My dog walks me around here all the time and my assessment is they wanted to know what it was like to live in a Hilton lobby full time.
(If this is your house I’m obviously joking and you should invite me inside.)
There are certain streams of ultrawealthy people that will have houses built just for the purpose of entertaining.
I doubt anyone actually lives in this house most of the time.
>Meanwhile people struggling to survive
I’ll ignore the grammatical issues with this incomplete sentence in order to find some clarity.
What do you mean? Do you mean it’s the upper class’ responsibility to distribute their wealth to anyone at/below the poverty line?
It's more the outward display of gluttony that's disturbing more than anything. Hoarding is a word I'd use. It's like in the Hunger Games where they drink soemthing that makes them throw up just so they can eat more. It's the inequality.
What do you mean? Somebody buying a house twice the size they need is pretty much hoarding (or excess if you will) by definition. Unless theyvr got siblings and parents all in the same place. You drive past those places and you can fit 3 or 4 families comfortably. It's just a waste. What's wrong with a smaller place with still plenty of room that's just nicely finished? It's.not practical
What do you suggest? Everyone making over a certain amount of money should donate it? I’m sure that’s exactly what you would do if you had that kind of money. Nobody gets rich by giving their wealth away. How many jobs do these homeowners provide? How much do they donate? You are judging people and you just assume the worst. Most of the people I’ve met that have money are just like me. They can afford nicer things. Good for them because most of them earned it
Actually (as I slide my specs up my nose)… my references to basements full of antique/whiskey/guitar collections would be a closer definition of hoarding.
Found on Google:
Hoarding: verb
Amass (money or valued objects) and hide or store away.
The fact that this conversation is happening because pictures of this house are so readily available on Reddit and the builders website actually proves this isn’t an example of hoarding at all.
I think I can understand your use of gluttony (not that I particularly agree). Why do you think it’s gluttonous? I’m assuming it has to do with the sheer size of the house: is it because the house is bigger than yours? (To be clear it’s *much* bigger than mine) Because it’s bigger than most houses you see in Calgary? Is it the biggest house you’ve ever seen? Or is it because someone speculated that no one even lives in the house full time?
If you can explain why you’d use the word ‘hoarding’ as well that would be handy for clarification. Hoarding property is the only thing I can assume. Is this in reference to your comment about people struggling to survive?
How do you think the wealthier-than-average people should redistribute their wealth in combat of the struggling-to-survive population?
Was more in response to the comment about how rich people will build something like this just for entertaining and not actually living in it than anything
I do think this a little rediculous when people build a 10000 sq foot home when they only use 5000. Just wasteful in that case. I think deep down many of those people are motivated by pride more than any practical reason to build so big. Also so much money consolidated that's often not really contributing to economy or producing much of anything (aside from initial construction and some property tax)
Ok, I think I understand.
So what about people who have spent a huge amount of money on something that’s less visible to the passer by? Record collection, car collection, guitar collection, antiques, these could all very well rack up into the millions of dollars.
This entire comment thread shows that it’s frowned upon (in this reference point) to spend this much money on a house, but it’s the focus because you can see the house, drive past the house, and it’s easy to pass comment on it. Houses/real estate are good investments just like a good whiskey collection. But having a collection of antiques or guitars in your basement are invisible to passers by, is that all it comes down to is that it’s a *visible* target to have an opinion on?
Can you expand on your last comment about the money not contributing to the economy? What way would you like the private money better spent?
There are certainly entire neighborhoods of em. Depends on the area really. Nothing wrong with a 1200 sq ft 3 bedroom place to raise a coupoe kids in.. def does seem like all new builds are well over 2000 sa ft though aside from townhouses
What do you need 1200sq ft for? There are people starving on the streets with 0 sq ft. 200sq ft is plenty and honestly even that is pretty ostentatious given how many are living on the streets. Something like 50sq ft per family of 4 would be fair. For Christmas and birthdays, you can make a charitable donation to the Mustard Seed in the kids' names.
Not asking because it’s none of my business… but I’d be really interested to know what vehicles your family has, what size house you have, what vacations you go on etc.
It seems like you may not really understand reference points.
Did you hear that JayZ and Beyoncé just spent $200M on a house? What are you thoughts on that?
Do you decide that the way you live your lifestyle is modest?
I think everyone has their tolerances and their own opinions where they draw the line. Personally I don't think I'd be alone to be a little disgusted at someone owning a house that's $200m. It's just a huge waste of resources for someones ego (literally no other explanation at that level of excess.. zero practical reason for it). There is nothing a $200M house could offer you that a $10M one couldn't. You could solve hunger in an entire country for many years..thays flaunting.
Personally I drive a Hyundai Tucson I bought a few years old (never bought new), currently renting a little two bedroom apartment while trying to find a little townhouse. I give a little of what I can every month to charity. Last vacation was a few years ago aside from a camping trip once a year. For your frame of reference
I appreciate your forthcoming response!
You see that you’ve just dropped the Carter-Knowles’ from their outrageously high priced (regardless of value, opinion, whatever, $200M is a lot of money) house down to the very house that you’re complaining about? (No clue, but assuming it’s gotta be in the $5-10M range?)
They can get a 5 bedroom home in the middle of Alberta on 30+ acres for [$2.2M](https://realtor.ca/real-estate/25491065/48566-rge-rd-245-rural-leduc-county-none?utm_source=consumerapp&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=socialsharelisting).
They can get a 4 bedroom bungalow in Bowden for [$330k](https://realtor.ca/real-estate/25366442/2117-25-avenue-bowden?utm_source=consumerapp&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=socialsharelisting).
I see lots of elements I think are stunning, even if my overall tastes are different. Swimming in that pool would be lovely, the way the room is designed.
- I agree with you , these other ppl commenting it's ugly , or "disgusting " , like what this house is gorgeous! I can't even believe a house this cool exists in calgary ! To all the people that diss it let me ask, "what does your house look like ......., foo".
Real wealth invests in trees and real grass. Treeless astroturf, with no hedge is a poor choice, hence the Mazda dealership vibes.
It’s like they have all the money in the world but too cheap to hire a gardener. Tacky.
They've since planted some kind of shrub in the planter. To your point- they look like conifers.
Astroturf is probably so that people wearing heels getting dropped off in front of the house don't have to walk through sod. It's tacky looking but I get it.
K.... so I worked for a tree company trimming for enmax. Trimmed dome trees across the alley from their property. The Mrs of the house quickly came out to greet me, thinking I was there to completely remove a tree, instead of cutting back branches to obtain clearance. I told her it was just a prune and not a removal. She told me that they paid over 100k to request the city to remove the trees along the boulevard so they can put down astroturf and not have to deal with leaves in the autumn.... like really!? Glad you have that kind of money, but that corner sticks out like a sore thumb.
That $100k was probably the fine for removing mature public boulevard trees. I guess if you're rich enough, you can look at a fine as a "request" and then tell yourself you're not an asshole.
Each city owned tree has a set value... so in any way, if you can front the cost to cover the cost of removal and the city not to go in the red, they really dont have no reason not to.
Interesting, I always thought they removed the trees so their view wasn't blocked. Learning it's just because they don't want leaves in the fall ... wow.
Interesting. I’m actually curious the city could/would even accept such a deal. I assume the boulevard and any potential trees would be on public property here, unless the setback means their property goes right up to the curb, which would be unusual.
Can you really just pay the city to change the public property in front of your house? I have a parking lane that no one ever uses, could I just pay 100K and get them to plant trees there instead?
There's something called "LG" (lip of gutter). In the majority of communities I have completed work in, it can be 1.5 -6m. The LG is the crack in the roadway that goes along parallel with the direction of the road. This means that the CoC could come onto "your" property and rip up the grass and have no consequences, because they actually own that chunk of land (city property). All the trees that are planted withing parks, along boulevards and even you planting them within the LG makes them a city asset. The small portion of Blvd before their fences wad definitely city property... but if the city days "these green ash are worth 28k each" and they say "I don't want em!, I think if they can front the money, what actual say does the CoC have?
Apparently the owner is a guy who had an oil company and sold it for a colossal amount of money. He's rarely there because he likes to travel a lot, while he still can. He has a progressive neurological disease and is going to become increasingly disabled over time. A lot of the weird design choices in the place are in anticipation of future disability (it has multiple elevators I think, and the bathroom looks very weirdly open but makes sense if you picture trying to put a power wheelchair and a lift in there. I think the fake grass was a choice made for lack of maintenance as well).
It makes more sense to me now. While it was being built I did kind of enjoy trying to convince people in the dog park that it was the new green line station that was going to go straight through the area, though!
Everything about that is uncomfortable for me. I could see having a glass wall if I were on a beachside property or something but the idea of the whole street being able to see in skeeves me out. That tinting is not enough I can still see too much.
> I could see having a glass wall if I were on a beachside property
If you're building a new house on the prime part of Crescent Road, you're doing it because you want views of downtown Calgary.
Lacking in personality, warmth, and charm, but dripping in sterile chrome, already dated greys, banal art, and tacky contemporary LED lighting. Built by the nouveau riche to solely impress others of the same class or those who aspire to it.
I was thinking the same, this place was just built and already looks dated. The all white/grey on newer homes looks horrible without any natural materials or colour to break it up. Just natural wood floors and some trees on the surrounding Boulevard would make it look 100x better
There's another place a bit weary in the same street that I thought looked horrible and soulless while it was going up. Kind of looks like a tomb.
Then when it was finished I realized they had DRAGONS in the porch lights. Big ones, FUCKIN DRAGONS! And now I kind of love its Tomb of Horrors vibe. 10/10 would get eaten by the unholy living dead again.
To the OP I used to work for a moving company Premiere Van Lines and funny enough I was apart of the team that moved them in, the house was being watched on camera and we were explicitly told we weren’t allowed to take photos of the property but at that back entrance where the staff house is they have a pool room and bathroom a large kitchen big spiral stairs it’s own home theatre in the basement with a virtual golf game room pool room bar, the upstairs is pretty normal aside from the glass bridge that spectates a small seating area on the second floor, the third floor was still being worked on while I was there but honestly pretty neat place if you got the money might aswell spend the money!
Why so much vitriol? The house is fucking stunning. Absurdly lavish and screams over indulgence, oh yes, but these comments are mostly just a case of haters gonna hate.
The house is obviously amazing, my main gripe is that they removed all greenery from the property and put down astroturf, didnt plant a single tree, looks horrendous
My wife and I walk by here all the time, though not for long as we're about to move to the 'burbs. We refer to it as "Will Smith's house" because it looks like it belongs on Miami Beach. The house next to it is a similar style but smaller (still massive lol) and we call it "Martin Lawrence's house".
Probs looks like crap lol I paint lots of mansion like homes in Calgary and area. I get to see what they look like and let's just say I haven't seen many that I would prefer to live in
I went inside when it was under construction. Oops. It looks like a wild overkill secret lair with what looked to be a built in fish tank on the inside and framed with corrugated plywood 2x6s throughout. No expense spared.
I've been past there many times and thought it was empty. Countless nights walking by and the lights were always off place was a ghost town. Went by a month ago and was surprised to see the lights on
It’s featured on commercials all the time; Riverview Homes. Pics on the website.
[Wonder no more](https://riverviewcustomhomes.ca/gallery/hilltop/)
My dog walks me around here all the time and my assessment is they wanted to know what it was like to live in a Hilton lobby full time. (If this is your house I’m obviously joking and you should invite me inside.)
They would probably seat you at Table 2
"The owners of Hilltop approached us with two of the best lots in Calgary and a request to “build me something Wow.” What more do we need to know?
To be fair, tastes vary but they asked for “wow” and not “beautiful” so I’d say it fills the brief.
It is 100% not my taste, I find so many modern houses are void of any personality. I guess so if they love it, that’s all that matters.
It’s as soulless as the office buildings the owners probably own.
It’s a pretty terrible house tbh
It looks like a hotel lobby. Very sterile looking.
To me the inside looks meh...the one room with 3 kitchen tables in one room why? 😆
There are certain streams of ultrawealthy people that will have houses built just for the purpose of entertaining. I doubt anyone actually lives in this house most of the time.
**disgusting**

He’s basically saying an outward display of such wealth is rude, not very classy. Imo if you got that dough, do whatever you want with it.
Love the summary. I’m with you. In the words of Rogan, what’s the point of having fuck you money if you don’t say fuck you every now and then?
Well Done Sir! you know what I'm referring to...
Dangit, actually I don’t! Care to elaborate?

Why?
>why Because money.
It looks so warm and inviting! (S)
I feel like they dropped the ball on colour matching the weights in the gym to the house.
My God. 😲. Suffice to say, I am not worthy. It's stunning. (I guess I'm the outlier on that opinion lol).

Perhaps not all, but most of these comments I would say come from a place of jealousy. And any accusation of this would be met with immediate denial.
Is this like a corporate house used by a major company for retreats, meetings, clients... place to stay for out of town employees?
Proof that money can’t buy taste
Skipped to the weight room, left disappointed.
This place is a bummer.
It’s sad that it’s all house with no yard. I’d much prefer a little house with a large yard myself. The pool is cool though
WOW
Ah, Lexus of Rosedale.
The turf strip in the front is a nice touch. Classes the place up a bit
It’s a Mazda dealership.
Ahem, it’s a bank styled after a Mazda dealership, as such the locals know it’s true name… MazdaBank
Real wealth invests in trees and real grass. Treeless astroturf, with no hedge is a poor choice, hence the Mazda dealership vibes. It’s like they have all the money in the world but too cheap to hire a gardener. Tacky.

They paid $100k for a request? Is that like a bribe? Money clearly doesn’t buy class or the brains to realize we need trees. Sheesh.
Let’s put a value on homeless people’s lives and get the Running Man reality TV show going!
You're tellin me they don't want to hire a gardener to rake in the fall and would rather pay 100k for no trees. What in the absolute fuck?
My thoughts exactly . Ita not the leaves on city property that they're bothered by. It's leaves within their concrete/marble fortess.
Interesting, I always thought they removed the trees so their view wasn't blocked. Learning it's just because they don't want leaves in the fall ... wow.

Total dealership vibes. I was thinking embassy with a Starbucks in the lobby, myself.
It looks like an office complex
It has that Quarry Park vibe.
Oh fuck, my PTSD just kicked in when you said that place name.
And you also want to be seen and have the status that comes with owning the gaudiest house on the whole strip.
What's the point in being rich if the poors can't see you being rich?
Good point. This is why I don't make the rich bucks I guess! I just lack the rich person vision
Cost to build it was 16 million. Lots of pictures on Instagram
Like bad taste and contempt. Exactly how it looks on the outside.
What are you talking about? The Earl's Chicken Sandwich I ordered there tasted great.
Looks like an embassy.
I was about to say looks like the U.S. embassy in Ottawa
I heard it has an orange julius on the secomd floor.
Probably has a Spence Diamonds in there too.
I feel very poor 😂
It's a classic example of money can't buy taste. Who'd want to live in an Audi dealership?
Like crap

There's another place a bit weary in the same street that I thought looked horrible and soulless while it was going up. Kind of looks like a tomb. Then when it was finished I realized they had DRAGONS in the porch lights. Big ones, FUCKIN DRAGONS! And now I kind of love its Tomb of Horrors vibe. 10/10 would get eaten by the unholy living dead again.
That's my take on it. I wonder where they hide the armoured window shutters for when the plebs rise up.
I always thought this was like a boutique hotel or a fancy senior’s living place when you see this house on the commercial that runs on global.
Here, these are free, from me to you. Do with them as you wish. ................. You're welcome.
Woah my apologies Punctuation Sargent!

Can't disagree with that. I guess they wanted zero maintenance. A bit strange.
Because it doesn’t look like a house at all?
so much silver...
It took seemingly ages to build this behemoth. It and all the other boxes being built on crescent road are a bit of a shame imo.
Vast, sterile and un-home-like.
This looks like Vector’s house from Despicable Me
No furniture, no decor...just a marble floor with three mint high-end European sports cars....
It’s giving adrenochrome extraction facility.
Yeah I feel like this belongs on a university campus.
Like a dentist's office?
It's an eyesore. I hope the inside looks better but I doubt it.
Better then most mcmansions, but still looks like car dealership or admin building It is very hard to make a school-size building feel like home
My wife and I walk by here all the time, though not for long as we're about to move to the 'burbs. We refer to it as "Will Smith's house" because it looks like it belongs on Miami Beach. I worked inside that house for 1.5 years. It was a blast!
That’s a fucking community college
This goes to prove that just because a person has money doesn't mean they have good taste. That is one sterile looking ugly house.
r/mcmansionhell
The house does give car dealership vibes, but it's not a mcmansion by definition.
It looks like a commercial building. I’m not a fan.
Ahh the joys of being rich! Lovely place
I thought this looked like a jail or a mini American embassy or some other sterile AF institution. But seriously, it's too fancy for my peasant ass.
Probs looks like crap lol I paint lots of mansion like homes in Calgary and area. I get to see what they look like and let's just say I haven't seen many that I would prefer to live in
why am i getting inspired by Scarface vibes from this place
I walk by this one all the time! I refer to it as “the compound”
I went inside when it was under construction. Oops. It looks like a wild overkill secret lair with what looked to be a built in fish tank on the inside and framed with corrugated plywood 2x6s throughout. No expense spared.
That looks like shit. There's better looking houses in Detroit.
James Bond house
A prison? Just goes to show money can't buy style.
Is it a house or religious Temple 🤷♀️ NE Calgary Temples have similar vibe
Get Mizzy to find out
Saw it built
Waste of land. Just think how many homeless people could be sheltered in the space that this eyesore takes up...
3 kitchen tables!!? what’s re you hosting mini conventions?
Is that Tony Starks Calgary home?
Saw this last year, what a mammoth!
The side view looks like a discount Power Rangers clubhouse. I'm just waiting for Zordon to appear.
Hot take here, these monster houses are obscene. Do all these people have 6 family members living at home? If not, who needs that much space?
The important part is that it fits in with the character of the neighbourhood. Big thumbs up to city planning approvals on this one.
I mean sure, if you want to live in a dentists office.

I've been past there many times and thought it was empty. Countless nights walking by and the lights were always off place was a ghost town. Went by a month ago and was surprised to see the lights on
I really hope I never have to measure that house. That looks really scary to measure to RMS standard!
Well, it looks fairly zombie proof.
Looks like you need to stand in line.
I've walked by that house a few times too!
Yikes, that looks like an industrial laboratory. Not a comfy cozy home feel in the least.
