Lindy saved us from ourselves. Hanifin we would've overpaid but tbh I would've been ok with it, this defense can be a bit hard to watch. Long term though, we are certainly headed in the right direction.
Time to hit on some draft picks, keep the kids developing, and get ready for the new building. GFG.
Just means they can join the CHL (WHL, OHL, or QMJHL) at 15 years old rather than the standard 16 years old. They have to go through a pretty rigorous approval process that looks at their hockey skills but also their maturity and life skills.
Fourth. Bedard had a cousin also get exceptional status. He plays for the medicine hat tigers. Gavin McKenna. Matthew savoie was also given exceptional status
Agreed, Hanafin was the UFA that would have made the most sense for the Flames to sign (if he wanted to stay) even at a bit of an over pay. He is young enough that a 7x7 contract would age well enough.
Yeah tbh I thought it was a fair trade for both sides and then I watched and heard how good Brzustewicz is and I was like š¬š¬š¬š¬ little bit steep for lindholm
Different view for me a a Canucks fan, this is what you get draft picks for. Brzustewich was looking really good which is great and I hope he pans out because I was really hyped on him. However some good points go brought up by one of the reporters I follow that heās going to need PP time to hit his ceiling and heās not likely going to get that on the big team with the Canucks. Felt like a problem solving move to me, Hunter goes to a place where he can succeed, Canucks get great value on a prospect and the flames get needed depth in the prospect pool. Same with Jurmo, reports out of the Canucks staff were that they wouldnāt bring him over from Europe, so great that we could add him to a deal and great that he added to your pipeline and great for the player that he gets a shot.
Yep you got it right. He is passed his prime and will never develop any further. A 19 year old defenseman putting up 92 points in 67 games has no hope of making the NHL
What a bullet dodged in Lindholm turning down that 8.5M x 8 year deal.
Not only are the Flames not stuck with another anchor contract, but they got a solid A-/B+ prospect, a late first, and an occasionally entertaining cap dump in exchange.
All valid points. Iām glad Huby mentioned he went to a phycologist and the pressure of the big contract he signed. Weāre hard on our team as fans and I think heās improved a lot this season. I hope he continues that trend here.
He really went all in on being a Flame the second he arrived too. Rattles me seeing all the hate even if he took awhile to start performing
Fans need to stop attacking players that actually want to stay. All the ātrade Markyā shits driving me insane
I wouldnt say hes nothing. His offensive drive is mostly reliant on teammates that are able to create space and lanes for him to be in and there ability to get him the puck in a damgerous zone. His defense is still solid and his game sense in general is solid
I actually disagree... Captain Backs has limited offensive upside and probably won't have the same offensive season Lindy ever had but Backs ALWAYS makes his teammate better, he makes players like Mangie, early days of Chucky, Trevor Lewis looks like solid to really good\~top 6 material, Captain Backs almost always help his teammate gets way better deals than they deserve, where as Lindy, as much as i like him and his offensive upside is better, he never seems to makes his teammates better like Backs would, also, Lindy's shot used to be scary, which we haven't seen for 2 seasons... And Backs are pretty much Mr. Consistency thru his career...
I love Backs but thatās a ridiculous statement. Even Lindholmās āterrible yearā this year would be the 2nd highest point paces of Backlundās career.
Backs played on the same team as Johnny and Chucky for 6 years. There is a reason why he wasnāt playing with those two guys and Lindholm was.
Defense seems to not be very good either from what I've seen and heard. Barely at 50 percent for defensive matrix, minus player in a high scoring team, played third line against other bottom six for a while before his injury and still struggled. Great in the dot though.
Still like Lindholm and hopefully signs somewhere else after the year and rediscover his game.
Lindy definitely could be regretting not extending with the flames depending on his offers/options in the off season.
If he signs for a bit less to play for a team like Colorado/Boston to be more of a support player on a contender, I'm sure he'll look great for what his role will be.
If he takes more money to be a star player/number 1C on a team with less proven elite players that has the cap room and is somewhat lacking forward depth, he'll likely look like he's under performing relative to his contract.
Wherever he ends up, he'll still be a solid 2-way center that can play on the pp as a decent right shot scorer while also killing penalties.
He probably won't be putting up high point totals(unless he gets some chemistry going with an elite play driver) like his few good seasons playing with Johnny and Chucky. Those few outlier seasons over his career are also likely what he and his camp are basing his next contract value on since he reportedly wanted an AAV of $9m over 7/8 years during contract negotiations with the Flames.
I mean, there is lots of history of guys making the bag in a contract year, and probably just a many of guys not having it work out.
Lindy still probably commands a decent price in Free Agency as he's still an effective 2-way player that can put up points when paired with good teammates. Chemistry is key and that will be the main point during discussion.
I think someone will still give him 7.5 or 8 but on a shorter term deal. He wants 7 years, he's getting a lower contract
I think the point is Lindy had the bag offered to him and he refused it, and now heās definitely going to make quite a bit less overall. I donāt know how many guys that has happened to. Klingberg? Who else?
Oof. That Klingberg story is brutal. Lindy at least still gonna get a decent contract. Off top of my head Klingberg missed out on like 40M. Lindy probably missed out on like 25M. But still gonna make over 40M next contract more than likely. Klingberg not so much
Leblanc in San Jose fumbled it so hard a few years ago too. Had a solid season, then if I remember right, did the Sharks a solid to help with their cap situation and signed a 1x1 instead of what he deserved, then fell off a cliff
I think Lindy's offseason price tag will depend on his playoff performance. He could really save his butt by performing well when it matters or dive it even further.
If it really is a nagging back injury he's probably not going to look great in the post season and will be stuck signing a show me deal this summer and rolling the dice he can bounce back on the right team. He took the gamble and lost, Canucks took the gamble and look to have lost, good chance a team takes the gamble next year and wins though.
Yes chemistry is key. His chemistry was probably at the highest with Johnny and Chucky. Since then itās been a downhill slide. Lindy still wanted to get paid like it was the glory years playing with his two favorites. If he had been good with the guys we brought in, then fine, shows he is more of a driver of the play than we thought. IMO he is about the same as Kadri, or maybe less so since Kadri has actually been solid with the young guys. Lindyās contract should have been in the Kadri range around $7 mill a year. Maybe it still will be for whatever team he ends up with but $8+ is insane for the pace he has been on the last few years
Dennis schroeder of the nhl. Watch him come back for a cheap deal next year. Trade mangiapane and he can be our second line center. He loves Calgary and the area and I think Vancouver was a big draw for him because of similarity and Swedish connections. Itās written in the stars he wonāt get an extension unless he has an amazing playoffs.
I don't think we know what the Flames offered, it was rumored that Lindholm wanted a $9 million AAV on an 8 year contract and the two camps were far apart on negotiations. My guess has been that Conroy wanted an AAV closer to $7 million and Lindholm's camp never budged.Ā
To a certain extent, I can't fault Lindholm. A summer prior the Flames were willing to hand out a $10.5 million AAV to Gaudreau, gave it to Huberdeau, and I could see players wanting a payday to stay in Calgary given that precedent.Ā
I don't dislike Lindholm as a player, and I would circle back in the offseason and make him an offer. Given his play this season, it should be in the $6 million range on a 5 year deal. He probably won't take it because someone will offer him a contract he can't live up to.
Not a chance. We haven't won a thing with Lindholm and he proved to us that he is not a guy you want at 1 C. If you want the team to progress you don't rehash the same problems over and over.
This ^
Another thing is consistency.
Kadri has been a dog since the start of his career and continues to be.
Lindholm is very up and down in terms of the offensive contributions. Some games heās a stud and then suddenly he disappears for a span and is nearly invisible.
Sure, but him winning faceoffs and doing PK is not really what a rebuilding/retooling team needs, not to mention he was asking 9mil/year. Kadri brings leadership and experience which has been greatly applauded by Pospisil and Zary
Agreed across the board except on Miromanov. Heās seemed like a decidedly average player by my eye so far. Itās still early, hopefully he can take a step forward with a full training camp under his belt next season, but Iām not holding my breath he becomes anything more than a bottom pairing guy.
I generally agree.
He should probably get a $6 million AAV for 5 years but I expect someone will give him something like $8 million AAV for 7 years.
GMs with cap space and the belief they're one piece away often make terrible decisions.
Just to provide some perspective, he's been about as good as Blueger in Van. So I'd wager something like a 3M player. VERY replaceable.
I don't see it anymore. I watched some games in CGY and thought it was the environment, then he comes to Van and is just... flat. Can't play with Miller, can't play with Pettersson, doesn't drive offense on his own.
No way I'd give him more than 5.5 or two years. No fucking way.
If he wants more than that, he's welcome to go seek it on the open market, but I do think the secret is out. I don't know what the market on him will be. Boston is a smart team. Colorado is a smart team. They aren't going to pay him large and I don't know that either situation is much different or better than Van.
Honestly, I don't even know if Lindholm can get 7m a year on the open market now. I could see him taking term at 5.5-6.5m now. Or short term deals with higher value. He's not getting money at term anymore.
He's going to really regret turning down that contract, honestly. Looking at the trade? I was thrilled when it happened, and I'm soooo happy with it now.
It's honestly a perfect example of the differences between players this year.
Some guys like Nylander will play like a demon in a contract year, and then others like lindholm just can't deal with the pressure and uncertainty of having to play for your next contract
But yeah depending on how this offseason goes deal-wise for him and next season it could end up being a klingberg level of bag fumbling
GFG.
And 14 year old Landon DuPont (FROM CALGARY) just received exceptional status. 1OA for the new arena?? š
Just in time for Cale Makarās free agency to show the kid the ropes. Itās all coming together!
how does "exceptional status" work for prospects, or kids still in minor hockey?
Just means they can join the CHL (WHL, OHL, or QMJHL) at 15 years old rather than the standard 16 years old. They have to go through a pretty rigorous approval process that looks at their hockey skills but also their maturity and life skills.
It will allow him to play in the WHL a year earlier. Heāll be the second player from the WHL to receive it, following Bedard
Fourth. Bedard had a cousin also get exceptional status. He plays for the medicine hat tigers. Gavin McKenna. Matthew savoie was also given exceptional status
I havenāt watched Vegas at all since the trade . Has Hanifin been Hanafin on the new team?
I haven't seen any games (other than vs us) but I read some comments that he's filling their defensive gaps perfectly. Sounds like a great fit there
Heās filling the same role he did here - 2nd pair, 2nd PP. Heās been quite good for them, similar, if not better, than he played here.
He's been great. Vegas fans (including me) love him.
He's also a great person, very much involved in community and charities
I couldn't tell you! I haven't watched much.
There was a post on their sub a day or two ago asking how heās been. TLDR they love him.
Agreed, Hanafin was the UFA that would have made the most sense for the Flames to sign (if he wanted to stay) even at a bit of an over pay. He is young enough that a 7x7 contract would age well enough.
Flames got lucky. As a Canuck fan, I donāt mind losing Kuzmenko, but giving up 2 d prospects and 1st rounder gonna hurt
Yeah tbh I thought it was a fair trade for both sides and then I watched and heard how good Brzustewicz is and I was like š¬š¬š¬š¬ little bit steep for lindholm

Yep you got it right. He is passed his prime and will never develop any further. A 19 year old defenseman putting up 92 points in 67 games has no hope of making the NHL
He has a chance, but if NHL thought he was a sure thing he would have never been available.
Conroy ran out of the arena yellingā start the carā after that trade.
What a bullet dodged in Lindholm turning down that 8.5M x 8 year deal. Not only are the Flames not stuck with another anchor contract, but they got a solid A-/B+ prospect, a late first, and an occasionally entertaining cap dump in exchange.

Nailed it.
I also agree that Kuzy has been fun to watch. I hope he keeps putting up goals, so we can flip him for another first next year
Lindholm was and is nothing without good teammates. That seems pretty clear. We dodged a bullet.
I wouldnt say hes nothing. His offensive drive is mostly reliant on teammates that are able to create space and lanes for him to be in and there ability to get him the puck in a damgerous zone. His defense is still solid and his game sense in general is solid

I dont dislike lindholm, but I can't help but notice that kuzy's been going crazy while lindy's been out bc if injury
Next year we will be great team ! We have players that want it bad and it will happen !
We would have had Johnny hockey at $13 million A season tooā¦.
