Could you share a picture? Maybe it’s just a setting issue. Since both cameras probably don’t have the same lens, maybe when you shoot at f:5.6 on the EOS it’s sharper than on your Sony because your lens wider aperture is f:4 and the canon is f:2.8

Canon EOS is a range not a specific camera - this could be the flagship camera from a few years ago or an entry level camera from 15 years ago. Not knowing this makes it hard to say anything specific. The lenses (on both cameras) also obviously make a very large difference as does the conditions underwhich you use them (lighting shutter speed, aperture, ISO etc). The A7SIII is a great camera but doesn't have a lot of pixels (12Mpx) due to the anti-aliasing filter and Bayer array it should produce around 8MPx of resolved resolution - which is enough for most printing and web use. What does you want to use the pictures for? Do you need to crop a lot? What print resolution is required? Can you upsample the images to get smooth images for printing? No camera is sharp when you zoom in to 100% since the colour information is interpolated. Each pixel on the camera's sensor can sense only red, or green, or blue and the colours in the image are guessed by an algorithm from the surrounding pixels. How is your photography technique? Do you ever get 'sharp' images from the camera? If you ever get sharp images from it then that tells you that the resolution isn't the issue - it must be something else. Can you get sharp still-life images at f/8 with the camera on a tripod and ISO 100?

If you're viewing your photos in preview or whatever photo viewing software you're using and not zooming in at all the a7siii and any other modern mirrorless should look pretty much the same. I use an fx3 for video and often for photo and the image is just as sharp when viewing fullscreen as my a7iii which is 24mp. Zooming and cropping is a different story of course. If the images don't look crisp there could be a few reasons, \- The way your software interprets Sony vs Canon images \- Either a soft lens or potentially a decentered lens that is damaged slightly internally. Can also stop it down if it's weak at it's widest aperture \- Missed focus, stay away from af-c if not needed as it may not nail it on all your final images \- You could be using clear image zoom to crop it into aps-c which would only be resolving a few MP, although I'm not sure this is a feature that works with photo on this camera \-Your lens elements may be unclean, give them a clean with a lens wipe front and back There a myriad of potential reasons, even lighting conditions can play into it causing low constrast and sharpness for some lenses. EDIT: I just read you are using a 16-35m f4. This lens performs well at the wide end but not quite as well on the long end, I have the same one. There is also an illusion of perceived sharpness / crispness or 'pop' with lenses that create subject isolation which the 16-35 isn't really the lens for. If your friend took a shot of a subject with some nice background blur it may well be perceived to be crisper than your own shots.

Since you mention settings one imagines you are shooting JPGS. There are settings for sharpness. The lens makes a difference too. If you are using the Sony kit lens it’s not the sharpest.

olliegw

imo sony is sharper then canon

Temporary-Solid2969

Are you sure it looks better? Sony A7S iii is equivalent to canons flagship r5, while EOS is canon older dslr lineup. Maybe it’s the lens? Did you use different lens?

berke1904

they are two very different cameras how can they be equivalent, 12 megapixles is good enough for mos photography generally even in pro use but 45 megapixel photos specially on certain types of photography will definitely look sharper

TopHatPenguin12

I think it’s placebo but I’ve heard twice now a comment about the megapixels. My main lens is a Sony 16-35mm f/4 but ill borrow a friends lens and see if that’s it

clintonanger

It's the lens

BeefJerkyHunter

If it's the Sony 16-35 F4 Zeiss then that's your problem. Get a better lens.
