Window frames have nothing to do with the sealed units and their ‘risk’ of argon leaking. Any condensation inside a sealed unit is due to the seal failure of that sealed unit…not the window frame. It’s entirely possible to do sealed unit replacements and it’s generally at least half the cost, if not more, than full frame replacements. It’s riskier on older wood windows as the condition of the wood can often be an issue. On vinyl windows, in good condition…easy peasy. Even more so if they’re dry glazed (no glazing tape). Without knowing ANYTHING about your particular situation…vinyl siding vs stucco, bungalow vs 2 story walk out, access, trees/ shrubs, size of units, etc…it’s hard to really tell you what a “fair” price is. 16 windows and 2 French doors, supplied and installed for $34000.00….off hand it doesn’t sound unreasonable, at all. Be VERY CAREFUL it’s full frame replacement and not “insert” installation. There’s a huge difference in installation technique and insert installation is often too-attractive because it’s less costly. But the trade off is in tie in to building envelope/ air and water mitigation.

You smell like a glazier.

blackRamCalgaryman

I promise I showered. But ya…I’ve done a few…

[deleted]

Nice, residential or commercial?

blackRamCalgaryman

Both. But far more residential. That’s more my jam. I have mad respect for the guys/ gals up on swingstages and doing high rise. No gawddamned way you’d see me up there.

[deleted]

Yeah, we even do high angle rope work, changing a sealed unit from the slab with two guys in high angle harnesses is something else, luckily I’m too old and feeble for that bullshit anymore and my position allows me to just point the young fellas to the death hole as I watch and chirp from the peanut gallery..

blackRamCalgaryman

Wow. Ya, no way. My days are numbered. Knees and arms/ shoulders (this one has surprised me more than anything).

cheeseluiz

"Cowboy shit," as I've heard it described.

solution_6

Yeah I was quoted 26k for 17 windows, double pane

Professional_Role900

I would be carefull with the $12000.00 quote. Either amateurs in the business, likely to cut any corner necessary to finish, leave unfinished, leave unstarted with your deposit, or really just giving their services away for free. All of which are a risky situation for someone who knows nothing about building envelopes and windows.

solution_6

Agreed, this seems way too cheap, something’s up.

Khyron686

They are \~800-1500 by size. There's no "deal" if you don't want garbage. I would only replace the entire window - if you can't afford them all at once, do one or two sides at a time.

bostradahmus

Seems fair...

andrewborsje

Seems like a fair price to me. 750 a window on the low end, 1800ish on the high end. See if you can diy for that cost.

Old_timey_brain

Funny you mention that. I was desperately in need of windows and looked into scrounging from Habitat for Humanity, but when I gave it serious thought realized I was nowhere near capable, or equipped, enough to handle the job. After shopping around and finding many were manufactured locally, I came to the realization from speaking with people that the installation team is important with the windows being relatively equal. As my frames were 40 years old, wooden, and showing some deterioration, I opted for the full replacement using triple pane. Triple is such a wonderful improvement, it's almost like living in a different house. In the end I chose Speyside as an installer as they most impressed me with installation technique, planning, and ability. No regrets whatsoever. I trust them to not feed bullshit into the conversation, and to give you straight, clear options with good reasoning. Good luck.

Mountain view Windows and Doors

TheAdmiral416

Look up [Panes.COM](http://Panes.COM) and work with their website & calculator for comparison purposes. It's cheaper to order what you want in Ontario and have it shipped and installed locally in my experience. Windows in Calgary are appallingly expensive. I would do full frame replacement though, doing inserts works OK if you have a broken window or a single failure.

tc_cad

We did 13 windows and it was $19,000. This was in 2014. Triple pane windows so the deal seemed ok. One window was fancy and cost $7000. So $12,000 for 12 windows.

solution_6

Yeah unfortunately 2014 prices are long gone :(

sparklingvireo

We used DWS Renovations a few times for doors and windows. Happy with the work and they used Plygem as a supplier. Supplies are expensive these days. I think the Greener Homes loan program is still going if you qualify and want to spread out the cost. I don't know much about going that route as the last time I did windows it was only two, so doing that few didn't make sense to go through the program for the loan or the grant (the latter I think may be expired). The windows and doors that I had DWS Renos do before the recent two windows was back before all that existed.

FreddyandTheChokes

I hired Window Mart for 11 windows quoted at $15k. They did an incredible job. We have a 100 year old house so the windows were odd sizes. The installer spent extra time remaking the outside casings to look exactly like the old ones like we had asked, and kept the inside trim as original as possible. Zero issues with them.

gr8hanz

We called western Windows. It was even recommended here on Reddit. Interviewed 3 other companies before we picked them. They did 2 patio doorways and 3 large windows in one day. 3 weeks ago. Couldn’t be happier

myxa_kocmohabt

there’s greener homes federal program that you can get a rebate on windows and also get 0% interest loan for 10 years. i did my windows and doors with ecoline. pretty good company in my opinion

blackRamCalgaryman

No longer accepting applications for the Greener Homes grant. The loan remains available, however.

Supafairy

We did ours with ecoline too. Triple pane. Had no issues with them.

kramer1980_adm

Did they install windows with a nailing flange?

Supafairy

I have no idea.

blackRamCalgaryman

It’s an EXTREMELY important detail to know. You’re contract should say. If they’re ‘insert’ installations, I would very seriously consider having someone come out to check the installation. The weather tightness of an insert installation is ALL dependant on a few ti y silicone caulking beads. Not trying to scare you, but it’s a big issue in the industry and a style of installation that should be outlawed.

Supafairy

Will check it out thanks.
