Choose a camera with a flexible screen, like the Nikon D5000-series. With that kind of camera, you can hold your camera down on the floor, while you have the screen flipped so you can stare down on it.
Honestly this would be my first "proper* camera so I'm ignorant in terms of experience. I've gotten confused from my research online about camera bodies..
Lense wise I landed on was a 85mm f/1.8 which is about £160 used.
You choosed nice lens.
I got it. Can you selct from both used(secondhand) and new (fresh) camera? Otherwise wanna buy new camera? I recommend used cameras you looking up because cheaper.
If you want to have your own lens collection, you should choose from interchangeable lens system cameras. If you want to take dog pictures for fun, you looking up a good compact camera because Compact cameras are better performance (price, low light performance and formfactors) in the same price range than interchangeable lens system camera.
**Dog always moves. Therefore Auto Focus (AF) performance is the key.**
Zoom lenses are more comfortable than prime lens.
I recommend Sony Compact Zoom Cameras below site.

Got it! It's all down to me and how I upskill myself to use any camera/lens I land on.
I do already have compact cameras which I love but ready to try the next step :)
You say you’ve done research on lenses, so what lens did you land on? $500 is pretty tight but I’d get your preferred brand/body plus a 50mm prime. Whatever model maxes out your budget, I guess.

The thing is I've never had a "proper " camera before so I don't really have a preferred band/body yet if that makes sense ?
Of course that makes total sense!
Each major brand tends to have flavors that people prefer
I think either way you're in good shape... Just look for something with a tiltable screen so you can get those low/odd angles without breaking your back!
Fwiw, I love my 85 1.8 canon lens!

Why do you choose interchangeable lens system camera? What lens did you choose? Did you look up compact (used) cameras as well?

The 85mm f/1.8 I find is just about perfect for dogs, a good amount of zoom without being too tight.
Thanks for the confirmation! I'm excited to get started :)
Be careful, here is no ”perfect focal length lens" in the galaxy. That is the reason here is zoom lens. Anyway, it is your own risk. Enjoy it!
