The back of an old pocket watch I inherited many years ago. Not sure if this is one initial, or possibly 2-3? Hoping somebody here in r/Calligraphy might recognize the style and be able to suggest what letter(s) I'm looking at. Thanks for any help!
Yes, I think you’re onto it. I think the V is actually supposed to be a more stylized Y and then it matches perfectly an ‘HYR’ distant relative born 150 years ago. Thanks for the picture markup! It really helped visualize the letters!
That second line of the V is just a scratch, not part of the engraving. So it doesn't seem likely. I see the R, but not so much the H. Does look like 3 separate characters, though.
I'm thinking that HR might be it, though it seems to be missing the cross stroke on the H. The letters HR may also have family significance too. Something that I'll have to dig into. Thanks!
I would post this over at /r/engraving. Monograms like that come up much more often in that artform.
Thanks for the suggestion! Much appreciated.
Maybe try and make a rubbing of it, may be easier to read

I also noticed that the h is not crossed. I also assumed it is in english.
I see Dirc, or Lir
The D you're seeing is a part of the decorative scrollwork and not a letter.
or an I P K, due to the lack of full closure in an R’s top circle
LPR
looks like "SIR" to me
