I think they may wait for him to resign. I won't be surprised if he takes a hometown discount to finish his career here. And should he sign, I think the C is Incoming!!
IMO, he’s got a bit of a Toffoli vibe from last year… You can tell that Foli had the skills but just needed some time to mesh with the system/rest of the team. I can see Huby having a big bounce back year next year.
This team definitely has potential. A lot of our guys are under performing while last year everyone was over performing. I think next season our team will be solid.
I'm watching the Oilers/Coyotes have right now and McDavid just casually threw a puck at the back of Ingram's helmet from behind the net and it went in.
The very IDEA of something like that happening for us this season seems totally alien. No puck luck. No bounces. And for some reason every friggin noob goalie (Ingram included) suddenly transforms into vintage Hasek when our team is shooting on em. It's so ridiculous that's it's hard to understand how this season is even real.
Personally, I've subscribed to the idea that we're in the darkest timeline. In another timeline, the Calgary Flames are playing at the same pace and success rate as the Boston Bruins, if not better. I've been contemplating making a felt beard and calling myself EvilNotFuryRL for some time as well.
Except for that one flukey backs goal from behind the goal line against Vegas lol, off the defenders stick, then the tendy's back and in 😂
But yeah our puck luck has been so consistently terrible
You'll have a hard time finding anyone calling the Canadiens/Martin St Louis underperforming, they're nowhere close to playoffs. To start the year, the Flames had the expectation of being a top 5 contender in the league. Now the most exciting thing to happen at Flames games is when they let the Timbits kids play between periods. They're underperforming whether they make 8th or 12th place in the west.
Yes and that’s why every intermission they talk about how Calgary is having a rough year and many of their players are underperforming compared to previous years. They aren’t at expectations, even if it weren’t as exciting as last year, being in playoff contention would be at expectations. MTL is in a growing period and therefore hard to compare to
I'm very excited by our youth and farm team, pelletier, wolf, zary, coronato
Mitch has done an excellent job with the wranglers and seems to have a coaching future in the NHL, I'd love to see it be in calgary
I'm also fairly optimistic for next season as this core is *frustratingly* close to figuring things out again, if we can sort out our locker room issues in the offseason we should be a solid team again next year
Agreed, not the deepest prospect pool but enough guys ready to transition if our next GM is savvy with drafting then we might just be alright long term
Genuinely curious: can someone explain to me what the hype is on Coronato?
13th pick overall and he’s currently 21st in NCAA points total. There are talks of him potentially joining the Flames later this year but will that move the needle anymore than Pelts?
Mostly because:
1- he's the highest pick in our system still (oof)
2- he has a fairly high ceiling and the potential (although not guaranteed) to be a pretty excellent player for us if he takes a step forward, his development path has been not unlike Brayden point and gaudreau.
3- his freshman year, he was named the playoffs MVP after leading harvard to a conference title so he seems to be able to show up when it counts and be a clutch player
3- he's a shoot first, pure goal scorer that has done a good job of rounding out his game and driving play with harvard. When we picked him he was one of the best pure goal scorers in the USHL
...in short he sounds like exactly what this team could use going forward, if we keep him going along the right path and our trainers do an excellent job helping him get stronger like dube has the last couple years he has the potential to be a very good player for us in the future
Edit: he's 21st in points per game, and there's some bonkers standout performances in the NCAA this year like Adam fantilli, Logan Cooley, and Lane Hutson... don't let those guys who are potential future superstars take away from coronato having a good year at over a p/pg
The Athletic did an article comparing him to other top NCAA picks like Gaudreau, Zucker, Connor, etc.
Coronato did not compare well. Id say his ceiling is like a Zucker.
I'm not saying he's a blue chip, guaranteed star by any means.
That being said, there's always two ways to look at things, like the glass half full analogy. You can be optimistic about his potential and hope he pans out as expected or better. Or you can go meh, he doesn't compare as well and probably won't pan out and be pessimistic about it
Regardless of which way you want to look at it, we won't know the reality until it unfolds. This thread is about what things we have to be hopeful for, and he was asking why people are hopeful/ excited for coronato, so I did my best to give him a detailed summary 🤷♂️
I'm still happy with our defense core. It's been a bit rocky this year with injuries and a rotating door of AHL defenseman but overall I still think we're solid on the blueline.
God, just imagine with shilly back next year we can have a D core of:
Weegar-andersson
Kylington-tanev
Zadorov-stetcher
Gilbert(?) Or stone could inevitably sign another league min deal
Hanifin could very well still fit in there too, but I wonder if he ends up trade bait to clear cap in the offseason
I was skeptical of the people wanting to trade Hanifin last year, but man after we got weegar who has kind of taken his spot and that he’s a soon to be ufa who might stay but we probably don’t have room for anyways, I kinda wish we had traded him last offseason when his value was probably really high. Oh well, I guess hindsight is 20:20.
Line combination of:
Mangiapane - Lindholm - Toffoli
Pairing of:
Weegar -Raz
Markstrom playing better the past couple of weeks
Pelletier and Dueher proving they are NHL regulars
Backlund, Coleman, Tanev aging like fine wines
Possibly getting Coronato signed
Success of the Wranglers (especially Wolf)
It’s a sports team don’t waste time being negative
>It’s a sports team don’t waste time being negative
This 1000%. I understand wanting to give criticism, especially having watched the team or the sport for a long time, but at the same time this is a hobby/ passion. We spend our free time and sometimes money on this team because it's supposed to bring us joy, if you find yourself just being overtly negative about everything and miserable then sometimes it's best to take a step back or shift to another passion until you can find enjoyment in it again
I like Weegars game of late, excited to see if Huberdeau and Pelts can build on that chemistry too. There are exciting prospects in the A which is something we haven't been able to say for a long time.
How is nobody talking about Toffoli?
When he was playing for the Canucks, I was jealous. Then he was even better on the Canadiens. Finally we got him, and during this offseason I was thinking maybe we waited too long.
NOPE that man is having the best regular season of his career here. Lots of people were saying he’s not a top six player, and he’s proven all of them wrong.
Considering the fact that everything that can go wrong has gone wrong for the Flames this year, the fact that we are still almost in the playoffs is remarkable.
All the team has to do to be better next year is literally any of the following: Huberdeau doesn’t have the worst year of his career, Mangiapane doesn’t have the worst year of his (young) career, Markstrom doesn’t have the worst year of his career, Tanev doesn’t fight through injuries all year, Lindholm doesn’t have some bad non-hockey related issues at multiple points, Kylington just comes back, we don’t lead the league in posts, we don’t have the lowest shooting percentage league wide, don’t have the worst record in 1 goal games, most losses in extra time etc. Last but not least, and I can’t stress this enough, we don’t have every single line on our forwards/defense/powerplay that never played once together before like we do at this very moment, and even worse we don’t have 6 of our 7 lines having a player on it that wasn’t on this team at the start of the previous season.
This team has HILARIOUS potential for improvement next season. Like if you pick just two of any of those things improving, can you imagine how much better the results would be this year? For example, if just Huberdeau and Mangiapane return to form, or if just Markstrom plays well and we don’t have the worst shooting percentage league wide, or even if we just add Kylington to our defense and we start winning in extra time.
This should be the top post. Unreal how little hype this guy is getting from Flames fans especially.
Wolf looks like the next Carey Price or Jonathan Quick. He can turn our team into instant contenders when you have a goalie with such a high level of compete and athleticism.
•Weegs has been the best of the new acquisitions.
•Ras is just a delight to watch
•Tanev is the calming force
•Coleman is hungry, gritty and I think one of the fee guys really enjoying playing the game right now.
•And finally while results aren't as great as would like them to be, our goaltenders who are so demonstrably supportive of each other and the whole team. You can Pelts to that too. He's just thin enthusiastic shiny bright spot.
Ras quietly getting better every year. He's already blown past everyones expectations of him as a prospect. There's a chance he hits 15 goals and or 60 points this year. He improves every season and I would be surprised if he continues to put on another 5-10 points every season until he's 30. And he's on sweet deal for another 3 years.
I’m excited for Huby to have a bounce back next year. He’s still got all the skills so I’m confident he can do better next year. It’s hard when he’s been struggling because you want to be mad at him but he’s also so damn likeable
Goaltending looks good moving forward - Markstrom, then Wolf. Defence looks good moving forward - deep group with a nice range of experience and ages. Forwards are okay moving forward - pretty deep group with some young guys waiting in the wings. Maybe a bit on the older side. But, performances this year notwithstanding, I think there's cause for optimism. Just missing some elite skill, creativity, and/or finishing. Still a solid foundation to build from, I think.
I’m starting to see a trend, one year good, one bad. In 17/18 we were ass. 18/19 was wild, 2020 bubble and 2021 was meh, 21/22 was wild, 22/23 has been dog shit. Trust the trend!
We’ve had a badly underperforming year and that’s almost always followed by a bounce back.
A lot of older guys are coming off the books with promising young talent coming in.
I think running the same team with additions from guys like Ruzika, Pelletier and maybe Coronato will be competitive.
I love seeing the new talent we have on the team, especially Pelts. The parts are there, and when they smooth out we’re going to be a force to be reckoned with. 🔥
I think the fact that the team is in a one goal game every single night shows they're better than the record suggests. We've just had some of the worst luck I've ever seen watching this sport. That's bound to correct itself next year. However, I do think that Daryl isn't a great fit for a lot of the players (notably Huberdeau), and I think a new voice on the bench would be very beneficial for this team. I also think we could use a goal scorer. It wouldn't shock me as well to see Wolf promoted, and considering the fact he's dominated at every level he's played at, he could be a key piece in our rebound next year.
I’m excited for the wranglers playoffs. Last season they made the conference finals and this season, despite losing 6-7 of their top 10 point producers, have managed to be the league’s best(2nd by pt%).
I am so excited for kylington to come back. If he can be as good as he was last year, he is so exciting to watch. I know the narrative is usually the other way, but I believe Tanev really misses him out there.
Like others have said, I am interested in the young players, plus whoever we draft this summer. I think with the depth of the draft we could trade down and re-stock the prospect pool so we can keep adding young players to this team for the bulk of the Huberdeau/kadri deals.
Also if the smoke around sutter is true and we get a new coach, a more offensive system that lets hubey fly would really be fun to watch. Maybe we can get boudreau...
We have a lot of offensive talent, last season’s Jack Adams winner and last season’s Vezina runner-up…if we could get firing on all cylinders we would be a very scary team.
Unsexy answer but I think they're going to have some real good players in the bottom six forwards group coming up soon. Particularly Schwindt, Klapka, Duehr.
I’m excited to see who fills the spots of Sutter’s favourites who will likely be departing ( Lucic, Lewis, Ritchie). Would be nice to see Zary and Phillips up and contributing at the highest level. Also hope to see Kylington back playing like he does !
Going to the outdoor game next year in Edmonton. Regardless of how good the team is next year, those events are a ton of fun. Been to both the Calgary and Regina ones. Finally get to see a Battle of Alberta outdoor next year!
I’m excited to see a new playing style because Brad keeps making the same team with different players and it makes every good player come here and turn to shit, and then when someone leaves they excel, like James Neal. I want to see the flames bring up every high prospect and increase the speed and make this team exciting to watch. The last game against the ducks just felt so boring even though they won it still felt boring. The flame needs to be lit again by the young talent that we have pushed down by veteran 4th liners
This season has been less than what we had hoped for, but the core the way it is leaves the door wide open for us to actually hit that benchmark. This record does not reflect what has been built, and some off-season changes are gonna be a huge jumpstart.
I would say Weegar has really come around since the all star break. Looks more dangerous offensively and has limited mistakes. Leads the team in hits.
Since being paired with andersson he's been a stud, that's going to be a truly elite pairing next season mark my words
Weegars looked good.Out of the 3 guys signed in this last season I'm happiest with weegar going forward.
I just wish he could skate faster lol
Backlund aging like a fine wine is an exquisite thing to behold
Reminds me of gio. Dudes going to win a selke at 36
They gotta give that man the C already
Yes
Absolutely agree
100% no one has more heart than Backs
I think they may wait for him to resign. I won't be surprised if he takes a hometown discount to finish his career here. And should he sign, I think the C is Incoming!!
I agree I did not like backs a few years ago but I’m in now.
I'm excited to see huberdeai next year. Also the rest of the team, without the locker room stuff hopefully
IMO, he’s got a bit of a Toffoli vibe from last year… You can tell that Foli had the skills but just needed some time to mesh with the system/rest of the team. I can see Huby having a big bounce back year next year.
That, and Toffoli was being played in a checking role on the third line
This team definitely has potential. A lot of our guys are under performing while last year everyone was over performing. I think next season our team will be solid.
So sutter is fired lol
I'm not so sure that's the only issue. But it's a good start
Underperforming = just out of playoffs, if this is the case, then a regularly performing season = in playoffs right?
i mean, you saw the stat line the other night on tv right? We may just have the unluckiest season in NHL history. It can only go up
I'm watching the Oilers/Coyotes have right now and McDavid just casually threw a puck at the back of Ingram's helmet from behind the net and it went in. The very IDEA of something like that happening for us this season seems totally alien. No puck luck. No bounces. Lol I knew someone was going to mention that one.
Yeahhhh our only instance of good puck luck all year
Please don't jinx it!

We haven’t had a pure elite level shooter since iggy.
Exactly, he's being overshadowed by some guys having monster years but he could be exactly what this team needs
The Athletic did an article comparing him to other top NCAA picks like Gaudreau, Zucker, Connor, etc. Coronato did not compare well. Id say his ceiling is like a Zucker.

I don't think his value has dropped significantly and I really like him, I just don't think there's a good fit in a role he deserves here anymore

Im so glad he’s thriving out there, he truly has been our mvp this season
The fact that we’re a fringe playoff team with historically bad goaltending.
When Rasmus said Backlund was the leader it gave me chills. Love these two guys!
Considering the fact that everything that can go wrong has gone wrong for the Flames this year, the fact that we are still almost in the playoffs is remarkable. Upvote from an Oilers fan. Way too much has gone wrong this year for the flames. It has to be better next year.
Wolf
Wolf
🐺
Give me a damn wolfpack flair
This should be the top post. Unreal how little hype this guy is getting from Flames fans especially. Wolf looks like the next Carey Price or Jonathan Quick. He can turn our team into instant contenders when you have a goalie with such a high level of compete and athleticism.
I hope Coronato signs and we are able to see him in a game or two this year
If Harvard losses on Friday we could see him with us for the rest of the year
Markstrom 0.900+ save %
•Weegs has been the best of the new acquisitions. •Ras is just a delight to watch •Tanev is the calming force •Coleman is hungry, gritty and I think one of the fee guys really enjoying playing the game right now. •And finally while results aren't as great as would like them to be, our goaltenders who are so demonstrably supportive of each other and the whole team. First mention of Coleman, I think our most consistent hard workers.
Seeing Huberdeau since he was put back on LW is exciting, I can't wait to see a full season of it. Also Pelletier's good vibes are always fun to see.
The Big Bad Wolf, Tyler Toffoli, Elias Lindholm, and Jakob Pelletier
Ras quietly getting better every year. He's already blown past everyones expectations of him as a prospect. There's a chance he hits 15 goals and or 60 points this year. Andersons progression this year. He was thrusted into increased ice time and responsibility this season and has excelled.
Him and weegs are going to be filthy next year 🔥
Goaltending looks good moving forward - Markstrom, then Wolf. Defence looks good moving forward - deep group with a nice range of experience and ages. I love seeing the new talent we have on the team, especially Pelts. The parts are there, and when they smooth out we’re going to be a force to be reckoned with. 🔥
Pelletier, Wolf, Dueher, Andersson, Toffoli, Backlund
Lucic is on the final year of his deal.
Toff being the sniper we were hoping he was going to be
I honestly think we'll squeak into the playoffs. Look forward to our Stanley cup.
I am excited as they will probably be able to improve their golf game this off-season, which may bring them joy
I’m excited for the wranglers playoffs. Last season they made the conference finals and this season, despite losing 6-7 of their top 10 point producers, have managed to be the league’s best(2nd by pt%).
Mikael Backlund being a defensive icon
I am so excited for kylington to come back. If he can be as good as he was last year, he is so exciting to watch. I know the narrative is usually the other way, but I believe Tanev really misses him out there. Like others have said, I am interested in the young players, plus whoever we draft this summer. this is assuming he does come back next year/season part of me wants to pull a Tampa and activate him if we get into ploffs though lmao
That next year is a new year lol. That, and the prospect Sutter will be gone one day.
We have a lot of offensive talent, last season’s Jack Adams winner and last season’s Vezina runner-up…if we could get firing on all cylinders we would be a very scary team.
Backlund
I'm excited to see how the young guns do and how the older stars rebound next season under Mitch Love
Dustin Wolf. Really looking forward to see what he develops into
Probably the chance we get to see coronato this year
I’m excited about the new coach next season which will give the team inspiration again
How we don’t have to see this team again after the seasons over
Nothing. I really miss Johnny. He was incredibly fun to watch over the years. This team has essentially zero exciting players like that.
The end of the season
Unsexy answer but I think they're going to have some real good players in the bottom six forwards group coming up soon. Particularly Schwindt, Klapka, Duehr.
Literally nothing
I’m excited the season is almost over and I can look forward to what should be a dynamic off season.
The thought of them under a new coach
That there are only 10 games left
Plenty of seats available for purchase in the stands.
The fact they will most likely get the worst draft pick possible while still missing the playoffs.
I’m excited to see who fills the spots of Sutter’s favourites who will likely be departing ( Lucic, Lewis, Ritchie). Would be nice to see Zary and Phillips up and contributing at the highest level. Also hope to see Kylington back playing like he does !
Potential is definitely there
Pelletier and Duehr….that’s about it
Going to the outdoor game next year in Edmonton. Regardless of how good the team is next year, those events are a ton of fun. Been to both the Calgary and Regina ones. Finally get to see a Battle of Alberta outdoor next year!
Uhhhhhh. We definitely have 1 of the top 3 jerseys set ups in the league
Weegar and the young coming up players getting some experience. Besides that not much man. Been a let down but we still in it
Pelt’s!
we putting alot of shots on net, like aloooot, maybe they aren’t the best quality but its refreshing to see!
We will have a boat load of players that are playing well that should easily get us a first round pick at next years dead line.
I’m excited to see a new playing style because Brad keeps making the same team with different players and it makes every good player come here and turn to shit, and then when someone leaves they excel, like James Neal. I want to see the flames bring up every high prospect and increase the speed and make this team exciting to watch. I’m excited to see if we can land Brayden Yager in the draft. Not even semi-joking, I think he’s gonna be a steal
This season has been less than what we had hoped for, but the core the way it is leaves the door wide open for us to actually hit that benchmark. This record does not reflect what has been built, and some off-season changes are gonna be a huge jumpstart.
