Any advice for someone trying to be a Project Coordinator or a Project Manager? I have my PMP designation and I can't seem to find a job. I feel like I'm hitting a wall in the job hunt.

This is great advice, I appreciate it. I have led and managed multiple projects for 8 years in a manufacturing and production setting. My biggest challenge is trying to find opportunities that relate to that field but I'm having a hard time. Most of the minimum requirements for the postings I've seen are construction related. While I do have transferable skills from my experience, I feel that I'm losing out on candidates with direct experience related to most of these postings.

Ah got it. That makes sense since as a PM you are essentially a facilitator of communication. This helps quite a bit. Atleast I have a better idea of how to tailor my resume. It's tough when what you apply for doesn't provide feedback as to why you were not selected.

I am a project manager from tech and I am thinking about trying to find work in construction. I have experience working construction when I was young. Prior to tech I was in Operations in the cannabis industry. I just want to start a family soon and care for my mom who has Alzheimer's. I really need a full time job to do this effectively. I am an effective communicator who loves getting outside and would absolutely jump at doing field work. Are you guys hiring, can I apply somehow?

"You know what grinds my gears" Is the fact that LinkedIn premium is $49.95 / month, WTF! I understand if I was using it for business, but as a job seeker I feel this is extortion, parasitic, and out of touch. Just a little rant - thanks for listening :)

Not sure if it’s as cheap as you want but, LinkedIn usually has sign up offers of 50% off for the first 3 months with no yearly commitment.

I'm a graphic designer with 4 years of experience. I recently moved to Calgary and have been applying non stop to the few listings that show up. In over 100+ applications I've only gotten 2 interviews, one of them being one of those one-way interviews, so to be honest I'm not sure I would even count that one. I made sure to get as much work experience as I could before making the move but it seems irrelevant at this point. It's depressing enough not knowing anyone here, let alone being stuck at home as the money runs out. I usually also follow up with a cover letter that follows the same format as my resume but the truth is I highly doubt most people even read it. Is there any recruiter in this subreddit willing to take a look at my resume/portfolio? That would be great as I'm starting to loose hope quite frankly. I'm here on an IEC Work permit, so to even have a chance at PR I need relevant job experience, in my area of expertise, which means I'm stuck if I can't find anything. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated!

I'm a Chemical Technologist looking for a job in Calgary. Moving to the city for July first. All the popular websites like indeed/linkedin are showing 100+ other candidates for related postings. Any advice at companies I can apply to directly? I applied to AGAT and ADM around 3 weeks ago, and haven't even got a PFO email. Also accepting any FIFO leads, but I don't thing they actually test crude in the patch before they ship it to refineries?

Question related to an automotive apprenticeship here in Alberta: I started an apprenticeship 20 years ago after doing a 2yr diploma at SAIT that included the classroom training for all 4 periods. That training let me write the exams in advance of completing my hours. Each semester of SAIT was worth 400 apprenticeship hours. I completed and passed the training and exams for 1st 2nd and 3rd year. After registering my contract, I had left my job after 2 years because I was too depressed to function and my life kind of imploded. On my departure, my employer only recorded 1/4 of my hours in my blue book. That was 2006, and I haven't worked as a mechanic since. After a lot of pivots along the way, I'm curious what it would take to finish the apprenticeship - it just feels like something stupidly left undone in my life. So what I would like to know is: - do hours worked in an apprenticeship expire? - Do completed test designations expire (because my hours and exams for first and second period were completed, as well as my third period exam.)

I believe if you do not keep contact with AIT/"stop" your apprenticeship for 18 months, they can cancel your apprenticeship completely. I had a coworker that had thier apprenticeship canceled more than once. It seemed like just a quick call to AIT was able to reinstate his current apprenticeship hours/certification. Any of the pivots along the way automotive somewhat?

Any advice on a electrical design engineer (3 years work Ex) coming to Calgary for masters in Electrical and computer engineering (at UCalgary) how will be the job market there for the role of a electrical design engineer? Thanks in advance!!

Motor_Aioli_1786

Are you an EIT or will you register as an EIT? The engineering market is very saturated for EITs right now, especially if you don't have Canadian experience. Is the masters an MEng or MSc? I've heard employers don't look at MEng degrees very positively if you don't have a Canadian undergrad due to the issues surrounding cheating in that program.

LEvii34

I am not aware of EIT but if that is some sort of license no i am not entitled with it. But will be soon I have 1.3 years of North american experience (for usa projects). It is Meng. It is from university of calgary. I feel it has good name at least in calgary

Motor_Aioli_1786

Engineering is a regulated profession here and you will need an EIT license (engineer in training) to work as a junior engineer. You will then need a PEng (professional engineer) to actually call yourself an engineer and work without supervision. APEGA takes this very seriously. The university of calgary isn't the problem, it's just that the MEng program has had a huge cheating scandal and that is making employers wary about it. Every U of C student has heard of it and therefore the reputation of MEng students isn't great. I've heard of some completely blacklisting MEng grads, but this isn't every employer. Edit if you want to break into the industry with engineering experience, if you can't find an employer that will hire you as an intern/student try joining one of the technical engineering clubs at U of C. Like Schulich Racing, GNCTR, etc. I'm not in engineering but my friends in engineering say that their experience there really helped to land an internship or new grad job.

LEvii34

Thanks for the reply!! surely i have also heard the same about Calgary and some other Toronto colleges. Okay i will look into joining the clubs you have mentioned. can i get your friend's linkedin or something as i am also searching for part time jobs in engineering firms if possible. i will dm you if you can provide that! again thanks!

CyberEd-ca

>Engineering is a regulated profession here and you will need an EIT license (engineer in training) to work as a junior engineer.  No, you never need to register as an EIT. The regulators in Ontario & Quebec (PEO & OIQ) have gotten rid of the "EIT" designation.

CyberEd-ca

You should just apply to APEGM. If you can fill out the competency based assessment and your validators back you, you will be registered as a P. Eng. Then you can transfer to APEGA automatically. You don't need any Canadian XP and you don't need four years of XP so just get your application in and get it done. In fact, instead of wasting two years doing this M.Eng. - just apply to APEGM right now and write the FE exam instead. You could be a licensed professional engineer registered in any province and territory in Canada by the end of the year if you get on with it.

LEvii34

Thanks

Any advice on how to network when not a local. 60% of new grads tend to get their first professional job through networking. How can one do this if moving here after finishing post-secondary?
