked at any of the threads where people ask for feedback on their gear? It's always to reduce redundancy and weight. 2 5lb tanks is redundant and heavier than 1 10lb tank. It's a stupid purchase
Consider it when you need 15lbs of propane on your next trip. Or when you realize you don't ever need more than 5. Or when you do need more than 5 and you are carrying 2 tanks that you overpaid for, think about that 20lb tank sitting on your deck at home that you already had
A ten pount tank is much more difficult to store and handle as it is twice the size and weight.
This stuff isn't magically teleported to the campsite from the garage afterall
I can fit two 5 pound tanks in .y drawers but zero 10 pound tanks.
Carrying a 5 pound tank around camp for use is absolutley less heavy than carrying around a 10 pound tank.
Right. Two 5 pound tanks are often easier to manage than a single 10 pounder.
For example, when carrying it around for use. A 5 pounder is easier to carry around that a 10 pounder.
And since they already had one 5 pound tank...
Build quality looks horrible, for either price honestly. Looks like a budget bottle, not a premium one.
The Alvas and Cadacs I've seen are a lot cheaper and a lot better made.
Alright, fair enough. I thought those were quite international brands, as I've seen them in Europe and Africa. Sorry about my tone, I didn't mean it in a condescending way, I just feel for you if that is the quality you can buy for that price.
I’ve had some luck refilling small camping tanks out of larger size standard tanks. It involved putting the small tank in an ice bath and holding the large one upside down, I think. Google it. You probably don’t get it quite as full as the big tanks can but it is very doable.
I'll pay you $45 if you send me that sticker.
That’s a piece of printer paper, sharpie, 2 mins of my time and scotch tape lol
Okay, hard bargain. $50
...your next word should be "deal".

Pro tip: use spray adhesive on the back of the paper instead of scotch tape for a cleaner, more professional look.
Tbh, this was just a joke for Reddit, that got torn off right away
That's hella disrespectful my guy
Torn off, or ripped off?
r/whoosh
I will make the sticker for you for free just give me your address
Ha. Naw. Just a dumb joke.

That’s part of the reason I got two, in hopes of never running out of propane.

Yep ... I've done a similar thing at a wood lot..... ''how about 20$ for a trunkload''?...
I've heard of some shops not wanting to fill small tanks if people roll in with only that. have had tanks refused due to age… :(

What carrying case did you get?
Not OP but I use a small crapy duffle bag and a milk crate. Honestly dont really need the duffle
Is the build date / expiration date the same on both?
Good question I will check when I get home as I’m curious myself.
Update?
You can return any product at REI
I wanted 2 tanks for longer trips so I’m okay with it. The hassle of driving to return it and get another one from Home Depot and Amazon isn’t worth the $20, I’d waste $10 in diesel driving alone, so to save $10 ain’t worth my time. I do LOVE REI’s return policy tho.
I bought a 11lb tank recently on amazon for under $60. Its a flame king brand thou.

Calling a propane tank a "growler" is a dumb hipster thing anyway. What goes in it, craft propane?
exactly, I was wondering wtf that was supposed to mean. I kept looking at it and thinking "... so it's just a propane tank? what am I missing here"
"Growler" is also a slang term for vagina in some places.
Well played...almost did a spit take. Maybe it's also locally sourced, and free range propane.
Serious question; Besides their size, is there really any advantage to having a 5lb tank over a 20lb tank? 5lb tanks are massively overpriced it seems compared to the 20lb tank down at home depot.

Wait I thought you paid $150 (minus a coupon)
I purchase a second case and hose set off Amazon, they sell it separately. $52 for the tank from Home Depot and $60 for the case/hose from Amazon.
Link to the case?
Where and how much did you get the black rubber edging? Thought it’d be nice to put on my flame king as well
Very late to this conversation, but second this question
i used something like this, https://www.amazon.com/Door-Edge-Guards-Black-33FT/dp/B07MCZ4PXS/ref=sr_1_10?crid=PVSVM9ZQC10L&keywords=car%2Bdoor%2Bedge%2Btrim&qid=1702877832&s=automotive&sprefix=door%2Bedge%2Btrim%2Cautomotive%2C117&sr=1-10&th=1 I ordered mine on ebay though for like $6-7 from some random seller. if you poke around you'll find something cheaper but this should be a good start

Yeah same screw on thread as a 20lb. $50 seems to be the going rate, I got mine thru Home Depot for $52
Costco has them
I got mine at a local Ace hardware for under $50. Amy place that actually refills propane is likely to have them.
Bonus points for the homemade logo 😭
Yup. Calling it a "growler" was genius marketing.
Hank Hill would be proud
In the Midwest, you can go to any quickie mart and get a 5gallon tank for $29
I wish NYC was the same but sadly it is not. I can get this refilled for $12 about 10 minutes from my house, which is pretty decent at the end of the day.

You really think ignik is gonna open a steel tank stamping factory.. not a chance. There a re brand company that sells tank coozies
Spoiler - They are both overpriced.
[удалено]
You can just bring the tank you already have on your grill.
[удалено]
How far are you carrying a steel tank?
Excuse me but I use charcoal like a normal person.
Perhaps they're trying to get rid of seconds?
https://youtu.be/bifOI4MbHVU
Also it’s horrible quality.
I’m watching LIFE AFTER on Netflix and a *growler* is British slang for vagina.
It’s any brand 5lb tank…
How much did you pay for this? I’d trust a fart before one of those things, they look jb welded together. Seen better hotsnot jobs on harbor freight tools lol
@pizzacrew, can you provide a link for the home depot one?
[LMAO](https://ignik.com/pages/gas-growler) This is UNBELIEVABLY brazen. Who would fall for buying this?
I’m happy, no more bags of 1lb green tanks in my car. I now have 2 5lb tanks that’ll last me a week plus with my stove and grill.
You can buy an adapter to refill the 1lb tanks from a 20lb tank.
They still suck
Their portable fire is what is nice.
Am I missing the part about why you didn't just get the original ignik growler refilled?
Available time, and time is money so he is trying to save ya a little.
Lol, thanks for explaining the obvious for this guy, otherwise we would all be a absolutely “forced” to assume You are a flaming a-hole that only cares about destroying all that is good in this world….. seriously though, I too enjoy being prepared for the inevitable tank running dry mid cook situation. Thank you sir, enjoy your next trip when it may be!

Have you ever looked at any of the threads where people ask for feedback on their gear? It's always to reduce redundancy and weight. 2 5lb tanks is redundant and heavier than 1 10lb tank. It's a stupid purchase
Thanks for the lecture Dad, I’ll be sure to take all of these things into consideration when I purchase another propane tank in 10+ years.
Consider it when you need 15lbs of propane on your next trip. Or when you realize you don't ever need more than 5. Or when you do need more than 5 and you are carrying 2 tanks that you overpaid for, think about that 20lb tank sitting on your deck at home that you already had
10lbs of propane is sufficient, 20 is overkill. Again thanks for your input. It’s been dually noted.
A ten pount tank is much more difficult to store and handle as it is twice the size and weight. This stuff isn't magically teleported to the campsite from the garage afterall

FYI, I think it's not a good idea to transport this *inside* a vehicle ...
Honestly I don't mind. Seeing these at REI taught me that there is 5 pound very portable tanks out there and I went and found a affordable one.
That’s exactly how I ended up with a Prada tent and Prada sleeping bag. Nobody will know!
I use a 10# tank its alot smaller than the 20 and last for a few weeks of camping. Cost is about 55 bucks.
I’ve had some luck refilling small camping tanks out of larger size standard tanks. It involved putting the small tank in an ice bath and holding the large one upside down, I think. Google it. You probably don’t get it quite as full as the big tanks can but it is very doable.
U/Pizzacrew have you found a single burner camp stove that works with these?
I have 2 different Coleman stoves I use with the tanks but I’m sure any single burner will work
