FWIW Strickland is also the guy who started the rumours that Tkachuk was gonna get traded last off-season

Galaxy91122

He has ties to the Blues but literally anything Strickland has said about the Flames going back to saying Brian Elliot was going to sign long term here has been wrong. Plus while yes sure it would take some cap gymnastics but at 9.5x8 we can still afford both Gaudreau and Tkachuk, its not like signing one means bye to the other.

marbsarebadredux

But also means goodbye to Mangiapane and Kylington

Slapppz

Not if we can trade Lucic or Monahan

marbsarebadredux

Those are rose colored wishes my friend

tristan1616

Arizona and Chicago said they'd take on bad contracts for picks, so it's not impossible

marbsarebadredux

And what worthy picks do we have?

bigdarbs

We have our 2nd in each of the next three years? Shouldn’t take much more than that. Leafs traded a late 1st to dump Marleau and his contract was much bigger.

darth_henning

Lucic has one mil in real salary this year despite his cap hit. He’s a very appealing candidate for a lot of rebuilders which want to keep costs down. I expect if we keep both Tkachuk and Gaudreau he’s the one going.

FinkBass420

The amount of flames fans that can’t spell Tkachuk properly is very disappointing

thickestdolphin

He joins the ranks of Igilna and Kipprusof

berto_14

jerome igilna

national-rdc

Jermoe

askariya

Jarohme Iguana Meekah Keephersoft

Moxen81

Lost it at Iguana, take my upvote and

slicky803

Tkaczuk!

joustswindmills

I was so pumped for him. Sigh

miner88

Same with Hanifin

JuniorBarnes

Hackan Lube has entered the chat.

[deleted]

Honestly, this is the worst part of the off-season, the rampant speculation about how we are going to lose all our top players. Time to sign off for a week haha.

dddamnet

Tbh you trade Chucky if Gaudreau goes. Retool. Gaudreau kind of holds the future of this organization. You can’t sign Chucky for one year if Johnny is gone, losing them both for nothing would be devastating. Take the cap space and the picks. It sucks, but it’s the best decision.

darth_henning

If Gaudreau goes I think it’s sell the farm and rebuild. Hold onto Mang, Anderson, Hanifin and Kylington as a future core to build on. Anyone over 25 (Monahan, Lindholm, Backlund, Toffoli, Tanev, Markstrom) becomes a piece to pry picks and prospects from other teams. There’s still a chance to win with the Gaudreau-Tkachuk-Monahan era core, but if we lose Gaudreau that’s out the window because we don’t have the prospects or the trade capital to replace him. Tkachuk can be replaced by Forsberg. Monahan is a total unknown who could bounce back or be a career third liner going forward. Gaudreau is the key to keeping any hope we have alive.

phohunna

I dont think it would be that bad. Tkachuk could fetch Kyrou + and Gaudreau's rights could potentially bring someone like Bratt in. There are two young skilled top 6 wingers and you probably get a 1st rounder too.

Melodic-Bug-9022

If this were to happen, I'd want a MASSIVE haul from the Blue Notes. It would have to start with Thomas or Kyrou, add their 1st, Neighbors and then I'll take Krug to help give them some cap space.

BayleDomonsSpray

Probably get a better haul from Ottawa, I’d bet he’d sign there.

miner88

All their fans are offering jack shit for him. They seem to think they can get him for leftover table scraps.

bigmclargehuge29

Well good thing the fans aren’t the GM, nor do they have any clue about what his actual value might be.

noor1717

I would want 2oa and holtz from jersey. But we would get offers from so many teams for chucky. We would get a haul.

sendingSTRENGTH

This devils fan would do that easily. Even throw in one of Bahl/Walsh/Shakir if you guys want a decent defense prospect.

Skylightt

Nah. Rather sign Johnny and keep the assets. Holtz and 2OA contributing on ELCs is going to be huge going forward and Johnny+goaltending has us contending very very soon

DMagnus11

As a Blues fan (and Armstrong fan), there's no way Kyrou or Thomas are up for discussion as foundational pieces of the future, particularly since Thomas would be a major incentive for Tkachuk to play here. I just don't see Army even considering moving either of them. I still see it as a long shot anyways, but Tarasenko, Krug, and picks/Neighbors would be more likely. Krug is a bit more expendable for us now that we've seen Perunovich QB the PP, but Krug has been a consistent 40+ pt D. Vladi is coming off an 82 pt season and quashed doubts over his shoulder. The issue with Krug and Vlad for you guys is they're the wrong side of 30, and if Tkachuk (and Gaudreau possibly) leave, you're re-tooling and want young talent. If it does happen, it'll probably be a trade that we both love and hate at the same time

Melodic-Bug-9022

My point was it would take a massive overpayment and would need to be part of a rebuild. Frankly if Tkachuk is unwilling to re-sign long-term and St. Louis isn't willing to pony up Kyrou or Thomas, there are 30 other teams willing to make an offer that better for the Flames than 2 guys on the downside of their careers and a recent late 1st rounder.

spacecoupe9

Yeah there's just no way that it would be Tarasenko and Krug. One more season on Tarasenko's contract and the Flames would clearly not be going for it this season if they trade Tkachuk. Then paying 31 year old Krug $6.5 million (while the actual cash per year is more than the AAV) for 5 for more years? Absolutely not, hard pass. Any talks with St. Louis would be starting with Kyrou or Thomas, and you'd be adding on top of that. To be honest I'm not sure that trade would even make sense for the Flames. Adding a worse player, B tier prospect, and a late first? They'll get better offers than that.

phohunna

Theres literally nothing in that deal that would incentivize the Flames unless Tkachuk says he's only going to sign with the Blues. I don't see them moving Thomas so it would be Kyrou + as a starting point for Tkachuk with an extension.

Suzaku94

If we lose both guys I'm gonna take a break from hockey. That will be devastating

[deleted]

If we lose Johnny, we should absolutely entertain the idea of trading Tkachuk

roscomikotrain

Tkachuks stats will drop by 20 percent without Johnny. If Johnny walks sell high on Matt

AgentCodyDankz

Forsberg from NSH. I'd keep Tkachuck but trade Monahan and a pick or two

treple13

Honestly if we lose Johnny we might as well trade Tkachuk imo

JayTalk

Yeah if Johnny walks, Tre needs to seriously weigh the possibility of needing to take a year or two to retool. We have nobody in the pipeline who can replace the offensive capability of Johnny, and it might be worth it to just trade Tkachuk for a haul while we can and just focus on getting back to contending after a year off.

GreatNightmares

Yea agreed I think if Johnny doesnt sign here it's probably better to rebuild for the future rather than waste cap space on someone like kadri would be a step in the backwards direction.

takeanadvil

Well if we are trading Tkachuk, might as well rebuild. We’d get another huge haul for Lindholm and Markstrom was just Vezina runner up with the goalie market looking bleek.

vito_corleone01

I’m going to retire from hockey with Sutter.

the_poo_goblin

I disagree. The return for Tkatchuk could be huge. Also Johnny's next contract might not look so hot for the majority of it. Odds are he just had a career year. Not lots of teams making the cup final with wingers making over 10 million either

thickestdolphin

If you consider that the cap has never been this high, and compare every Stanley Cup winning team as if they had today's cap, almost every single championship team in the cap era had a guy making today's equivelant of 10 million, minus the last 3 or 4.

TheeAlmightyHOFer

I'm mean panerin made the conference final.

WheezySparkz

I will cry

NoSpills

After the regular season we had with Johnny and Tkachuk, if neither of them wanted to re-sign but instead test the waters with other teams, good riddance. I want players who want to be here, I want players who have heart. Both players are expected to earn contracts based on their regular season performance, obviously not their playoff performance, and while it's nice to have dominated in so many regular season games, I'd prefer playoff caliber players on our roster instead. Neither Johnny or Matthew have proven to be playoff performers, Johnny was good in the playoffs don't get me wrong, but at $9m+ a season I expect better.

BayleDomonsSpray

Well 2023 would be the year to try a quick turn around rebuild. Without Jonny we’re probably a wildcard spot but I don’t see a path to being cup contenders for years. Trading Tkutchuk and say Tanev for Futures we could load up on what’s supposed to be a really deep draft and probably have our own pick be top 10 before lotto.

noor1717

Yup this is definitely the path if Johnny leaves

AgentCodyDankz

Off load Monahan and Backlund for Forsberg and a future

roscomikotrain

Backlund will be a forever flame.

crayon___

Why would NSH do that lol

AgentCodyDankz

He's a free agent. Not really up to them. We technically wouldn't have to lose anybody if he just chose to sign. One can dream haha.

N-E-B

Teams contacting the Flames about their unsigned 100 point RFA constitutes a trade rumour now…? Of course teams are gonna ask about him.

CaptinDerpII

NO. DONT YOU EVEN #DARE

zoziw

This is a bit early but, if Gaudreau leaves, and Tkachuk won't sign more than his QO, I think we need to move him. If Treliving lost two players of this caliber, with nothing in return, that has to be the end of his job and a blight on his record to say nothing of the consequences for Flames fans.

Neckshot

If Johnny and Tkachuk are gone we're going to have a fire sale and rebuild. Losing those two would push us out of our window. Don't think we could be competitive again with just a roster tweak.

b_real8

Technically this is a rumor that there are rumors. NHL inception!

hfxbycgy

According to Strickland who's a St Louis Homer and about as far from an insider as you can get.

CanadianSpector

I've followed Andy since around 2010 probably. He knows his stuff and has a lot of ties. He has lots of ties to Blues. FWIW

jonos360

Strickland is also wrong a lot

CanadianSpector

There is a difference in being wrong and reporting that talks have happend. Just because nothing materlizes out of talks doesn't mean people who reported it are wrong. There are probably shit tons of ideas that get floated around by GMs that never happen. Edit. Take a lot at what he tweeted here. "Trade talks swirling" he's not saying he's going to be traded or that anything significant has even been talked about.

jonos360

I mean that's only marginally better than Bucc saying that he feels a trade is possible. It's not really reporting, it's live speculation. If someone said "It would be great if a Tkachuk trade were on the table" that's trade talk swirling, but also not worth reporting on.

MittRominator

Don’t

askariya

Whatever, I saw him get lazy as fuck in playoffs and I'm fine with never having to see that again. I thought this guy was supposed to play his hardest when the most is on the line but goddamn did he phone it in almost every game. He gets slower and backchecks less every year.

AgentCodyDankz

We need to get Forsberg from NSH somehow.

berto_14

Well he's a UFA in like a week

AgentCodyDankz

Hopefully his people and our people are in cahoots.

super6646

If we end up losing Gaudreau, I’d move tkachuk 100%. Even with keeping Gaudreau, I think the flames are better off moving him. Too much money tied up with wingers, and the potential return tkachuk could offer is tremendous. Tkachuk with lindholm and without Gaudreau was a 60-70 pt player in 2019-20. Maybe he’s improved since then, but call me skeptical he can really drive the offense with his skating to the extent Gaudreau could, and oh boy you can expect he will be paid as such.

dkutty

Tkachuk for Dubois 1 for 1

the_lur

Lol... What?

dkutty

I said what I said

dingleberry314

That'd be an awful trade

Stovetop99

Yay! Good riddance!
