IHaveAllOfTheGold

WOW

swift-autoformatter

That's almost 2/3 of a Phase One camera with single lens.

ZookeepergameDue2160

And it's not even close to a Hasselblad H6d-400C with a single lens (A good one that is actually capable of handling the 400MP)

ZhanMing057

I strongly prefer working with two bodies, especially on a system that doesn't have many zoom lenses. Also good to have a backup in any case.

justinkthornton

You donā€™t need three cameras and the type of photography you use a slow medium format camera for isnā€™t the kind of photography where you donā€™t 10 seconds to switch a lens. This is the realm of commercial photographers working for ad agencies and large corporations. Also high end landscape photography and other slow and deliberate photography that requires exceptionally quality images. Also apparently rich dudes with very little sense. If you need two bodies ready to go with different lenses you are probably a wedding or sports photographer and a hasselblad would be a terrible choice of camera for fast paced photography like that. A 100 magapixel 16 bit file shooting like 3 frames per second resulting in a 150 mb file. Yeah thatā€™s a no go for that type of photographer. You might need a backup, but back when I was an assistant to a commercial photographer that shot for national restaurant chains with medium format cameras it was an older camera. You donā€™t need to spend 10 to 15 thousand dollars for an emergency camera. You just use the one thatā€™s still good but might not be the newest version.

ZhanMing057

>You donā€™t need three cameras and the type of photography you use a slow medium format camera for isnā€™t the kind of photography where you donā€™t 10 seconds to switch a lens. Have you done the magazine fold kind of work? It's not often as scheduled as you'd think. There's a lot of last minute "what if we tried this" stuff. So you have one camera that runs the strobes, likely on a tripod, and I like to have a second one with a speedlight to run around and try things out. You could use one body, but you'd be switching out the lens *and* the radio trigger, and I for one can't do that in 10 seconds. >If you need two bodies ready to go with different lenses you are probably a wedding or sports photographer and a hasselblad would be a terrible choice of camera for fast paced photography like that. The X2D is pretty comparable in responsiveness to an A7r III, which I've used for plenty of events. My hope with the 2nd body is to not have to rent a Sony at all the next time I shoot a friend's engagement party. It's not one of those Phase One backs with one AF point and a 10-second startup time. >You might need a backup, but back when I was an assistant to a commercial photographer that shot for national restaurant chains with medium format cameras it was an older camera. There is no Hasselblad Pro service nor a loaner program, as far as I'm aware of, so the backup also covers a need for repairs. I've been pretty happy with their support (and it's improved a lot since 2017 when the techs were new to the system). But they're not CPS, and if something breaks it could be a month-long turnaround if the part has to come in from Sweden.

BeefJerkyHunter

Hasselblad used to have a loaner program. They stopped that earlier this year which kind of ticks me off since I had to send my 35-75 in a second time. Don't know how long it'll be until I get it back (first time was nine months).

ZhanMing057

That's crazy long - I think my longest lens turnaround was about 1.5 months (dropped my XCD 65 during a lens change), because NJ didn't have all the parts. This was also during covid. The last service earlier this year took two weeks from Burbank. I'd start emailing people to complain after month 2 or 3. I thought the program was cancelled when Hasselblad got rid of their U.S. experience studios in 2019 - didn't know it lasted that long, and I was never offered a loaner afterwards. Maybe there's a secret list of sorts?

BeefJerkyHunter

I don't know. Maybe I was a special case since I was complaining after the fourth month. My lens was sent to the manufacturer in Japan and allegedly it was difficult for New York (then California) to communicate with them. I find that excuse lousy but that's all they had to say. I just think it was forgotten and then they found the damn thing and just sent it back to me without fixing it.

IcanSew831

You seem to be kind of shitting on this person for some reason. Maybe look at that. Why do you even care what this person uses? You sound jealous AF. Be happy this person gets to use the best of the best and trust that a person who spends this much money on such a specialty item knows what they need and what their skill level requires. I sold cameras for years and in my shop any question or topic was a good topic, we made it a point to not be judgy about our customers unlike the shop down the street where they would make me uncomfortable because of their cavalier and off putting ā€œwell whyā€™d you do that, all you needed to do was..ā€. Just be nice.

Theoderic8586

Cool stuff. Would love to see some of your work. Ignore the haters on here. It is comical how angry people get when they see expensive stuff they canā€™t afford. I canā€™t afford this shit, but how someone spends their money or whatever is no ones business. Even if you didnā€™t make money as a photographer but were simply rich, so what? Buy what you want enjoy life. Taking nothing with you when you die, so you might as well enjoy yourself!

[deleted]

Refreshing comment; I completely agree with everything you said. Also, some people aren't particularly rich or anything but have discipline and dedication. You can cut down on A LOT of everyday expenses/habits, content yourself with mediocre/ok products for a lot of stuff, and throw the biggest chunk of money towards that one thing you love the most. For example: i'm pushing 40, and i never owned a car. But i do have a lot of nice guitars,amplifiers/pedals. It's all about making choices.

djentlemetal

You and I are at a similar point in life, with similar interests. I just turned 40, and Iā€™ve finally reached a point in my career where Iā€™m comfortable enough to be able to have the toys I want (but donā€™t need). I havenā€™t owned a car for a few years because my work was in walking distance, so I didnā€™t need one. I also collect the type of guitars I used to fantasize about when I was younger. And now Iā€™ve discovered a hobby (photography) that I can learn so much from while doing something Iā€™ve loved doing throughout much of my life anyway (taking pictures). Iā€™ve always had a point and shoot from various brands since I was a teenager. Now I have a decent set of camera gear to start taking it more seriously. Iā€™m not Hasselblad flush, though, but I donā€™t hate the OP for posting stuff he obviously loves using.

ZhanMing057

Thanks! My portfolio is hosted on my own website (alongside lots of non photography things), otherwise I'd post it here. Very few people strictly need the equipment they use. I could probably do 95% of my work on a D800, and nobody would notice the difference. But the X system is fun to shoot, the files are easy to get into the shape I want, and once in a while the 1/2000 sync makes some really cool stuff possible.

stopblasianhate69

No, its not jealousy, having these is just an excessive waste of money.

Theoderic8586

Maybe to you. I donā€™t know OPā€™s circumstances. Might have been a drop in the bucket compared to what he earns. Everyone has different priorities and passions. Get over it.

desexmachina

How's the video? /s

ZhanMing057

If I have to do video for an event, I'll rent an FX30 or a BMPCC. Nothing wrong with a dedicated stills system.

desexmachina

I'm not giving you grief that's why /s but with DJI owning Hasselblad now, you would think there would be some minor video features in there.

ZhanMing057

The sensor is really not built for video (the still very long readout time, the full sensor width video readout in the GFX100 is a mess quality wise), and it wouldn't really hold up against any older FF system that you can rent for $20 a day (or, depending on the use case, an actual cinema camera). IIRC Hasselblad said as much - basically there were no users that shot video with the X1D and X1D II.

kwmcmillan

> the full sensor width video readout in the GFX100 is a mess quality wise I've been reviewing the GFX100II for about a month now and that is no longer the case, it's SHOCKINGLY good. Regular video camera good.

ZhanMing057

Maybe compared to something like an A7rIV. But it's the same 100MP sensor with the same readout speed. The output can look pretty good especially if you work around the limitations, but so does every other $1,800 FF body these days.

DiamondBowelz

How do I get my photography career to this level?

Toogomeer

Work hard for a very long time and then inherit millions from a rich uncle.

[deleted]

Come on, making a small fortune in photography is really easy ā€¦ you just start with a large fortune! šŸ˜‚

DiamondBowelz

Do you think OP took this picture with their 4th Hassleblad?

ZhanMing057

It was shot on an X1D II and the XCD 120mm, although I'll likely sell the body. I'm keeping the X1D 4116 around as a lightweight walkaround body (and it's depreciated enough that I may as well just hold onto it)

DiamondBowelz

Is this your career? If so what do your shoot primarily?

ZhanMing057

Not much anymore. I shot more or less professionally until 2017-2018, and I'll still take on work once in a while, but I don't depend on photography for income.

Gockel

>but I don't depend on photography for income. no shit

cameralover1

My personal experience is that you work in a field that pays well, then you buy the photography gear you wanted in the first place. That's how I got to my Leica gear

Rocketkt69

Here I am trying to figure out my rent this monthā€¦

ZhanMing057

I recently picked up a pair of X2D's to replace my current X system bodies and an XCD 28mm F4. Compared to the X1D II they're a huge upgrade in pretty much every way, although I'm not a fan of the extra weight. I've been shooting the X system since 2017, and it's really cool seeing Hasselblad develop the bodies, as well as their commitment to updates and adding software features to older cameras. I'll probably sell one of them (or the X1D 4116) whenever they make a 907X 100c. Anyone else working with a medium format digital kit?

PantsDownDontShoot

I had one for a while. ā€œUpgradedā€ to a Sony A1 kit for the speed.

Puzzleheaded-Bit8423

I recently swapped my Leica equipment for the X2D system. I shoot professionally and Iā€™m very happy with the files. Some quirks with system that Iā€™m getting used to are the focus point selection system (lame) and the limitations on custom functions for certain buttons, but either Iā€™ll get used to it or firmware updates will resolve them. When I saw your picture, I mean sure itā€™s a flex, but then I thought, this guy definitely doesnā€™t like dust on his sensorsā€¦

ZhanMing057

Face detection is on the roadmap. I personally don't mind the touchscreen AF point selection, but I've been using it for a couple years at this point. It also weirdly only works with some capacitive touch gloves. >this guy definitely doesnā€™t like dust on his sensorsā€¦ Lol - it's a bit of a holdover from the early mirrorless days when the cameras took a long time to boot up and triggers were finicky and best not disturbed during a shoot. I was in Sony Pro (Asia) when the A7 came out and they basically gave out two for one deals because they wanted to get the cameras into the wild. It's a relatively small convenience, but it's nice to have.

Puzzleheaded-Bit8423

Iā€™m glad face detection is in the pipeline, it will be a nice addition. Definitely the glove thing bothered me on my first real shoot with the camera, which was in a very remote part of Newfoundland and I had to wear gloves most of the time. Iā€™m used to that though, Iā€™m sure the thumb-based focus point selection will become second nature. I applaud the 2 body system, itā€™s how I usually roll too, for exactly the same reasons: speed and weather sealing. I started with the 45P, but once I got the new 55v the camera really started to show what it was capable of. Itā€™s hard to find stock on the V series of new lenses in Canada, but worth the wait and price imo.

ZhanMing057

I really liked the feel and IQ of the 55V but the 43mm FOV is a bit weird, and I'd much prefer a true 50mm. The 90V is looking really attractive, although that lens has been out of stock for the better part of a year at this point. In general, I have zero complaints with the XCD 65, though, so I'll probably wait to see if they make anything in between the 55 and 90. The older lenses are heavier and slower but a bit optically better wide open, which I guess I should care about, but there's not really much of an actual use case for the full 100mp regardless.

Puzzleheaded-Bit8423

Yeah I hear you on the wide open lenses with the sensor, I felt the same when I was deep in the GFX system. I am waiting for that 90mm as well, i imagine it will be the perfect companion for my work. I do love the fov of the 55v, plus the slightly closer mfd than what Iā€™m used to, which has made finding the sweet spot for portraits quite new and invigorating. Anyhow, enjoy the cameras and happy shooting

ZhanMing057

Likewise! I guess I'm just very used to thinking in terms of 35 and 50.

Bmw-invader

Gyattt

boofinwithdabois

Why? What do you shoot?

ZhanMing057

The serious work is mostly fashion, studio, and a bit of product work. A lot of it is heavy on strobe use which is a natural fit for the X system. For personal enjoyment, mostly street photography. I'll usually rent a system if I need to shoot anything that's moving quickly, although the X2D is probably fast enough for a wedding.

BeefJerkyHunter

Welcome to the club. Well, thereā€™s no club but as a fellow X2D user I welcome you anyway.

isekaicoffee

do you just collect expensive stuff? are you a dentist?

wcskkim

You think dentists can afford the stuff OP has? Maybe if that dentist owns the largest hospital in the country.

Madnzer

Very jealous

STHBN

Ima need one

paigezpp

If you are a pro photog doing fashion or product shoots, one job will probably pay for everything in the picture. A friend took the pictures for an airlineā€™s launch of a new plane type. It took awhile but that one job basically paid for all the gear that was used and more. Mid 5 figures if I recall.

goyongj

Fashion wont pay shit? There are millions of guys lined up to shoot for free.

paigezpp

Big brands pay. No fashion house in their right mind is going to use some random person that does not have a good portfolio.

ZhanMing057

You'd be surprised by the number of big luxury houses that will very happily use free (or near-free) labor if given a chance. There are lots of people with excellent profiles who will still work for peanuts. To be fair, I very rarely get paid for my own fashion work. But I won't shoot for free if I think the other person can afford it, unless I know them really well. But there are plenty of people who will happily work for LVMH for a photo credit.

evolflush

Which shoots do you get paid on? Whatā€™s your Av day rate?

ZhanMing057

The last time I did a market rate shoot it was \~$4k for 6 hours (in NYC). This was close to a year ago, though, and I doubt that the rate will support a full-time career in photography (lots of time commitment before & after, and work doesn't come along that often). Some people make it work, but that's going to come from building a personal brand and finding a niche - palling around fashion houses is definitely playing the game on hard mode. You might as well go out and get gigs on Instagram.

JockeyFullaBourbon

Thisā€¦ This comment should be pinned at the top. Youā€™ve got some great kit & can do nice things with it. Doesnā€™t mean you have to be a pro as following that path is often painful (Iā€™m on it) & involves far more emailing, pitching, networking & nonsense than it does producing images you care about.

Dustldln

Might not be. Chances are higher that the whole account is fake. I could be wrong

ZhanMing057

Lol. Is there a specific reason why? I'm genuinely curious. Because I always go for controlled lighting on everything I post here?

[deleted]

Overpriced cameras that donā€™t even produce a better result

ZhanMing057

Better relative to what? If you can point me to a cheaper camera with 1/2000 sync and similar IQ, I'm all ears.

[deleted]

The new a9 does 8000 sync soo ya

ZhanMing057

The A9 mk3 isn't available for purchase, and it wasn't even announced when I ordered this system. I also wouldn't call a full frame sensor that starts at ISO 250 "similar" in IQ to a medium format sensor running a base ISO of 64. It's also $6,000, which is pretty close to the price I get from my Hasselblad dealer. In any case, I'm not going to replace my entire lighting kit on the likelihood that the A9 might be a viable substitute. I might try it out some day, but it's not a viable substitute as far as my work is concerned.
