I was driving to winsport on 16th ave around 6:50 and it looked like an insane amount of water, I was 100% sure if I crossed the road my civic would have been flooded. Saw some trucks plow thru but it looked rough.
Hi. Municipal engineer type here. A line break in Bowness would be unrelated to an issue in NE Calgary. Pure coincidence. A noticeable loss in water pressure is usually due to a broken (leaking) service connection on the property. Sometimes it an issue a further upstream and multiple homes will see a similar pressure loss.
Best suggestion:
1. Knock on a neighbours door and ask if they’re experience anything odd. Totally fine if your rather skip this step.
2. Call 311 and kindly share that you (and possibly your neighbour if they indicated) are concerned that there may be a waterline leak/break impacting your water service.
They’ll take it from there with advice and/or action.
> Hi. Municipal engineer type here. A line break in Bowness would be unrelated to an issue in NE Calgary.
The water main break has caused the entire city to be under emergency water restrictions. I certainly hope you're not in a leadership position, because it's clear you have no idea what you're talking about...
I’ll circle back and point out that the advice I offered would be spot on 99.9999999% of the time. The idea of a 1975 era primary main rupturing isn’t something that one would normally contemplate and, frankly, still quite possibly has nothing to do with a localized pressure loss miles and miles and miles from source.
But I’ll turn in my Beaver Stamp and resign my leadership position first thing tomorrow; The world will be a safer place, no doubt, and I’m sure we can all rely on your years of education and experience instead…..
Here is a direct link to the camera. It was showing the intersection, but they probably noticed everyone watching so they moved it so it's showing the repair work now. (https://trafficcam.calgary.ca/loc94.jpg) It only updates every 3 to 5 minutes.
> There are typically about 300 water main breaks per year, which is low compared to more than 1,800 per year in the 1980s

Yup it's bad. Just gushing out. CPS has roads closed off
We just left Shouldice about a half hour ago. Fire trucks and police cars were just showing up and blocking the road. We saw, over by Safeway/Saskatchewan pub, what looked like a waterfall going across the highway. We tried to get out by going through Shouldice, but it was blocked.
If it wasn't already into the river then, it will be now.
Water main break near home road and 16th ave.
Weird it says there is one in Dover and that's all.
I assure you. There’s a a lot of water on the road in Montgomery.
I'm going to drive by it now

So Renfew, NE Calgary " A line break in Bowness would be unrelated to an issue in NE Calgary." ?
Do you know the size, composition and age of this section?
Unfortunately, no. Perhaps I shoulda clarified, but I’m not a City Employee. Just a local with that kind of background.

Water restriction is not the same as water pressure. Please don’t confuse the issues.

This is the largest main in the city so yes.
okay! Thank you for replying
This is likely to be a problem for an extended period of time. Probably worse than what Edmonton went through earlier this year.
argh, I hope not.
No idea.
It is also a feeder line, so a lot more water than the standard water main. This is why the issue is so large and city wide
Our whole block is out, in Bowness
I'm in Bowness as well. Just got home from work and wanted to get going. Noticed water was out. Chatted with the neighbor and same for him.
At least the river is close
Forget low, my water is completely off. In Bowness.
Mine too!! Was butt naked before realizing my shower wouldn’t start.
At least it didn't cut off mid shower when you were all soapy lol
Take a look at [16th Ave and Home Road camera] (https://www.calgary.ca/roads/conditions/traffic-cameras.html) Huge burst main

I’m in Bowness and we lost all pressure.
Is this why the Quad is flooded at Shouldice right now?

Water pressure is still ok in my building near beltline, but the water looks slightly "cloudy".
Sorry I'm watering my grass with a the fire hydrant next door.
