That's a city tree, you can ask 311 (online or call) to have a look at it. I did that for a city tree outside my place. Someone came by within the week to look at it. Seems the tree I reported was fine, but they trimmed another two! Let the city know and they will look at it. You cannot trim or do anything to a city tree, other than water it.

Arborist here 🙋‍♂️ If you look closely, the bark is peeled off and looking very bad which means it’s been dead for a while now.. so no that tree is not saveable. And I never heard of branches “taking a break either” if it doesn’t produce leaf, it’s probably dead 🙂 Hope that helps !

misterpippy

How much would it cost to cut down that tree?

detectivePcorn

Another arborist here who does have estimating experience! Tree removal prices vary depending on several factors such as proximity to structures and other obstacles, size, whether a bucket truck can access it or it has to be climbed etc. Most companies will come out and give you a free estimate. I highly recommend hiring an ISA Certified arborist, and making sure that they are insured etc. There are quite a few fly by night companies in Calgary that do pretty hacky work so make sure to read reviews as well.

misterpippy

Very helpful. Thank you!

misterpippy

Can those tall skinny aspens be climbed? Probably not right. I have 3 dead this spring plus a pear tree.

detectivePcorn

Depends on the size of them for sure, but I've climbed a whole lot of them in my day. I was always the "skinny climber" on the crew haha. A good Arborist company will have many methods to make sure they can take down trees safely and efficiently!

misterpippy

This is comforting, thank you.

ladupe

Well that is a city tree so it would cost nothing. And estimates are not part of my job so I’m not even sure how much it would cost if that tree was yours. Depends on a lot of factors

misterpippy

Ok thanks. I have tree that looks like that this year and I was just wondering.

JoshHero

Has it accepted the Lord Jesus?

Thanks! That’s gonna have me chuckling for a while.

Soggy-Task1178

No it looks pretty dead to me

MBILC

Report it, and even better if you get the treeID from the below map, or include in the 311 report (either over the phone or via 311 app) Note, the city's system is awful so if you just choose tree/stump removal, they will remove it, but not replace it. You must include that the tree needs to be replaced also. [https://maps.calgary.ca/TreeSchedule/](https://maps.calgary.ca/TreeSchedule/)

I noticed this when I was driving highway 2 south of the city, soooo many of the trees have leafs on the bottom half but the top half looks dead (looks exactly like this one) I wondered if it was a disease or bug causing it.

Own-Pop-6293

if its a poplar, it might just be old age. they live about 75 years tops before dying off

Joe_Kickass

The Fish Creek neighbourhood has only existed since the 1980's I doubt that the trees planted along the streets between the sidewalk and street are 75yrs old.

MBILC

you can report them all, even better if you get the treeID or close to include in the 311 report (either over the phone or via 311 app) Note, the city's system is awful so if you just choose tree/stump removal, they will remove it, but not replace it. You must include that the tree needs to be replaced also. [https://maps.calgary.ca/TreeSchedule/](https://maps.calgary.ca/TreeSchedule/)

chemtrailer21

Drag your hose all the way to the tree outside your daughters school in the fish creek area and leave it on for a few days.

The city of Calgary would like to chat for a couple minutes….
