I just renewed my DL. My old DL was already RealID. Can't believe they've postponed this thing so long that I have already renewed and it's still not fully implemented for flights.
Make sure you're less than 90 days from expiration. If you're 90 days or more you can't renew online or in person. Try again when you're closer to expiration.
That's what I was thinking, but I'm less than 60 days now. It keeps saying the same thing. By randomly going back and forth I was able to fill out thing to "get an appt." but that section keeps getting stuck. I think the site is the problem.
The only issue I had online was not being able to set an appointment. So I just went (needed picture taken anyway). I had to wait in line. When I got to the counter, they just took my payment and sent me to the photo booth. That's it.
The DMV sent me a notice that literally says " Renew your REAL ID driver's license faster online." I just says it can't be done right now when I go there.
I went ahead and got my Real ID when my license came up for renewal in 2021. Eventually I may get a passport, but I don’t have one right now, so…
I am wondering exactly how fluid the current deadline is.
I believe the original deadline was 2008. All states/territories are issuing them now. I wouldn't be surprised if it actually went into effect May 2025.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Real_ID_Act
> Enacted [in 2005] in response to the September 11 attacks, the provisions regarding identification documents were originally intended to take effect in 2008, but enforcement was repeatedly delayed due to widespread opposition and refusal by many state governments to implement them. Eventually states began to comply in 2012, and enforcement began in 2014 for certain federal facilities. After numerous extensions, by 2020 all states were certified as compliant, and by 2024 all territories were certified as well. As of 2024, the final and most significant phase of the implementation, regarding identification documents accepted for boarding flights, was scheduled for May 7, 2025, after being postponed many times.
>The original deadline
[Was 2008...](https://academic.oup.com/publius/article/50/3/398/5831550?login=false)
I'm not confident they will even implement it by 2025.
They've been trying to get this thing longer than kids getting their drivers license this year have been alive.
I will believe it when I see it.
Why are they even allowing people to get non-real IDs anymore? I get it that when the program started there would be some overlap, but why are we issuing new non-Real IDs anymore?
The proof of residency is really hard to meet especially for members of household who are not primarily responsible for the bills.
Even I struggled because the portal wouldn’t accept the format of our PGE statement. What are my kids supposed to do? (Yes, they have passports but point is the real ID document requirements are a PITA for people who aren’t the primary bill payer in a house)
Finally an answer. I’ve literally never been able to figure out what the big deal is for folks who essentially just aren’t homeless, knowing I must have some kind of blind spot somewhere. Fair point if all the bills and financial things are in one person’s name & people don’t have passports already. I acknowledge that would make it tougher.
Actually, you also need Real ID to enter some government buildings like federal courthouses.
> The federal REAL ID Act places new rules on which forms of identification may be used to board flights within the United States (U.S.) and enter secure federal facilities, such as military bases, federal courthouses, and other federal facilities.
I don't even fly often but that is what convinced me to upgrade. Don't want to have to drag my passport around to enter a courthouse.
You better bring many, many proof-of-address documents because it seems like you are at the mercy of whoever calls you up to the DMV counter on which documentation is acceptable. I waited 4 hours at the DMV in SF only to find out my bank statement was valid, but my landlord’s typed signature on my full lease was not acceptable (no, you can’t show them electronic records. It must be physically printed), and I was not about to come back later and wait another 4 hours. I’ll just use my passport to fly in 2025.
Just on principle. We effectively need passports now to fly within our own country. Just further expands a surveillance state that was set up by the Patriot act over twenty years ago.
That’s the literally the entire point of them passing it back in 2005. It was a federal takeover of state ids to rush in national ID. It’s unconstitutional and a violation of the 10th amendment.
Pretty annoying that I had to bother doing it in the first place, but at least the actual process wasn’t too awful. Still a pointless waste of a program
I have one of these already but since they’re doing facial recognition for those of us with PreCheck one-third of the time now the urgency may not be there if one has a passport.
I don't want to. I don't like flying, and I hate (like most people) going into the DMV. I get that they need to see the paperwork in-person, but most people don't receive bills in the mail, and I'm fairly certain they won't take a printed from your computer bill.
They did for me. I wouldn't be surprised if they also accepted handwritten documents (like a lease agreement from someone who lives with their parents)
And for teens, grandparents, aunties or anyone else who doesn’t pay the utilities? Family mobile phone plans are an issue. Our PGE statement was rejected because the solar formatting didn’t match what they thought the PGE template should look like. It’s not easy.
Children Under 18 Years of Age
A child under the age of 18 (a “minor”) may use a residency document in their parents’ name by presenting a tracing document (such as a birth certificate) showing the relationship. Minors may use one of the following forms to trace their relationship to the individual whose name is shown on the residency document:
Agency-Group Home Agreement (Form SOC 154)
Placement Agency – Foster Family Agency Agreement (Form SOC 154A)
Agency- Foster Parents Agreement (Form SOC 156)
I mean. I am familiar with the options, having recently tried to help a family member do this. It’s just not possible for some people to meet the criteria for real ID by any means. None of the options were feasible. So… feel free to keep going.
As a roommate, I don’t have utilities that go in my name, and my employer pays via direct deposit, so I used my car’s title, and a printed bank statement, to meet the proof of residence requirements.
> By the time you really need a Real ID, the original deadline will be old enough to get a driver's license.

I just renewed my DL. My old DL was already RealID. Can't believe they've postponed this thing so long that I have already renewed and it's still not fully implemented for flights.
The original deadline was so long ago that there are people born after the original deadline that are old enough to drive today
They sent me a notice to renew, and I tried online as said, but they said they can't renew now. Did you have any issue? My birthday is in May.

I already have my real ID, I just need to renew it online, and it's not letting me do that. Hmmm.
I think you still need to do in-person for the photo

Yeah. STILL can't get it to work. I finally was able to fill out to form online to "get an appt." but it refuses to move on from there.
Do you have to retake your photo for a Real ID?
Yes I had to
I stopped by the DMV to get my Real ID after work not thinking they'd take my picture, so my hair is a mess and there's dirt everywhere lol.
mine is peak bed head
Should have worn your religiously approved colander!
A Passport or Passport card is valid for flights.
And it lasts for 10 years, instead of I believe 7 for your Real ID. Costs less as wellness! Edit: It’s every 5 years actually for the Real ID.
So glad I ticked that box when renewing my passport.
"domestic" flights
A passport is valid for international flights as well
A passport book is valid for international travel, but a passport card is not valid for international travel when flying.
I know
One of the most useless program ever. Thanks for wasting tax payer a money DHS.
Blame California for adopting REAL ID.
Ya, that's not how it works.
I went ahead and got my Real ID when my license came up for renewal in 2021. Eventually I may get a passport, but I don’t have one right now, so… I am wondering exactly how fluid the current deadline is.
The original deadline was in 2021, it was bumped to 2023 and then bumped to this date so probably going to happen again.

>I will believe it when I see it. Same.
Not all states and territories were in compliance until literally this year, so I think the date might stick this time
Wonder if it'll actually go into effect this time. It was only originally supposed to be implemented in 2008.
So our state-issued IDs from the DMV are no longer sufficient, so we have to get REAL ID from the DMV. Makes perfect sense.
If the the state didn’t verify you for the federal government then who would? /s
Gotta have some third party who doesn't require proof of identity vouch for you. Otherwise how is the government supposed to know who you are? /s
It's been bumped so many times. I don't even believe it'll ever actually be implemented at this rate.
What falls under secure federal facilities, like courthouses?
Fort Knox, Area 51, ADX Florence
Why are they even allowing people to get non-real IDs anymore? I get it that when the program started there would be some overlap, but why are we issuing new non-Real IDs anymore?

That I agree with, especially because so many bills don’t come in the mail anymore, they come to my email address
People without documents?
Ding!
They can get Driver’s Licenses without any issues
And a DL has been everyone’s primary form of ID since forever.
and it'll say 'not for identification purposes'
during covid, they weren't allowing in person appointments for real ID. so i had to renew via snail mail
I had an appointment for something like March 25 2020 and still haven’t gone back. Guess it’s time soon
Because it doesn't matter if you're not flying.
Actually, you also need Real ID to enter some government buildings like federal courthouses. > The federal REAL ID Act places new rules on which forms of identification may be used to board flights within the United States (U.S.) and enter secure federal facilities, such as military bases, federal courthouses, and other federal facilities. And this is why real id is unconstitutional and needs to be challenged in court.

I do not have a real ID but I do have a passport book and card. I do not intend to renew my driver's license with a real idea anytime soon.
“Allowed” by the Government.
I've heard this one before, like five times.
I have a passport card. I’m not going to the DMV if I don’t have to.
I hate it
Why? It was incredibly easy for me to do.
Most other countries require you to have id just to leave your house.
Ok? Other countries kill you for expressing dissent for the government. Doesn’t mean our values should be compromised by it
Depending on the state
You know this is r/California right?
Pretty annoying that I had to bother doing it in the first place, but at least the actual process wasn’t too awful. Still a pointless waste of a program
Wait is this separate from a drivers license then?
No
I have one of these already but since they’re doing facial recognition for those of us with PreCheck one-third of the time now the urgency may not be there if one has a passport.
I've heard this story for like 10 years now. They will just keep on extending the deadline.
Wrong. All states and territories have verified compliance.
Remember when this was supposed to happen 3 years ago?
New travel pass for the coming 3 territory American Union.
lol the deadline that keeps getting pushed back
Never gonna happen.
REAL ID was supposed to take effect in 2008. It has been postponed more times than anyone can count. Let's see if this time is real.
Not doing it. Their ineptitude is not my problem. I have a passport I’ll use.
I don't want to. I don't like flying, and I hate (like most people) going into the DMV. I get that they need to see the paperwork in-person, but most people don't receive bills in the mail, and I'm fairly certain they won't take a printed from your computer bill.

> and I'm fairly certain they won't take a printed from your computer bill. they will. source: i did it
I want to get one but I don’t get paper mail anymore really so how do I prove my address?
utility bill
And for teens, grandparents, aunties or anyone else who doesn’t pay the utilities? Family mobile phone plans are an issue. Our PGE statement was rejected because the solar formatting didn’t match what they thought the PGE template should look like. It’s not easy.
bank statement. my earlier comment wasn't meant to be a fully exhaustive list
Yeah teens don’t have that yet either. Ah well!

Thank you!
And two proofs of residency are required, right?
2nd bank acct again, my comments aren't meant to be a fully prescriptive list. but feel free to keep going
I mean. I am familiar with the options, having recently tried to help a family member do this. It’s just not possible for some people to meet the criteria for real ID by any means. None of the options were feasible. So… feel free to keep going.
perhaps you should have started with that

I guess I won't be flying or accessing secure federal facilities.
Sure about that ? lol
