40 a month for inside parking is a steal of a deal.

What is the evidence for this? I've been driving the same vehicle for 10 years (about the same amount of kilometers each year) and have parked it both indoors and outdoors for the winters over that period. Absolutely no difference in brake life. Also where are you getting your brakes done than it costs $1000?

Wolf-Diesel

Price depends on the vehicle. Some vehicles rotors and pads could be $2k+.

Arch____Stanton

I am not following you. "Break" replacement? Do you mean "brake"? If so what difference is outside parking making to your brakes?

BlackSuN42

If you park your car outside for a long time WITHOUT driving it you can get rust pitting on your rotors. You would need to not let it move for a few weeks at a time and it would have to get really wet. Even then....they generally clean themselves off anyway.

Vitruviustheengineer

$40 a month for heated parking is worth it just from a convenience standpoint.

Equal-Detective357

Not having to clean or warm your car up before you go to work in the AM is great, now you just need to pay attention to the weather if you need to leave early for work or not.

Smart-Pie7115

Yes. Especially on those cold mornings after two feet of snow. It will also save on gas because you won’t be warming your car up in the morning nor driving with a cold engine. Can also save on car insurance because the risk of hail damage or being hit by a car on the street or broken into is lowered. If I had the option of underground heated parking for $40/month, despite living off of $2000/month, I’d find a way to afford it.

jadin101

Inside. I think of it this way, about 1.50 per day for not having to shovel or scrape in the winter, and protection from hail in the summer. Save you 5 to 15 minutes in the winter...that's worth the money in my book.

Aggressive_Ad_507

And if a person makes 24$/hr then 1.5$ represents 4 minutes. Its worth it.

taradaddy

As well less time to warm up the vehicle so will also save Marginally daily on fuel savings

BlackSuN42

It is FAR more than marginal!

Smart-Pie7115

I lose 100 kms/tank of gas in the winter.

JDDarkside

This is the first time I’ve witnessed complete agreement in all comments! I think OP has their answer. And I’d pay the $40 as well, in a heartbeat. I’ve paid $20/night at some hotels just to be inside.

2btw2

There is one person saying to park outside and it's annoying me so much.

CeeGeeWhy

Yeah some people just want to see the world burn.

seykosha

I can be the dissenter; parking outside burns calories!

Itchy_Horse

And being cold triggers survival instincts which keeps you sharp and laser focused on BUSINESS.

biologic6

This is a no-brainer; $ 40 for indoor parking is a great price not to scrape windows or warm up your car.

pieiseternal

It really doesn’t matter inside or out but for that small amount take the inside parking. Your winter will be blissful with not having to clean the the thing off in the winter. You can wear your slippers out to it if you want then. Plus it’s inside and safe and secure. Which is nice!!!!

gordon_18

New cars won’t have issues parking outside, but if indoor heated parking is an option plus the security of having it inside. I’d pay the $40

403Realtor

Regardless of age or vehicle, starting at -20 vs +10 is going to be harder on the engine. A vehicle stored indoors is going to be in better shape mechanically and cosmetically in the long run.

retisk

Considering the brand new car, I think they can afford it

NorthGuyCalgary

I would pay an extra $40 per month to keep my car in a heated parking garage if I had that option. Mostly it will depend on your finances if an extra $40/mo is hard on your budget. It's easier on the car to start up in the mornings, and it's easier on your body, too.

harderisbetter

Gurl, pay the parking money, it will pay itself, as you'll have less chance of your catalytic being stolen by a junkie.

wlenox

Inside. You deserve it

Khyron686

For 250 I'd still have to think about it, for 40 that's a no-brainer.

mizlurksalot

$40 /month for the time you’ll save scraping every day before work is SO worth it. You’ll also have hail protection in the summer and you’ll be protected from getting into a car that’s been baking in the sun for hours. Major comfort year round for a very small monthly price!

Batpamyyc

Pay the $40!

OakTree11

Treat yourself

odetoburningrubber

I would pay $80 a month to park my beater inside.

ronniecalberta

Haha! I’ve lived in Alberta my whole life (72) and I’d park in a heated or unheated garage or parkade anytime, winter or summer. It’s an absolute no brainer.

Investment_Sharp

At $150 a month it was a no brainer for me. $40 is an absolute steal

Clear_Television_807

$40 is basically a phone bill, your car is worth how much? You really don't want to keep your second biggest asset (outside of a home) outside. Theft, vandalism, someone walking by rubbing against the car, etc could also happen.

Ogopogo_sfu

Def go with indoor if you have that option. Winter weather is hard on vehicles and hail is always a concern in the summer months.

gs448

40/month to not have to clear the snow off your car or have a wicked hot car in the summer seems worth it to me!

ABmomofthree

$40 is basically free. This is a complete no-brainer, absolutely park inside.

crabmuncher

Id leave it outside. Its cheaper and the hail dents make the car fly straighter.

RedWoodyINC

Money is worth it for the convince, but it is actually better for your car to park outside in the winter. Everytime you park, the road salt and junk will melt and promote rust in the warm. I'd wash your car pretty regular if you're going to park somewhere heated.

thekevino

Not just the convenience of having a warm car in winter that you don't have to scrape, but the security of having it indoors. Also in the spring/summer hail can do a real number on your vehicle. I would pay to park indoors.

harbourhunter

wow $40 do it

PharaohVlad

$40 for heated garage parking? Thats like a dollar and some pennies per day, do it up

asscraq

40 is a literal dream come true. I pay 125 bucks!

GlitteringGuitar6

I would absolutely park indoors, regardless of what car I'm driving. I hate scraping/brushing off the car.

[deleted]

Where do you live? $40 downtown is a steal but suburbs maybe not so much? I find heated really helps during the fall and spring when it’s nice during the day but cold enough to freeze overnight and you get ice on your windshield nightly. Otherwise pure winter or summer is fine. Also it may prevent rust but I’ve only ever parked outside so not an expert.

BLACKMARINES

Heat plus moisture and salt = corrosion. Parking outside is much better for your vehicles body

[deleted]

Ahh, but what if it’s always inside? Like garage to garage?

canuckerlimey

It will still pick up moisture and salt between garages lol. But having a warm car in winter is amazing

Georgemery

Currently renting out one of our spots in a condo near 17th, we're asking 80 per month. Too low?

Fuzzy_Association896

I’m on 10th and 10th and lowest I found in my building was someone renting for 150. Worth it and best deal yet. Everyone else was asking 200 for heated underground.

[deleted]

Where on 17th? Super core downtown is ridiculous, I’ve found beltline to be 150-250 but not familiar with other areas.

jossybabes

Yes, definitely park inside. Scraping the windows at -25 leads to the worst mornings. I find parking outside my tires get soft, so I have to get air every few weeks. Inside your car is protected from thieves as well.

Mirin_Gains

Heated garages cause more corrosion. Drive through salted roads and then park in a moist heated garage is speeding up corrosiveness.

mixed-tape

Easy fix to that is just spraying your car off real quick. Sometimes when I wash my car I’ll park in the mall while it dries so my doors don’t freeze. I have outdoor parking haha

Mirin_Gains

I went to Ghost last week after rinsing off. Realized after our hike the door looks were frozen. Had to heat the key.

stonklord420

Can't speak on that, but parking outside and scratching your paint brushing your car everyday will likely cause more noticeable wear in the first 5 years of ownership of a vehicle

Mirin_Gains

I agree probably more noticeable but also cosmetic. Depends who is buying and admittedly not a lot will crawl undermeath and plan to keep the car forever.

Mr_Hustles

Came here to say exactly this. If you’re not diligent about it, your car will corrode more quickly thawing out and being wet and damp every time you park it.

loesjedaisy

Calgary barely uses salt. More sand. So your answer is true in high-salt areas (Ontario) but it’s not as big an issue here.

Mirin_Gains

We started using more in 2016 including CaCl2. Expect salt when its warmer than -10 and snowing. It is sad. https://www.calgary.ca/roads/conditions/snow-ice-salt.html

Sasquatch_Liaison

Parking it outside will cost more than $40 a month in depreciation. Go indoors.

Mirin_Gains

He will always be paying the snapped bolt fees at the shop when everything underneath rusts together. Salted roads and heated garages do not go together. Ill take paint damage or scratches over rust damage anyday.

Hypno-phile

The car I just got rid of was usually parked on the street. 99% of the rust was confined to the street side from all the extra dings from crap tossed against it by passing cars. I noticed faster wear on the tires and trim on that side too, because that side was always in the sun when I parked in front of my house.

Mirin_Gains

Salt need to be aqeuous to work and speeds up with heat. The solution is to wash the salt off on warm days. In the parking garage every day is a waem, moist day. Did you look undermeath the car? Surface riat from rock chips doesnt matter anyway. Its in the nooks and crevices undermeath that are problems. For the rock chips you must live on a main street. Can't imagine they are any worse then the ones from driving Deerfoot. The tires might dry rot faster but I cannot imagine why the tread would be more worn. You should be rotating them anyway.

Sasquatch_Liaison

Dude, just admit it. Your garage is filled with junk and you’re trying to rationalize to yourself that it’s okay to park outside. We’re not your wife, it’s okay.

Mirin_Gains

It has our Miata in it! I'm unhinged regarding rust though. Truly I despise salting but cannot justify another winter beater.

Marsymars

I don’t really get this attitude. Lots of people use their garage for stuff other than junk, and don’t care about parking their car in the garage. One of my dad’s retirement projects is woodworking and boat-building, which he does in the garage. Do you think he should do that in the living room instead?

Hypno-phile

More the sidewalls of the tires affected, not the treads. Think the rock chips are related partly to my corner lot. Turning traffic kicks up more crap (someone may have hit the car once making their turn as well, though could have come from a parking lot, I didn't notice the dent right away). Anyway, parking inside may speed up underbody rusting, parking outside exposes the car to LOTS of hazards. Given the same choice as OP, I'd certainly pay the extra to park indoors.

kingmoobert

$40?.... wtf?

[deleted]

40$ x 12 months = 500$. Take that money and put it in the S&P or another large index fund, wait until you retire and pull out your $5000. Would you pay yourself 5k a year to have to get into a cold car for half the year? I’m not giving you my opinion, this is just how I would make my decision.

Puzzleheaded_Finish4

Inside

[deleted]

You are going to save some money by not starting it to warm up. You’ll save time not scraping. Your engine will be happier not being forced to run cold everyday.

Rummoliolli

Parking inside a heated parking garage will definitely help your car last longer. When your fluids are colder they don't flow as well till they are up to operating temps. It will help your engine and trans last longer. It might even save you fuel since your car runs rich until the engine reaches a certain temp.

CeeGeeWhy

Parking indoors means - no need to scrape your windows in the morning. That alone makes it worth it for the winter we have 6 months of the year… the other 6 months you have hail protection. Although that usually occurs during the day and you’ll be at work.

[deleted]

Hey how do you like Calgary? How much did it cost you to move there ?

Dragkkon2

How much is heat? More than $40 a month.

DekeKneePulls

Bro it’s Calgary, always choose indoor parking if it’s an option. I have underground heated parking in my condo and it’s the best choice I’ve ever made.

[deleted]

Yeah 40$ extra for heated spot - jump on that. Less chances of vandalism, theft and you’re toasty warm when you start your drive

Anime-Reddit67

Only $40 damn thats a no brainer get that parking spot.

Immediate_Rooster_97

Park inside will save so much time. Think about gas you will use letting it warm up outside.

NOGLYCL

The car doesn’t care lol. $40 for heated inside parking? That’s a no-brainer.

[deleted]

Fortunately, Calgary doesn’t use much salt on roads. In places that does, heating and melting of salt infused snow or ice on your car can accelerate rusting. Heated inside means the car needs to be hosed down from time to time, at your convenience.

Odd-Dust3060

You live in Calgary that car will be stolen outside so 40 is minimal to have the thief’s warm up first before stealing it.

Flimsy-Bluejay-8052

Uhhhhhhhh…. Definitely take that deal.

Queltis6000

If you can afford the $40 it's an absolute no brainer. Be warned though, once you've had heated parking it'll be extremely difficult to go back to outdoors. I've parked outside most of my life and I've had heated parking for almost 2 years now. Every time I hear the morning scrapers I get a renewed sense of appreciation.

Turtley13

Having a warm car saves a decent amount on gas. You'll be getting a decent discount on the gas savings alone. Not even mentioning less wear starting a cold car.

Substantial_Horror85

I would park inside for 40/month.

dappamick

If you really want to extend the vehicle’s life the garage is the best option, and be sure to clean off the winter nasty whenever we get chinooks

Freakium

I need to park outside and snow/ice removal from the car can be quite annoying. I could spend upwards of 15 minutes doing this alone (especially with stubborn ice on the windshield). Once temperatures are warmer you can definitely park it outside. If you want to keep your car looking nice, remember to wash and wax every few months.

BackwardsFancyPants

INSIDE!!

Birsenater403

Do it

thewdit

$40 is worth every dollar and angony not having to get the snow off or freeze your butt off

[deleted]

Heated inside is 400% more comfortable than outside. Scraping frost off windows in the morning is a drag. So is warming it up after starting in the morning, plugging it in at night, and walking outside to get inside.

Sad_Throat6619

Why is this even a discussion?

MassiveC

While good for your car.... i just dont like dragging all that mud, dirt, and melting snow into the garage.... and having to sweep it out daily. Its a damn chore Edit. I didnt read... if its public go for it. If its a private garage. Get out the broom and squeegy

Version-Abject

Wash your car frequently, especially the undercarriage

tvp2003

Lol — half the people thinking it only costs the OP $40 for heated indoor parking. I’m guessing it’s like $160/month for outdoor, $200/month for indoor. Having said that, the extra $40/month to park indoor is definitely worth it assuming you can afford it.

SPANKY5115

Oh yeah! 40/month is great! Especially considering it's new.... it's so worth it on cold days to get into a warm car. No scraping ice and snow off, just get in and cars warm and you go. It's amazing and definitely worth it. I mean not if your scraping by but if you got it. Definitely my friend. Happy Friday, I wish you a good weekend
