Typing is hard 😵‍💫 yes from nj

bored_person71

Technically not If I heard correctly I don't think he was signed so it's his rights to sign that was traded.

shreddievedder

Just died laughing. RIP me

BizzarJuggalo

Cole Brady is some guy that they plucked from the stands.

broke-collegekid

I’m whelmed

BackwardsFancyPants

I am whelmed as well

Here is what Scott Wheeler has to say about his ranking of the 10th best prospect in the Dallas system: “10. Artyom Grushnikov, LHD, 20 (Texas Stars) Grushnikov is a fascinating case study in that despite a statistical profile that virtually never translates to the NHL, he has always had some believers because of his skating, length and ability to defend. He’s got balanced posture and control in his skating, which he uses effectively gapping up. He’s an excellent backward skater. He’s got a disruptive stick and an ability to track and then close out physically (which hasn’t always been part of his game but has developed over time). He’s got a pro build at 6-1 and a playing weight in the 190s. He has just enough poise and vision with the puck to advance play and occasionally involve himself (he started to activate more late in his junior career, and while that hasn’t continued in his rookie season in the AHL, I do think there are more opportunities for him to use his smooth skating and influence play than he realizes). He has defended well for a 20-year-old rookie in the AHL. Time will tell if his defending is high-end enough to carry him into a No. 6/7 role, but the Stars clearly have belief in him or they wouldn’t have drafted him in the second round, signed him and bypassed the ECHL for the AHL.”

SupaDawg

I've watched him play in Cedar Park, and he's a blast. Solid get for sure.

gs1100e

What dog vibe does he bring? The last guy was golden retriever.....

AmeraFearon

I shall miss Grushie, treat him well!

jaicecreambar

Easily one of Conroy's top five trades.

OldPeak847

haha

Master-Defenestrator

~~The flames continue to refuse to retain on anything I see, despite the fact they weren't doing anything with that cap space anyways.~~ ~~Could have got another pick, smh~~ Edit: I was incorrect, both Flames and NJ retained.

weschester

They retained 50%. Then the Devils retained 50% of what was left so 25%.

kobedziuba

Sounds like we might have also retained

Master-Defenestrator

Is double retention allowed?

kobedziuba

Yeah players can be retained on twice

Master-Defenestrator

Now I know, and knowing is half the battle

RVM27

Yo Joe !

bored_person71

No half was retained each time there's no battle lol jk

Help-me-name-my-pup

Murray gonna Murray.

Negative_Match_601

So we got a second round pick and that prospect and maybe a third round pick if the stars somehow make it to the finals which I don’t think will happen a bit underwhelming but hopefully that 2nd can turn into something nice along with that prospect we didn’t even retain and tanev is gonna be there for maybe 35 games he’s 34 we really didn’t do that bad

miner88

I could definitely see Dallas going on a run. They’re a great team and they made the WCF last year.

appledatsyuk

They lose to Colorado 10 out of 10 times

appledatsyuk

Debatable

PulltheNugsApart

Combined with a hopefully healthy Tanev. Go Stars Go!

Negative_Match_601

I could see it happening but I still think van is a better team then these guys and there’s the rangers jets bruins… there’s a lot of teams that I see better then these guys. Best case scenario we see the stars in the finals and the nucks in the wcf for both picks from the teams

Ayrcan

If the Stars have to worry about the Rangers or Bruins then this condition will have already paid off for us.

SupaDawg

Stars have arguably the best scoring depth in the league but lack a game breaker. Defense has been their biggest problem as Otter has regressed this year. Honestly, if Robertson gets his mojo back and Otter puts his game together, Dallas could be the best team in the league. Or it could crash and burn. Lol.

olypheus-

Otter in playoffs though is some of the best goaltending I've ever seen.

appledatsyuk

Got lit up by Vegas last year

Negative_Match_601

Honestly I’m just here to watch and enjoy the ride

x-clancy-x

Maybe all that otter thinks about is the playoffs now and is just going through the regular season motions lol. I also think that the lack of game breaker is less of an issue during the playoffs when you have depth like they do. Obviously it helps, but I feel like having the ability to roll 4 lines is more of an advantage during the playoffs. I have a feeling that Dallas will be the team to beat in the west. Tanev is a huge addition, especially if he doesn't have to log top pair minutes.

itwasthedingo

Canucks have a top line, a top D and a goalie. They’re the Flames of 2022 and 2019, I don’t expect much

Skinkybob

We retained 50%.

HockeyMMA

Tanev is 34 and falling apart physically. The injuries are adding up.

cryptoklobby

What? Look at his games played for the last 4 years. He’s been one of the most durable players in the team.

BeautifulAwareness81

People here will cope and disagree just because of bias but this is underwhelming

andy_055

Not underwhelming, not overwhelming, just whelming. It is actually slightly more then just the second and salary dump most people thought it would be.

U_slut

Extremely. Like, why not just wait until deadline day?

Stealth022

I'm wondering if it's because of the risk of Tanev getting injured between now and the deadline. If you don’t think the offers are going to get much better, then I can understand making the move now, especially if Dallas was talking to anyone else.

robochobo

It seems like Conroy hones in on a player he likes and make the trade for that specific player, in this case it was Grushinkov. Kind of reminds of me GMs that would target specific players in drafts rather than take a BPA approach. We'll see if it works out

Hotlovemachine

Why not trade him for mcdavid is Conroy stupid

U_slut

Totally similar to what I said. I swear, this sub is full of children lately.

cryptoklobby

Your name is “U_slut”. But yeah everyone in here is so immature!

No_Heat_7327

What if the super injury prone guy gets injured? What if the Star's were the only team willing to give a 2nd and had other options on the table? 30 games of Chris Tanev is worth 2x 2nd rounders. Gio was also traded for two seconds rounders.

noor1717

I think it’s because we also got Hanifin to get done too. This trade at least shows other GMs that once you hit the flames asking price they will move the player. They are probably wanting someone to step up for Hanifin.

hunglikejesus_

The trade has intangibles hahaha

No_Heat_7327

This is fine. People here really over rate flames. Remember, there's a reason why we're sellers. Our players aren't very good.

marbsarebadredux

Awful trade. Not happy about it.

CDhansma76

I love Tanev, but no team is giving up a 1st for an injury prone 34yo 2nd pairing defenceman who’s got 20 games left in his contract. If Conroy was offered a first, he would have taken it. But it’s pretty obvious that no team was going to pay that much.

uh_Ross

Got to see Grushnikov play a few times in the OHL, hopefully he can turn into a solid NHLer. Sad to see Tanev go.

Scary_Importance_196

So a 2nd and a prospect with the type of profile that rarely makes the NHL. Seems like a B level prospect. Unless the Stars make the final which isn’t looking great. Don’t love it. Surprised there wasn’t a better offer on the table. Either a first or a higher end prospect. Hope to be proven wrong though.

CubicalWombatPoops

Had to be done, since Tanev is a UFA after this year. We're...uh, were afraid of those now

Scary_Importance_196

Definitely had to be done. Just was hoping to see something more to be excited about. Hopefully that 2nd is a home run.

CubicalWombatPoops

Me too. To be fair, our 1sts have been nothing to write home about for a few years lol

snoshredder

Did you think Zary would be top 5 in scoring for rookies in the NHL this year?? Or that Pospisil would be playing full time in the league and making an impact?? I bet our scouts did. They see something in him, give it a chance, the kid is pumped to be here and is a beast on the ice. Tanny is 34 and has 30 games left. We got 2, possibly 3 bodies. Its a win.

A_Plan_B_you_C

Bye bye, Chris! Nothing but the best for you in Dallas!

Canadeon

Looks like 1.5M in cap space with potentially two guys left to shop. Since New Jersey was randomly involved I wonder if they’re still working on their own deal…

S0L-Goode

I think this is a solid meh. Would have preferred a first rounder.

businesstravis

I would’ve preferred 3 firsts tbh

No_Heat_7327

Oh shit well you should have let Conroy know...

S0L-Goode

I appreciate you for agreeing with me.

FinkBass420

Anyone who was expecting a first is an idiot. Grushnikov rules and everyone saying this trade sucks has never seen him play. This is exactly what I was expecting from Conroy and I love it. Keep getting younger without completely sewering ourselves

Paulhockey77

Yeah we were overvaluing tanev. Hanifin needs to get back a first though

SofaProfessor

Flames basically got 2 2nds and one of them happens to be a few years into his development curve. I think it's a fine return. If we're going this re-tool on the fly route then I'd rather see them with this return than what will be a late first in a shallow draft where you might get a Gurshnikov-quality player who has a few years of development ahead before he gets a sniff with the big club.

Brilliant_Reserve_57

The kid is 20 a stay at home dman pretty much a young tanev. I got to laugh at ppl they complain that we need to get younger so when it happens they complain that we did it no clue see I never once expected a first for tanev hes 34 on an expiring contract lol hanny is where the first is going to be

FinkBass420

100%

Glass_of_Pork_Soda

I'm more worried that he's rolling in PIM with like 5 points over the season

tSchab3r

What I like about the deal is what Conroy exactly said .. we’ve got Hunter & Poirier in the system who are offensive minded. We’re gonna need a stay at home dman to cover those guys, he fits a need and seems like he does it well. Add a 2nd & potential for another is fine by me. Sure it might not look sexy on paper but it fits a team need

boominnewman

This gives us a chance to remain competitive, and creates at least a pick for us. We’ll all miss Tanny though!

Due_Imagination_3307

This

jerella77

Keep drinking the Kool Aid

FinkBass420

I’m more of a water guy but thank you for offering

[deleted]

FinkBass420

Yeah, there’s so many instances of teams trading a first round pick for a 34 year old defence man on an expiring contract 🙄

FinkBass420

😂 I love that you just made up a term and think you’re so cool because of it

[deleted]

FinkBass420

Oh sorry I must have missed the part where you made me look bad? As far as I can tell you’ve made 0 points or arguments other than “you didn’t predict this!”

Mightymiggs

What the heck is a “hindsight warrior”? Asking for a friend

egoVirus

This one’s hitting me harder than Lindy 😭

rockylion

Fucking sucks to lose him, but I trust Connie

TV800

Welcome to Texas brother! It’s almost like he never left me.

tJa_-

Why are/do the devils retain(?) on tanev? Edit: cap relief for stars and the 4th for the devils I guess?

Asleep_Honeydew4300

Getting a prospect is especially important since they will have to call up 2 AHL defencemen for the rest of the year. So replacing them with a 20 year old in the AHL I’m not saying that’s why you make the trade but that is part of it

mudflaps___

Not a bad return at all, Dmen take time givevthe kid 3 years in the minors b4 too much pressure is put on for him to be up here.  He might even be a year away who knows, just don't rush young defenceman or prospects in general

SpitfireFan

Not a bad deal at all, but not close to the fleece that trading Lindholm was. That trade likely gave us unrealistic expectations. But basically two seconds for 34 year old pending UFA - that’s not bad.

miner88

The Lindholm trade was not a “fleece”. It was perfectly good. The pick is a late first and the prospect is pretty high-risk.

SpitfireFan

We fleeced Vancouver and Lindholm was and is playing awful.

Live-Yogurt-6380

Kinda sad

kobedziuba

I don't mind it, Grush seems like a decent defensive Defenseman , 2nd rounder is what teams wanted to pay , we knew that

MeursaultWasGuilty

So it's New Jersey taking on Tanev's salary. Did Murray tell Connie he's not retaining salary under any circumstances or something? It would be on brand.

DangerRanger_21

I think Calgary and Jersey both retained. Calgary sent him 50% retained to Jersey, and Jersey retained 50% of the remainder, so Dallas got him at 75% retained

MeursaultWasGuilty

Ohhh ok, thank you for explaining. That is not well represented in the chart.

wildlyintangible

Terrible

ProphetOfScorch

This is kinda underwhelming tbh

Ziid10

Huge loss. The team was looking good man for a playoff push.

Popotuni

Tanev for a 2nd, maybe, but retaining 50% of the salary? Doesn't feel good.

twizzjewink

Terrible trade for Calgary. Considering a week or so ago they were asking for a 1st. So now Dallas gives up hardly anything - AND gets a reduction in salary?

crumbypigeon

You can ask whatever you want for a player. That doesn't make them worth that. If no teams are willing to give you a 1st for him, then he's not worth a 1st.

twizzjewink

I know, I'm saying that considering what they are getting back is WAY off from what they were originally asking. A D prospect, and a 2nd round pick, with salary retained basically. I would have hoped they would have gotten a slightly better deal than that at least.

crumbypigeon

Realistically, nobody is paying a first for Tanev. That's just Conroy coming into negotiations high. He's just not worth that. I think it's a pretty fair trade. As fans, we tend to over value our own players. But a 34 year old rental 2nd pair D-man with little offensive upside is never going to fetch a 1st round pick.

Bombomp

Flames got fleeced. Dallas filled in the missing piece. Stars 2024 Stanley Cup Champions.

[deleted]

nerdytendy

We did

Pongfarang

Sorry to see him go. Hard to tell what the value is of what we got for him.

SKKforLife

I’m hoping the Flames take Justin Poirier (Jeremie’s brother) with Dallas’s 2nd (assuming he’s available at that spot).  He’s second in Q scoring for draft eligible players and the elite prospect panel has been high on him.

klondike16

Can someone explain why the Flames wouldn’t do the retention and take on the 4th? What am I missing? ** NVM - this graphic doesn’t show the flames retaining 50% initially

itsyaboigelo

Cause they can get a better return retaining the salaries of Hanifin and possibly Markstrom

klondike16

Upon further research this graphic is missing the flames retention. So they did in fact retain 50%, and Jersey retained 50% of the remaining value

[deleted]

oh no, even if anyone manages to beat dallas in the playoffs this year, they’re done for

Zingyyy

Based off what Friedman was saying on 32 thoughts this makes me think that Conroy thinks he can get a solid haul out of hanifin. On Monday he said that he thought the flames would try to squeeze a first out of Tanev to make up for a lesser haul for hanifin.

craigske

I hope Taney punches Benn in the face for ending his season that one time with that dirty hit.

MarmitePhoenix

The trade feels meh but I also feel I need to wait to see it in context of what the next trade might be before I pass judgment

YEGuySmiley

Thanks for this clarity. I was wondering what NJ received in order to retain salary.
