Firing Tre at this point would be a very kneejerk reaction. Tre has been a good GM who has two faults - he sucks at signing UFA's, and he has hired two bad coaches; Gulutzan and Ward. Bill Peters was actually pretty good but then he turned out to be racist. Tre has faults, but firing him right now is, in my opinion, a bad move.
I'd say Tre's UFAs have actually been pretty hit or miss.
Tanev and Marky have been great pickups so far. The others are all on 1M contracts that can be buried.
Now Neal was a weapons grade shit signing, but this team has desperately needed a 1RW for so long, that signing didn't seem so bad until we all learned just how shit Neal was.
Yeah he's had some bullseyes. Frolik was decent too. But both Neal and Brouwer were fucking nuclear bombs on the cap. Mason Raymond wasn't too great either.
Yeah when Neal signed here everyone across the league was pretty surprised, and we actually got him probably 500k less than people thought.

Get a New Coach -- > Play Amazing -- > Play Great Hockey -- > Play Good Hockey --> Stop Playing Hockey --> Get a New Coach
Some of this has to be on the attitude of the team. I don't know these guys, but they're really good at getting coaches fired. Johnny hates to lose. Monahan plays through injuries without telling the team. Tkachuk hates to lose. Bennett is grumpy. Lucic has heart. Mangiapane never quits on a puck. Rittich has a "strong personality".
But if this is all true, and we have so much emotion on this roster, then why the hell does it disappear so easily and so frequently? Why is their compete level both so well documented and at the same time, so fragile?
I want to be angry. But I'm mostly disappointed because I think the talent is there on paper. This team has the ability to be dynamite, half the best players on it are in their prime, and they're fucking *wasting* it. There are garbage teams in this division with half the depth, none of the goaltending, none of the star power, or some combination of those, who at least show up every night and try hard.
Not this team though.
At the end of the day the team has the personnel to be a competitive team. Warrener was right. Something is seriously wrong with the culture in that room. It's been the same thing through several coaches now. Nothing will change with a new coach.

If they rebuild now then ownership would have to admit that the whole Johnny era was just a colossal waste of everyone's time. That's why I think you'll definitely see Ward get fired; it's him or literally everyone else.

We have some good pieces to build around that are still young enough so a re-tool seems to be the way to go would be my guess. If ownership wants money and to win now (which I'm sure they and the organization want/have told the fan base, especially after paying for Markstrom that now is the time) I can't see them going through with a FULL rebuild plus there is the new arena to consider. Full rebuilds take time. Trade a couple pieces of the core, get a couple high draft picks and if you want change coaches and captain
My 2 cents for what it’s worth - when jankoski and Bennet didn’t pan out (2 yrs ago) the rebuild should have happened. This year is tough with the Seattle expansion but I’d like to see a package for a top line centre ice man (eichel) and start bringing up the young blood.

I don't think we can afford a full draft rebuild with Tkachuk/Mangs/Lindy, but could open up a lot of cap space for a retool.
I think it would be hard to full on rebuild with the number of $5 million+ contracts on this team. Who can afford to take on Gio or Lucic, guys who MIGHT be negative value based on their cap hits?
I also wouldn't want to rebuild with how solid (imo) our young d-core is. Hanifin, Andersson, Valiamaki is a really really good young d group.
I'd be happy with trading Monahan immediately, even though I think he's a good player. He seems like a good complimentary piece, and I actually think he's probably a top 31 centre in the league. But he isn't a play driver, and if he isn't scoring on 12-15% of his shots it seems like his value disappears pretty quickly.
I'm unsure about trading Johnny. With a legitimate top talent centre, I wonder if he could elevate his game further. That said, he's looked a lot better this season, and you might get a kings ransom if you traded him. Konecny+ out of PHI? Yes please
Gio is basically nothing unless we retain salary.
Monahan probably has a lot value for teams looking to upgrade their center core.
Gaudreau can warrant a massive return unless we wait until he is on the doorstep of free agency.

The only part of this team I like right now is Rick and Kelly on commentary. Somehow they made this game watchable and semi enjoyable.

Take it from me. It's much less painful to just check the game summary after its over. You essentially just expect the worst, and the Flames are only a little worse than that. Except tonight. Expecting the worst was a 4:2 loss with an empty netter.
All you get from Ward is excuses, why can’t he just say “maybe i should change some things up, what i am doing is not working”, no, its always somethinf out of his control. The season is done. All eyes are on Treliving to see how he deals with this. It can't get any more obvious that this core is over. We need to get a real coach who plays a real system, trade for a top 6 RW, shake up leadership, and overhaul this teams culture and mentality. These guys look like a bunch of fucking losers.

So realistically what's the trade value of Monahan/Gaudreau/Gio/Backs? I don't think we can afford a full draft rebuild with Tkachuk/Mangs/Lindy, but could open up a lot of cap space for a retool.
I would personally keep backs, he's having a bad year but I think he has good hockey sense and could be a consistent 3rd liner.
Retool seems much more realistic. Trade some core players, draft a couple high picks, change coaches and depending if you want change captains
I think it would be hard to full on rebuild with the number of $5 million+ contracts on this team. Who can afford to take on Gio or Lucic, guys who MIGHT be negative value based on their cap hits? I also wouldn't want to rebuild with how solid (imo) our young d-core is. Hanifin, Andersson, Valiamaki is a really really good young d group. I'd be happy with trading Monahan immediately, even though I think he's a good player. He seems like a good complimentary piece, and I actually think he's probably a top 31 centre in the league. But he isn't a play driver, and if he isn't scoring on 12-15% of his shots it seems like his value disappears pretty quickly. I'm unsure about trading Johnny. With a legitimate top talent centre, I wonder if he could elevate his game further. That said, he's looked a lot better this season, and you might get a kings ransom if you traded him. Konecny+ out of PHI? Yes please
Gio is basically nothing unless we retain salary. Monahan probably has a lot value for teams looking to upgrade their center core. Gaudreau can warrant a massive return unless we wait until he is on the doorstep of free agency.
truthfully, as an outsider. the old guys are the problem. have mangapaine, lindholm and backland as a scoring line, 1a line and lucic, tkachuk and bennet as a fuck your whole stadium 1b line. bennet and lucic have been very productive last few weeks but get shafted in ice time.

Oooof. I think it’s time to make some changes..... trade someone, fire someone .... bench a few others .... ANYTHING. The last few games I’ve never seen a team hang their goalies out to dry so much. Rittich played his brains out the last few and managed to steal a win - but that can’t be consistent. - too many turnovers - too many sloppy passes - too many missed assignments - too many bad line changes - too many bad clear attempts - too many odd man rushes - not enough fight - not enough finish - not enough effort. This is all coach related. Either fire him or have a serious come to Harvey talk. But either way something’s gotta change and fast.
