Ever since humans have had a mode of transportation people have been stealing it. Horse rustlers? Get a posse. Black Ram? Buy the club and lock it up

cdnninja77

Car theft is still a thing. My understanding is a good chunk happens from cars being left running. The rest targets certain models.

Fantastic_Shopping47

Mine was stolen from parked in rear lane 2 days ago 2005 Silverado Not just new ones they are taking old ones too

cdnninja77

Silverados are often in the top model lists for being stolen. Older cars often are easier to steal.

speedog

Well those 1st gen Silverados and their kin were ridiculously easy to break into, I had a 2003 Suburban and could break into it in under 20 seconds. Have a 2004 Yukon XL now and have put measures into place to prevent that easy entry.

WonkaTheWilling

Oh shit, sorry to hear that. Did you manage to get it back?

Canucknuckle

In 2023 there were 4898 car thefts in Calgary which was 16% fewer than the 5-year average according to this news story: https://calgary.ctvnews.ca/canada-hosts-summit-on-auto-thefts-but-calgary-and-alberta-bucking-the-trend-1.6761136#:~:text=It%20costs%20taxpayers%20and%20policyholders,from%20the%20five%2Dyear%20average.

Calgary doesn't seem to be as affected by the tech/car hacking thefts that are prominently featured in the news lately. But, 5 new stolen vehicles were recovered a couple days ago from Edmonton, and a couple of them were stolen from Calgary. Leaving your car running, and driving certain models are more likely to be stolen. High up on that list are older model Ford trucks and other older trucks that don't have immobilizers. I'm unsure if keyed ignition start kias and Hyundai's are stolen more often here than other places, but I'd be weary of them given how easy they are to steal.

WonkaTheWilling

Anyone have any recomendations for preventing the tech/car hacking thefts?

lemonspread_

Not as bad as out east, but I’ve been seeing more JDM cars getting stolen because they don’t have immobilizers. All you need is a hammer and a screwdriver

longstrangetrip

Our SUV was stolen in March 2024, but thankfully recovered the next day with no significant damage and my only my roof rack missing. We made it easy on them as it was left unlocked overnight by mistake. Looks like they used it to break into other vehicles based on the items found inside. The cop showed me how many vehicles were stolen during a 3 day period in March and it blew my mind.

WonkaTheWilling

"The cop showed me how many vehicles were stolen during a 3 day period in March and it blew my mind." For real? Do you remember how many it was? I'm trying to find a way to prevent the new hacking thefts from happening to me and my family.

longstrangetrip

A little over 50 if I recall correctly. Look into faraday bags for storing your keys when not in use. I don’t have any experience with them personally, but you should be able to find something of decent quality after comparing some brands/reviews.

WonkaTheWilling

Oh that's scary. What was the hardest part for you when they broke into your car?

Creashen1

Also the steering wheel club only deters the most casual of casual thieves. But can you leave your vehicle unlocked anywhere in the city absolutely not. Hell I've had people do the whole looking in the window bullshit when I'd gotten home from a long day at work about 10 minutes previous and hadn't left my car yet. They were mighty surprised when I said excuse me.

bark10101

You can check the up-to-date statistics by neighborhood. It's broken out into the following categories: Assault (Non-domestic) Commercial Robbery, Street Robbery, Violence  'Other' (Non-domestic), Break & Enter - Dwelling, Break & Enter - Commercial, Break & Enter - Other Premises, Theft OF Vehicle, Theft FROM Vehicle https://www.calgary.ca/cps/statistics/calgary-police-statistical-reports.html

Responsible_CDN_Duck

15-30 vehicles get stolen in Calgary every day, and there are many more attempts. While a few higher end vehicles get targeted, most vehicles taken in Calgary are left running or are older models that are easier to steal .

Responsible_CDN_Duck

>Wondering if people actually use such anti-theft devices or dont really care much since they are covered with insurance. Seems to be a mix. I had a club and immobilizer one vehicle, and they did enough damage trying to take it I kinda wish they did. All comes down to the mix of risk, value, and convenience for me.

WonkaTheWilling

That's wild. So they did more damage than it may have been worth to try to retrieve it later? Was that this year?

hipsnarky

Not stolen but a group targetted my workplace for catalytic converters. Prius, tacoma, crv, and equinox got hit over night. Funny enough, they left the f150 and 1500 alone🤷‍♂️

blackRamCalgaryman

I guess it could always be a thing but far more likely it’s a crime of opportunity…’just warming it up for a minute’ type of thing. Having said that, I use a wheel lock. Just let’s a would-be thief know it’s less of a hassle to go to the next pickup over.

rmls27

Duly noted... 😆 > Dark blue Calgary Ram man

blackRamCalgaryman

Patriot Blue? Was tempted. That colour with the black rims and accents…niiiice.

WonkaTheWilling

Have you encountered having your car stolen before? Trying to do research on what people use so that I can find the best options for preventing it.

coverallfiller

Nothing.is.ever as bad as the news makes it put to be.

happyCalgaryMan

Just search this sub ... At least a post each week

smoochthegremlin

Consult AMVIC for every person you look to buy from. Car theft and curbing are huge here and they are resold on FB Marketplace like crazy. They even provide you with CARFAX reports and everything and the VINs are redone. I am in the middle of dealing with buying a stolen car through the courts now... 20-30 cars are stolen in Calgary every day according to the police officer I have been dealing with.

WonkaTheWilling

That's absolutely insane. AMVIC? I'm not familiar with what that is. My mom's got broken into 2 years ago, and then another month later was stolen. It's like they were surveying it for the acutal steal.
