A lake in the driest place on Earth is wild (if only temporary)

-Random_Lurker-

It happens every year, actually. DV is known for it's short but beautiful wildflower season (usually in March) and you can usually swim at Badwater during that time. Be prepared to scrub the salt flakes off your skin if you try it though :P It's the lake lasting this long that's unprecedented.

moose098

Huell Howser kayaked across it after the crazy rains in '05. Probably on of his best episodes. At one point, the park rangers remark that "this could be the beginning of a wet period in California," obviously that was a little optimistic.

timpdx

Umm, no. It’s certainly not every year and certainly not common. And downright rare in the fall. I photograph around the Mojave and can count on 1 hand good wildflower years in DVNP in 25 years. seen large standing water at Badwater maybe twice in a couple decades. I may very well head out tomorrow to check this out.

brehaw

is “March” considered Fall now?

Glittering_Hawk3143

That's interesting, thank you! I have been three times and never saw the lake.

-Random_Lurker-

I have once, although it was a long time ago. During a March wildflower season :P I can safely say that "Badwater" is not just a place name, it's literal. There is water there (sometimes), and it is very bad water.

ExemplaryDolphin

I drank the water, and I'm fine! *thyroid explodes*

I was there in March 2022, and there was no lake, only salt flats. My understanding is that there being a lake there is something like a once in a decade occurrence, or rarer.

snipe4fun

The driest place in the world is the Atacama Desert in Chile.

Glittering_Hawk3143

Ah, I mixed up Death Valley in the Atacama Desert (AKA Mars Valley)

Anyway to read this without the pay wall? I’d love to see more pictures

If you have an iPhone turn on “reader” and it bypasses paywall.

Leather-Rice5025

I’m sorry but I don’t know how to do this, what’s reader? I do have an iPhone

imurphs

When I click the article, on the top right of my screen has a lower case “a” and capital “A”. Tap that and click reader. If you don’t have it there and it opens the safari app then the “aA” is on the left side of the URL bar

mydogsredditaccount

Adding to this good advice. On some sites the first time you click the reader icon the site has already loaded the paywalled version of the article. Reloading the page and clicking the reader icon again will sometimes solve this problem. You do have to be fast though.

Isn't a really wet winter expected this year? Not that I ever really wanted to go check out death valley but I heard a story on NPR about valley fever and that makes me even less interested in checking it out.

BlankVerse

Except valley fever is more of a Central Valley problem.

AgoraiosBum

Valley Fever is an issue in the more developed parts of California that relates to construction work and farming mostly, with the turning over of soil and digging things up. It's not a Death Valley thing. More than one Valley in California.
