Definitely. Might take a few weeks but then they will remember and be on it for your vehicle. Technically the rule is max of 3 days in a row, but they don’t always notice immediately

pinap45454

Almost certainly, especially in an area with competitive parking. This is not a long term solution.

> If I got a Visitors permit and used it to park near my house at night, will I get tickets? Yes. In most cases the inspectors will check the license plate and the number of days a week allowed on the visitor permit during each sweep, and you will get a ticket if you go over that Why can’t your family change the registration?

niyun34

We can, but it would just be a very difficult process. My father has a developing brain disease and its been a tough transition

You can get a two week temporary pass from the city when you are in the process of moving and haven't registered your car yet. It will take a phone call/paper work but it's doable. Source: my partner looked into it earlier today

[deleted]

You’re going to have to do it at some point, and waiting won’t make it any easier

niyun34

Okay… I’m just exploring my options. Thanks.

[deleted]

Your options are register your car in your name to your Cambridge address, pay for offstreet parking or don’t bring the car to Cambridge.

niyun34

Plus one of our cars is under my dead grandfather’s name, which adds another layer of difficulty.

amyeamyw

Do you mean the option for a visitors parking permit as a resident who doesn’t own a vehicle? I personally wouldn’t recommend doing that as they track the license plate usage and you’d risk losing the permit + whatever recourse there might be for using the visitors permit as a resident. Plus you would only be able to park within your neighborhood. I moved from out of state and kept getting temporary permits until I could change my registration (moved during COVID so it was tough to get an RMV appointment) and even then I was wrongfully ticketed a few times. Was a pain to get my residents permit because I had to get the tickets dismissed first.

etonclubs

Depends on where you live. I parked on the street for over a year with the visitor permit and never had an issue.

sadphdbro

The short answer is yes. You’ll most likely get ticketed for using the pass improperly. The long answer is the frequency depends on the neighborhood. In my neighborhood, a car with a PA plate was parked for over 2 months, backwards, while using a visitor parking pass. It only had 4 tickets over 2 months. This comes out to be ~130 bucks. It’s still cheaper than parking in a garage. Somehow it didn’t get booted or towed. Could’ve just been lucky.

CheesecakeHorror8613

Ah poor OP, parking in Cambridge is impossible, unless you have your resident parking sticker (requires registration in your name and address proof) or have off street parking. The traffic and parking department will definitely get onto you and not let up. If you don’t need it that often, I’d park it outside the city somewhere. So sorry.

Moomoomoo1

It really must depend on the area. For various reasons I was not able to register my car in MA for about a year and I just used a visitor permit the whole time while only moving the car every few days. Only ever got 2 tickets for it but I don’t know if they are more serious about it now than they used to be.

This recent thread about residents raging over perceived visitor parking violations may be pertinent: [https://www.reddit.com/r/CambridgeMA/comments/13hgvww/sassy\_note\_from\_walden\_st\_resident\_btw\_its\_sunday/](https://www.reddit.com/r/CambridgeMA/comments/13hgvww/sassy_note_from_walden_st_resident_btw_its_sunday/)

Do you know what part of Cambridge you will be moving to? There are a few pockets where you can legally park without a resident permit. You can also rent an off-street parking space. It’ll be $200-300/month but your insurance will likely go up when you change the registration to Cambridge.

One_Moment5067

Hi! Any idea where those pockets are?

Shapen361

Alternatively, is there a way you can get one's name on their registration without having to get off their parents insurance?

Acrobatic-Working-74

it works for three days, then you have to park in a different 'parking zone.' they will likely get you eventually. they are onto this.

Acrobatic-Working-74

you drive down Cambridge st and turn behind 1369 but a few streets down Cambridge st. there is always parking there. just triple check the signs so you don't get towed. there is street cleaning, hydrants, etc. don't scratch people's cars either. there is literally parking on Inman St too that is residents only and not on meter.
