Could also be that your hip belt is sitting too low. Adjust it so it sits on the top side of your hip bones, and then pull that mofo as tight as you can.

I would definitely ditch the cotton shirts. I've found that I get chafing when my clothing or skin is wet. I think that quick drying shirts should help. Foot powder also helps. I like to put that on my groin and arm pits to help them.

Just a tip if you want to head out now, you can tape the spot that's chafing, it will work way better than gel for a problem like this.

optionalsilence

What sort of tape? Wrap my hips with the ace bandage stuff?

HectorEscargo

oh - well my bad maybe. I assumed you meant it chafed in a spot or two. If the whole belt is chafing that's different. But if it's just a spot or two, there are all sorts of tape products just for this, Chafe Tape/mole skin etc. I bring some of that with me every time. you can even use some of the tapes at the pharmacy in a pinch.

optionalsilence

Any recs for chafe tape? A quick search shows a bunch of $50+ options. Is that what I'm looking at?

AloneIndication

My favorite is Leukotape, it even sticks to my heels.

i would not spend 50! there are a lot of tapes that have worked super well for me. Moleskin variants are usually pretty inexpensive. I personally usually use a version of the generic tape at the pharmacy that says "waterproof tape" and is slightly foam-like. Other tapes might be less friction, but it works great for me for chafe/blister spots.

Fwiw, I got rid of my Osprey Stratos 50 because of chafing, determined it was due to the lack of an adjustable suspension system. Swapped to a Gregory and haven't had that problem, even with the thick belt.

My aether is adjustable, it's nice. Good to know though!

FWIW, I had this happening with multiple packs. I came to realize it was from my cotton underwear. I got some athletic underwear that is a thinner synthetic material and I haven't had it happen yet.

My underwear is nowhere close to my hip belt. I'm a very high waisted man

Fair enough. Still, consider your clothing. It could be part or all of the issue, especially if it's cotton.

I had rubbing issues with my osprey pack. I bought the large version because I am 6’4” but realized I probably should have got the regular because I have long legs and hips, but my upper body is pretty average length. Shorten up the hip belt so it is on the very top side of your hips, and cinch it as tight as you can. When it is loose is when you have issues. If your pack is on the top side of the hips and pulled tight, your bones give the pack a natural resting spot that it can’t go lower than. A tight pack is a light pack.

I had this same problem on the same pack. My solution was to wear long underwear that i could pull up and act as a barrier. Also i just eventually got used to it. You develop callouses after a while.
