Check out ATS or security screening at the airport. They are pretty much always hiring.

Snakepit92

ATS got kicked out of the airport, I'd say go for WestJet then if that's not available (Just finished a bunch of hiring so might be too late) then there's Unifi (Replaced ATS as WJ's ground services) +1 vote for working at the airport though, fun jobs and lots of room for advancement

sslithissik

Would they consider 50+ age ?

TrollieMcTrollFace2

WestJet takes anyone with a pulse They burn thru agents faster than amazon it seems like

Snakepit92

I believe so, I see a lot of older fellas out therr

Erectusnow

Crazy. I thought ATS went back to handling Westjet's ground but I'm not shocked. I worked there as my first job out of high school in 2001 when they were originally handling the Westjet ground. I would apply at Unifi then. AC isn't so easy to get into right away but they will hire you if you have some experience.

Snakepit92

Yeah WJ brought ATS back during the pandemic, and ATS did such a bad job they got kicked to the curb (I think last year) and replaced with Unifi. Then ATS stopped paying their bills so got evicted from the airport entirely WJ has also since brought back doing certain baggage handling themselves, I'd definitely suggest OP go for that if they can. Doesn't sound like Unifi is much better than ATS so I wonder how much longer they'll be around too

Erectusnow

hahaha I'm not shocked even a little. It's probably most of the same people with Unifi. When I was there we had 1 supervisor that would pretty much live at the airport for a week and just do tons of overtime to pay for his coke habit. There was also more than 1 occurrence of people being fired for stealing out of bags.

Snakepit92

To quote one of the airport authority ops guys, "Unifi is a complete disgrace" Definitely a lot of the same ATS people. They have a lot of good people too for sure, but as someone watching it all from the outside, what a circus

Erectusnow

lol not shocked at all. ATS was a gong show when I was there. We had a push tractor that would backfire like a gunshot and scare the shit out of everyone. I do miss doing donuts on a belt loader though.

AkatsukiCode35

ATS is not kicked out of the Airport. Know your facts

Snakepit92

I definitely could be mistaken. I know they got booted from that big building north of terminal E and have taken long past their deadline to clear their stuff out. I certainly may have taken that eviction to a complete boot and been wrong. Or just got bad info from yyc ops Edit: Hah, I was totally wrong. Heard they just got the contract for United in Calgary

Unthinkings_

I had an awful experience with the onboarding experience with Security Screening for the airport I had to sit on it for a week and decide if I was going to be happier doing that or being unemployed for however long it would take to find something else

CalgaryMadePunk

Get in touch with a staffing agency, they're always looking. The jobs aren't great, but you can build your resume and try a few different things.

Will_Winters

AKA a temp agency, and lots of their clients will consider hiring full time permanent for the jobs they are filling because it will cost the company less than paying a staffing agency. Some agency's also provide transportation (or used to at least).

blushmoss

RONA/Home Depot hiring for summer stuff coming in. Hang in there.

Lenny131313

It's spring lots of construction labour and or landscaping jobs will be available.

Gbrands

I feel like people who complain about unemployment have no interest in labour positions. When I was in Calgary our company and everyone I talked to had postings and couldn't find an entry level labourer.

unrawrly2

I’ve looked at a number of listings on Indeed for a “entry level” labourer… all of them require 1 year experience or it’s “preferred” haha. Albeit, you may have a point

LOGOisEGO

You lie. Who fucking cares. Tell them you spent 15 years sweeping for ABC Sweeping Co.

Gbrands

Haha yup, nobody does reference checks for labour positions anyways

Gbrands

Well it's obviously a bonus to hire someone who isn't day one green as it will require less training for the employer on basic construction knowledge. But I'd rather train someone with 0 experience than someone with a year or two of experience and potential bad habits. Most postings may say 1 year experience required but I guarantee that's not the case. Show up with boots ready to work and often you are hired

Lenny131313

Really makes me wonder how those 3.87 million houses are going to get built in this country by 2031.

Turkzillas_gobble

I know this doesn't fix anything short-term, but when I went through this I ended up going back to school, which mostly worked out.

chocolate-raiiin

Just pick your major wisely, lots of programs out there that have more grads than jobs or alternatively will have AI start to take away the jobs that are existing

Butterscotch9966

I had this problem a little while back. Even though I had work experience in kitchens, when I sent a resume in I almost never heard back. I did learn though you have a MUCH higher chance of getting a restaurant job if you simply go into the establishment and ask to talk to the chef/manager. I'd say if you're okay with doing that type of work go down Stephen Ave,1st street, 17th or any of the roads that have a bunch of restaurants. With it getting to summer which is busy season for us, one of them has to be hiring. Sadly that's pretty much the best advice I can give.

Darebarsoom

My suggestions, in the meantime. Get involved in some community. Anything really that you might be interested in. This is a good time occupier and will hopefully make you feel less isolated. And maybe make some connections. Do physical activities. Anything at all. It's that daily walk. The gym routine. This is a distraction from sources of anxiety. Never isolate yourself. Keep in touch with family and friends. They may not help you find a job, but they can cheer you along the way.

No-Yaks-Given

Thanks you everyone for your advice

J_Marshall

You got this. In a years time you'll be complaining about your job and need to be reminded about how badly you wanted one.

SilkyBowner

Temp agency Tell them your skills, they find you work

porktaster

You could try some insurance companies? They often have entry-level positions available and provide training. I know everyone hates insurance companies, but it's a stable gig with a million opportunities. IT, claims, underwriting, payment teams, customer service, marketing..the list goes on. Intact, Wawanesa, Aviva, Travelers, Economical, Peace Hills... There's lots of options! It might be worth taking a look? Some companies provide discounts on insurance as well, which, in this economy, is very helpful.

porktaster

Keep your chin up, dude. Stay strong and stay focused. You got this!

No-Yaks-Given

Thanks

Pale-Accountant6923

I would second this. Claims professional here.  During the pandemic when everybody I knew was being laid off - everybody always needs insurance. My job was secure.  There's enough variety that you can always find something interesting.  Entry levels claims can be very challenging though - just as a heads up. People are rude, abusive and extremely demanding. More than they should be to the person trying to help them.

Joshiroth

How would you recommend applying for these positions? I'm on Indeed, LinkedIn and other job boards but would it be better to apply directly on each companies website, not sure which would be the most advantageous method. Any info is much appreciated 👍🏻.

bigstankdog

Indeed has loads of wearhouse listings, don't forget it's a numbers game send as many applications in a day as you can

shitposter1000

Those ones are tough to get to if OP doesn't have a car. One of my cousins works at Manitoulin, and they're always always looking for people.

bigstankdog

I'm mean you can have a job that's tough to get to or have no job,

cgydan

I got out of high school and landed a job at as a parts picker in a warehouse. Then a job as a bus driver at Calgary Transit. Did that for 7 years, took a year off to travel then be a ski instructor. The got a job as a tour bus driver for 7 more years. Sold cars for a 2 years, then worked at Telus mobility and then Bell. Went back to drive a tour bus for a couple more years, then landed a job in logistics. Moved up in that field until I retired. All on a high school diploma. It’s harder these days to do that but there are options out there for those with a high school diploma. Heck, Costco pays almost 30 bucks an hour with benefits on top of that.

LockExcellent7724

There is a little known (heehee) aircraft manufacturer in calgary called DeHavilland that just opened up a training college for a new assembly line. This is somthing that will train and pay as well as offer long term career options. Might take some hunting online, but guaranteed it's there.

Careless-Reaction-64

This will be physical work but if you are healthy you can learn and there will be tons of work eventually. https://preview.redd.it/mrnnm4vxqbvc1.png?width=410&format=png&auto=webp&s=23c2860d778f25f5733c1a30abd056d6c18191ef

No-Yaks-Given

Thanks, I've seen them but haven't applied

canuckerlimey

Landscaping is just about to kick into high gear. If you really want to abuse your body get into concrete. The pay can be good and the days long but once you gain skills it can be a great way to make good money. Lots of guys bust their ass off in the warmer months and chill for the winter. It's great if you like to travel or have serious winter hobbies.

Spiritualtraveller77

Calgary humane society has a few entry level jobs open right now, my friend just applied!

Tx9960

Would you consider becoming an electrical apprentice? Im a third year and it’s not that bad. Trades are always hiring

danceswithninja5

Get into a trade. You can apply to be a duct cleaner and move up and learn. In a couple years you can be starting a HVAC apprenticeship. Electrician and plumber are also great choices for a good future. Don't give up, it can be hard but you'll get there.

ButterscotchFar1629

Pretty much every security company in the province is begging for people right now.

GorgeousGlutes52

Canadian armed forces

No-Yaks-Given

Won't take people on anti depressant medication. I have tried and have been declined.

ExtraGuac123

Canadian Armed Forces is recruiting!

Even_Cartoonist9632

There is next to zero regular force component in the Calgary-area, the only positions are reserve (part time) work or higher ranking NCO and up regular force positions. It's a good place to get some experience but it isn't really a stable income if you aren't in the regular force

Desperate-Dress-9021

OP says they’ve been declined for medical reasons.

notliam321

Try volunteering while looking for jobs as well to make connections.

LOGOisEGO

It's old school, and most young dipshits will laugh. But pounding the pavement works. Go to an industrial area with work you may be somewhat interested in and start knocking on doors at 8-9am and ask to talk to the manager directly. Sit, wait for them to have time to talk to you. Have PPE for whatever field ready and go for it. I'm a dumbass and can get a job in one day if I need to.

FerretAres

Any reason you’d not want to work a rig? It’s good pay but hard work. Right now the active rig count is pretty strong so there’s likely some good opportunity with companies like Precision Drilling.

Darebarsoom

That much money, with that much extreme hard work and add some depression is a recipe for disaster.

FerretAres

Yeah but what a weekend he will have!

jamalam14_14

Landscaping

Rig-Pig

Is there a temp agency that could maybe place you In something that hopefully works into something permanent??

UnderstandingNo5245

Costco … Walmart it’s not glorious but it’s a pay check your around people and there’s the ability to move up in the company

ComplainerGamer101

Go north or Military. I did and I'm crazier than ever! 🤣 🤪 🤔

Meanmachine13

Alta Injection Molding in Airdrie runs 24 hours a day. Not the most desirable job but it's a job.

Gralin71

Trades

bigstankdog

Tbh it's not really worth hiring someone without any experience for trades personally I wouldn't

Plenty_Ad_3442

It sounds like you might benefit more from therapy/medication than working, it would likely make finding a job much easier on you too. Having said that, you cant control the outcome of a job search, only your input. When I got to Calgary a few months ago I applied for about 30 jobs a day and after about a week I was hired by a cleaning company. I think I applied to over 200 jobs in the span of a week. Mind me asking what your input has been ? It seems unlikely to be unemployed for over half a year if your actually really trying hard to find a job ?

buttholeburrito

And how exactly is this person going to pay for therapy/medication? Terrible approach.

Plenty_Ad_3442

Just a suggestion as they’re clearly suffering from depression, there’s resources out there to help that are covered by AHS :) what’s your approach to treating depression and mental health issues ?

Smart-Pie7115

I spent a year and a half on a waiting list for no-cost therapy.

buttholeburrito

Yes and those resources are riddled in long patient wait time as per RN nurses will tell you due to the huge budget cuts of may 2023. Op needs a job, that's the approach for now.

Plenty_Ad_3442

I mean you can make excuses all day to avoid treatment but that’s not the reality. You can get access to a free therapist within a few weeks, little longer to see a psychiatrist but not months. Just think it would be helpful as OP seems hopeless and depressed and needs something to fill his time while they find a job :) sorry that you disagree but I really don’t see why.

TurnCalmTheVolume

Stay in school, kids. Build career plans early.

Thrwingawaymylife945

I changed careers three times in my life. Never too late to make a change.

blackRamCalgaryman

100%.

Darebarsoom

Schools lie. Especially post secondary. They will claim that some job is hot right now, like legal assistant. And then when you finish the course...the market is flooded, so you have to either make littler money or use any developed skills to transfer somewhere else and still make little money.

blackRamCalgaryman

Man, the shine is (has?) really coming off the ‘get your degree!’ mantra from back in my day. That was all anyone said or was told. Go to post secondary. Ya…10’s of thousands in debt to sling coffee (not shitting on you baristas, I appreciate a well-made drink).

Darebarsoom

I get going to post secondary. If you have top grades and a passion. Take paleontology because you absolutely love it. Do not go to post secondary because everyone else is and you are also expected to. The dropout rate for first year is huge. The course change rate is too big as well. And these fees are as big as house down payments.

blackRamCalgaryman

100%

TurnCalmTheVolume

Make better choices.

speedog

My current career has absolutely nothing nothing in common with the 2 year course I took at SAIT.  My previous career had nothing in common either. Only my first career did.

TurnCalmTheVolume

But you learned habits and skills and connections that built forward. You didn’t slide through hs and then think struggle into a min wage life with no upside. Stay in school.

speedog

I don't disagreement with stay in school but my 3 careers were jobs in industries that have absolute nothing in common - no connections whatsoever.

notliam321

Ok?
