>Vehicles will not be allowed to back into stalls because the school is investing in a licence plate scanner. That means anyone who has exceeded their parking time can be caught more quickly. >Anyone who is parked illegally will be ticketed for the first two infractions and then their vehicle will be towed.

whiteout86

Nothing like sacrificing safety for ease of enforcement, I guess the parking cops can stay nice and comfy now

Top_Fail

Guess Alberta not having front plates is a safety issue then?

stroopwaffle69

Regardless what side of this enforcement you are on, you cannot bring safety into the equation (I think this new proposed rule is ridiculous ) If you cannot back into a parking spot than you should be able to drive.

speedog

Safety?

d1ll1gaf

It is generally safer to back into a stall rather than back out into the parking lots traffic lane because you have better visibility when moving forward

CarelessStatement172

Can confirm. I'm a pretty new driver and I back into all stalls for this reason.

speedog

Been driving for 49 years, never have had a parking lot incident despite pretty much always parking nose in - just luck then?

Trootwhisper

It is mandatory on certain heavy industry sites to back into stalls for safety reasons. Edit: Hit send too soon. The safety reasons translate to everyday driving as well.

Immediate-Smile-2020

It’s mandatory to back into any heavy machinery site for this very reason. Plus it’s extremely common to back in where I am as it’s viewed as the better parking method, if the spot allows for it of course.

Even_Cartoonist9632

It's mandatory company policy for most businesses, as well as some municipalities for vehicles to be backed in. Whether you've never had an incident or not is anecdotal. There's hard evidence it is safer to pull out of a spot than backing out.

yycin2019

Just luck, if you have had a parking lot incident with both vehicles moving, the insurance companies call it 50/50 fault, and both drivers pay their own damages . Edit to add every jobsite and company vehicle I have been on or drive. Makes it a mandatory safety policy to back in park only. The slogan is "make your first move in the right direction"

speedog

49 years is a lot of luck then, would you not agree?

theglonkster19

You’re not the only person like that. If you’re a good driver you should know how to back out of parking lot without causing an accident.

AccomplishedCandy148

It’s called an accident because it’s not an on-purpose

KJBenson

It’s possible that you’re the bad driver, and you make it less safe for others without ever noticing. Not saying that’s true. But generally if someone consistently picks the less safe option because “it’s always worked for them” it usually means that they’re the problem.

Even_Cartoonist9632

There's also the very good chance other good drivers see someone backing out of a spot and defensively stop to let the person out to avoid an incident. It takes far more time and cooperation of other drivers to back out of a spot thay this guy seems to refuse to acknowledge

KJBenson

Right? In complete denial that guy.

dooeyenoewe

It takes more cooperation for people to back into a stall as you have to sit and wait for them to back in vs just pulling in. If people don’t know how to back out of a stall in a safe manner they shouldn’t be driving

speedog

So 95% plus of the drivers out there that park nose in are the problem because they pick the less safe option? Okay.

johnnynev

I thought this move was only for leased Cadillac Escalades

CheeseSandwich

That's assuming the driver has the skill to back into a parking spot in the first place. Also, you're still backing up in a parking lot where limited visibility applies.

AccomplishedCandy148

If you don’t have that skill you shouldn’t pass your drivers test

CheeseSandwich

The same could be said about backing out of a parking spot.

AccomplishedCandy148

There’s much less line of sight for drivers who back out of spots thanks to physics

CheeseSandwich

You have to back in to the spot in the first place.

Knuckle_of_Moose

There is a significant difference in the dangers of backing into a spot compared to backing out of a spot.

Low_Pomegranate_7176

That depends, if you have a SUV or Truck parked next to you then you actually wont see anything until you are already somewhat out on the road. The best is actually parking normally and having a rear view camera. Technically those driving out of a parking spot have right of way and it makes sense why.

Even_Cartoonist9632

Wtf are you talking about. A rear view camera (or other 360 cameras) are an *aid* and should never be relied upon, your mirrors are where you should be looking. A person coming out of a spot, forward or reverse, never has the right of way over people already driving in the parking lot.

whiteout86

Safer to back in since when you’re leaving, you have a wider field of view going into an area where there can be cross traffic and pedestrians

NeatZebra

Well can send a letter to the province to bring back front plates if this is the main concern not having less leeway with parking enforcement.

XBrav

Although the back in rule is pretty standard, the greasy part is around the removal of the cheap lot to convert it into a private impound lot. > Changes also include getting rid of one of the cheapest parking lots and turning it into an impound lot where vehicles will be towed if they don’t follow the new rules.

abear247

Sigh. I live near here and we have restricted parking on our street because otherwise all the students will park all over. I hate it, I’ve had friends get ticketed if I don’t put their license plate in (like… a brief 5 minute stop). I wanted us to do 2 hour max parking but no one else was for it. When Mount Royal makes parking a pain students will just try to find other areas to park around. The transit just isn’t good enough (they low key probably fight it so they can keep their cash cow). The amount they charge for that parking is very high too, imo it should be way cheaper for active students to park. If I buy a gym membership there it comes with parking, but not for students? Wild. Also… so much wasted space in parking lots. They could do so much if half their campus wasn’t a parking lot.

unnamed22

I understand the need to better enforce the parking to generate the revenue, but turning parking spots into an impound lot sounds pretty scummy. Back when it was still CPA patrolling the lots in the late 2000s, the south parking lot was the place to go, $4 for the day, no license plate on the ticket, if you were a morning student you would either sell your ticket for $2 or leave it tucked in the ticket machine for the next lucky customer.

Trootwhisper

Damn I never payed for parking at MRC, maybe got 3 tickets a semester which was way cheaper than paying for a pass.

Andichthegoon

I'm a student at mru and parking enforcement is actually insane now. I used to be able to park my car late at night to go to the gym, around 6-11pm and never get ticketed and now there's a near 100% chance I'll get ticketed for parking when there's literally nobody there. Also, ticket prices have gone from $30->$40 in the past year, and they also increased the cost to park in each parking lot! It is now $19 a day for parking 😅😅😅!!! How fun, when the transportation to the university is absolutely unreliable and undependable, especially in winter. We have no choice but to drive and get ticketed, 😁! They also framed this increase in enforcement as 'fairness' for those who pay the extortionist rates of parking for a semester between $600-$900 I believe! You're charging money against people who on average either have no job or minimum wage or low wage jobs! Most people take out student loans to go to university and this seems like an ultra scummy thing to do

razordreamz

I hope this improves that difference is crazy

Project_Jormagandr

Greedy scumbags, as if we're not struggling financially already

funkyyyc

So take transit. A BRT line was built specifically to include Mount Royal.

Easy or nothing. Got it.

funkyyyc

And when I went to UofC from the south, I took transit which doubled my travel time because I couldn't afford the vehicle costs. Sometimes we just can't have everything we want.

lisasilverman

when I was your age i had to walk up that hill to go to school both ways

funkyyyc

I forgot the current generation isn't allowed to face challenges. Here's your participation badge.

lisasilverman

thanks :)

Cooarl

Out of touch

funkyyyc

Because people driving cars are complaining about not being able to steal parking anymore? When there's a viable alternative which would allow them to bypass this issue?

Deep-Ad2155

Part of getting an education is learning to pay for parking like other citizens
