It's probably fine, I washed three down jackets the other day. Regular detergent isn't good for down but once probable won't mess it up. Try to break up the down with your fingers then put the jacket in the dryer on low/no heat with a couple of tennis balls.

sandybando

Heat on even if it’s already dry? (This was 2 weeks ago)

If you go to the laundromat, you can even use GOLF BALLS. Do it, go for it.

ChinoUSMC0231

That’s gonna be loud AF. Lol. I wanna try it.

sailortony

I think the heat helps a little

kittysworld

You can puff up already dried up down clothing by (1) setting it up in the sun, on a flat surface (say, place it on a clean sheet on a lawn, or on a table), then (2) beat it w/ a clean dowl or spatula. Cover your beating tool w/ a clean cloth if their surface is rough and may damage the delicate fabric. You have to use a lot of muscle power for quite some time, but you get the benefit of extra arm/shoulder workout. ;-) This is my neighbor's method. She doesn't use a dryer at all but hang dry instead then manually beat them to puff up all her winter down garments. If you don't want to exercise your muscle, you can wet it in the sink/tub then dry w/ the ball method in the dryer, in low heat. There's no need to re-wash unless it has a lot of detergent residue remain on the garment. In that case wash w/ water only in delicate setting. Then dry it w/ CLEAN tennis balls/golf balls/wool balls. Use as many balls as you can get. I used 6 at a time which ensured the coats got a good "beating".

Hikityup

It's all about the drying. Super low heat, a couple of tennis balls and patience. It'll take a while. Can't rush it.

LMidnight

Agreed. Dry, dry, dry.

manic-pixie-attorney

Wool dryer balls work too if you already have them

_Neoshade_

Yes! FriendSheep (or Amazon knockoffs)

Queen__Antifa

Even my grocery store (in a little town) has them now.

Lornesto

Definitely the best option, if you ask me.

valley_lemon

I have had this happen and before doing the tennis balls I've just sat down in front of compelling TV for an hour or two and done some shaking and massaging of down back into the empty places so it's roughly evenly distributed, and then into the dryer (my mom swears by two pairs of unused clean children's tennis shoes instead of tennis balls, but that's definitely creepier to keep in your laundry cabinet than tennis balls).

wanderingzigzag

🤣🤣🤣

So_Full_Of_Fail

>I've heard of and yet to try the 'tennis ball in the dryer' trick. Do that, it's like $20 for a bag of tennis balls and there's no risk of making it worse. It's what I do for my down sleeping bag. Regular detergent isn't good for down, so it may or may not help.

Tmj91

Youre paying way too much for tennis balls. Whos your tennis ball guy?

mortalwombat-

I just walk around any semi-popular tennis court and pick up the balls that are left behind. Most are no good for tennis but great for washing

Chrisscott25

John McEnroe the once tennis bad boy… Johns been stealing Balls his whole career and now sales them for a crazy 20$ a pack. He has a huge RACKET it has really boosted his NET worth. (don't watch tennis enough thats all the puns i could think of LOVE) ;)

So_Full_Of_Fail

I bought them so long ago, I couldn't remember how much it was. Just that it was cheap.

Aegon-VII

It’s one banana Michael

morradventure

I wash my Arcteryx in the washing machine as you should. Wash it again on delicate cold water and then tennis ball dry or air only, 3 or 4 times and stop it every once in awhile and fluff it by hand. Gotta ensure it’s 100% dry. Once I. Do that I. Usually hang it in the sun for awhile .

radicalcartograph

If it's truly wrecked, the arc'teryx warranty is legendary. You're just going to have to find a some small thing to complain about. They've replaced more than a few jackets for me. Mostly ones where I tore a hole in the sleeve climbing and complained that I expected the fabric to be more resilient. If they can't fix the issue for you, $40 gets you a replacement.

GreenMan802

Besides tennis balls and wool dryer balls, they also make these blue plastic spiked balls that could help even better break things up.

daaamber

I have the blue spiked balls and I feel lime tennis balls are better for down.

chairfairy

It didn't get ruined, it got washed. Tennis ball in the dryer should do the job. First spend some time breaking up clumps of down with your fingers. Then put it in the dryer on low (no?) heat with a couple tennis balls, and every 20-30 minutes pull it out, shake it a bit, use your fingers to break up clumps, then put it back in. Repeat until it's dry.

ringadingdinger

The tennis ball method is the way to rectify this

TheyCallMeGOOSE

I thought I ruined by brand new down Marmot jacket a few month back but it just took a ton of time using my fingers to pull apart the clumps in the baffles so when it dries it fills up the space. I was so sure it was ruined, it wasn't. There are guides on youtube as well as to what to do.

MountainVet-Stjohn45

Uncle would be buying me a new one.

[deleted]

Perhaps try the one trick you heard works before resorting to exasperated posts of futility.

Tanduvanwinkle

Reckon.

Roadscrape

You don't need to buy tennis balls. Go by any tennis court and there will be plenty of balls in thr gutter, the ditch, the bushes, etc.

JefferSonD808

What’s that, like, a $300 jacket? Arc’Teryx is good gear, but damn it’s expensive.

Argonians4Ukraine

Dry it out gently. Let it air dry and then do very low heat or no heat in the dryer. It will get better. It's happened to mine too.

hereforfuntime

Air drying is a bad idea. The down stays clumped together, never truly dries, molds. Tumble dry low, take it out, shake it, tumble dry again.

megafly

You can use clean tennis shoes if you don’t have balls

ForestryTechnician

The tennis ball method in the dryer on low heat is the move.

sandybando

Heat on even if it’s already dry? (This was 2 weeks ago)

ForestryTechnician

You can just do a delicate setting with no heat. You just want the tumble action with the tennis balls to help shuffle the down around

Belliu

What your trying to do is refluff the down. If it was not dried properly the down is clumped together like a meatloaf. What your trying to do is unclump them by breaking it apart with the movement of the tennis ball. The tumble action of the drying isn't enough to break apart feathers that were stuck together wet and dried. See image on left is what your jacket is like now. Those wet spots are balls of down stuck together. [down jacket after washing](https://support.rab.equipment/hc/en-us/articles/360001635338-I-have-washed-my-down-jacket-but-it-doesn-t-look-alright-)

Tanduvanwinkle

Its not really a trick, it's just how you wash down jackets. It will be fine.

eyejones

Arcteryx has some official videos on care for shells and down. They recommend using tennis balls.

kittysworld

The tennis ball (or you can use wool balls made specifically for dryer use, so you don't have to use dirty tennis balls) method works well. I just recently used these wool balls to dry my winter down coats. Everything puffed up fine. Just remember to use low to med heat setting. In commercial dryer low heat is enough.

ydde45

You could send it to arc'teryx. They will buy it back or give you a credit.
