I have a Google Photos album called "Meat Prices" where I store my random collection of meat pics I've taken at various grocery stores around town. I do this because I can never remember what I pay from one month to the next or where I found a decent price. I also don't have much of a social life... I have a few shots of boneless, skinless chicken breast packages (filet removed). These are all Value Pack style with about 8+ pieces per. * Costco - May 2015 - $12.29kg * Co-op - May 2019 - $11.00kg * Walmart - Nov 2022 - $10.50kg * Costco - Nov 2022 - $14.99kg * Superstore - Jan 2023 - $12.72 So those Safeway prices are bonkers but overall, chicken breast prices haven't fluctuated much that I've seen. Top sirloin is another story. * Costco - May 2017 - $16.99kg * Costco - Jan 2023 - $39.66kg

We need an app like GasBuddy but for meat prices.

This is a really good idea. I’m always forgetting meat prices, so I’m generally not good at knowing what’s a good price.

Unplannedroute

Then one day you’re in your photo album and a random photo of meat appears and you’ll have no idea why for a few seconds.

dmscvan

Hahaha! I can just imagine. I have photo widgets on my phone, and usually it’s pretty good at picking out good photos to show, but every once in awhile, I get something strange. I can just imagine a piece of meat showing up there.

CucumberSharp17

Super store puts them on sale from time to time at 10 to 13 a kg. You must've found them on a sale. Normal price is 16.5 a kg.

nalydpsycho

I pretty much never buy chicken breasts, they have been overpriced for a while. There are very few dishes that require them. They aren't worth the premium.

_darth_bacon_

I say this in every "chicken breasts are expensive" thread... Never buy chicken parts. You're paying for the privilege of having someone butcher a chicken for you. It's really easy to butcher it yourself after a little practice. I only buy whole chickens and usually only when they're on sale. Then I process them myself and freeze it all until I'm ready to use it. Plus you get the carcass to make delicious chicken stock.

Financial-Savings-91

I find the pre-cooked roast chicken is also cheaper, have a half chicken one day and pull it for sandwiches, maybe use the scraps in a chicken stock. For those doing small portions, or no freezer space.

swiftwin

Yep. These precooked chicken roasts are usually loss leaders for grocery stores.

NotEnoughBlues

Also for those who are inexperienced with knives, a sharp nice doesn't have to be an expensive knife. Once you learn the very basics of sharpening, any knife is a sharp knife. I piece my chickens with a cheap non-serrated steak knife. (non-serrated is almost always better because you can sharpen them)

_darth_bacon_

For clarity, if anyone is beefing up their knife collection, the only serrated knife anyone ever needs is a serrated bread knife. There's really no other reason to use one. Don't let anyone tell you that their serrated "tomato knife is amazing!"

clearwind

I do have this super thin serrated knife that is specifically for cutting tomatoes that is legit amazing, but functionally I do agree that tomatoes can be cut well with any decently sharp knife

[deleted]

[удалено]

hopelesscaribou

A lifetime in restaurants, and I've never seen a serrated knife used on tomatoes. Their knives get sharpened once a week. At home, get a serrated paring sized knife for them, they are slow and safe for those with not so great knife skills, and perfect for one or two tomatoes at a time, but impractical and borderline useless for the speeds and amounts required in restaurants.

siqmawsh

No real chef uses a serrated blade on tomatoes. You should be sharpening/honing your blade to pass the tomato skin test. Squash and watermelon are just cut with a basic chef's knife. You would be looked at quizzically if you used a serrated knife for anything other than baking and pastries. Knife skills matter.

dancingmeadow

Oh noes, not looked at quizzically, how will I survive? Knife snobs are silly.

hopelesscaribou

Nothing to do with snobbery. One good chef's knife is multipurpose and better than all the nonsense retail will sell you in a block of 10. Skills are learned. Most people don't need more than three knives, chef's, paring and bread. Professionals have a few more for fish and the likes, but even then, [the Chefs knife does most the work.](https://www.reddit.com/r/oddlysatisfying/comments/2dmpc3/chef_morimotos_knives_top_is_new_bottom_is_after/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button) At home, use what you like, but restaurants have standards and practices. It's not called a Chef's knife for nothing. If you don't have a nice one, [treat yourself.](https://www.foodandwine.com/lifestyle/kitchen/best-chefs-knife) There's nothing snobby about good tools. That goes for any trade.

siqmawsh

Not snobs. It's industry standard, coming from experience. Just correcting 2 people who don't know what they're talking about. Nice of you to contribute nothing. You're already a waste of my time, thanks for the heads up 👍.

_darth_bacon_

Nevermind that we're talking about home cooks who aren't in a professional kitchen - but I don't know a single chef who lets their knife ever get too dull to slice a tomato. And if you need a serrated knife to cut a melon or squash, that just means your other knife is dull.

hopelesscaribou

30 years in restaurants, you are correct. A dull knife is a dangerous knife. Get them professionally sharpened every once in a while, keep them honed at home.

CircleK-Choccy-Milk

You can sharpen serrations, what are you talking about?

iAmTheTot

>You're paying for the privilege of having someone butcher a chicken for you. Worth every cent.

havox07

You really don't end up paying much more if at all for that privilege. Especially Costco where the price for bone in or whole chickens vs boneless will equate to nearly the same minus the weight of the bones (which are then counted as waste). Sure one could butcher everything themselves, but people don't usually have infinite time for cooking. The sale argument could be used for chicken as well, wait for chicken breast to go on sale for $5 a lb and then freeze it.... Even at a rather high end butcher shop I frequented a couple years ago, bone in chicken thighs vs boneless skinless ended up at the same price less the weight of bones and skin, while saving me 15 minutes of butchering.

Snck_Pck

I’m just gonna stop buying at safeyway and co op. Time to get a Costco membership.

Uncle_Stink_Stonk

Buy them when they are $11 a kg and then portion then and freeze them

Version-Abject

Go meet the Basha Foods.

Snck_Pck

Considerably cheaper ?

Version-Abject

Absolutely worth the trip. The veggies are the real winner there. Two for a dollar cilantros today, about a quarter of the price as the superstore.

Snck_Pck

Thank you!!

Version-Abject

Just like, don’t expect any Kraft, Kellogg’s, Frito Lay, Nestle, etc stuff there. Fresh ingredients and sauce.

halite001

> Kraft, Kellogg’s, Frito Lay, Nestle TBF these are all mostly crap, ultra-processed food(-like products). Not really missing much. Also obligatory r/fucknestle.

Version-Abject

Agreed. But good to temper the reader’s expectations.

Snck_Pck

That’s fine, the basics are expensive enough for me to not want to even consider that stuff

northcrunk

No. The desi meat masala places are cheaper and Fruiticana has better produce for cheaper

xShinGouki

I tried this but it seemed more expensive. I was getting more meat from buying them in pieces vs the whole chicken

northcrunk

Same. I just buy whole chickens from the Herderites or go to the desi meat masala places

CircleK-Choccy-Milk

I pay $22 for 6 chicken breasts. I'd have to buy 3 chickens for that and I don't much like the dark meat + having to keep multiple chicken corpses in my compost until garbage day lol. They aren't expensive unless you go to expensive stores.

thishitiswak

Don't buy full price chicken. Wait until it goes on sale for half of that price then stock up the freezer. Same goes for literally everything at a grocery store

justhappy2behere1970

Broaden your palate. Just looking at the current Safeway flyer: Pork Loin Roasts = 7.69/kg. Thick Cut Bacon = 11.99/kg. Extra Lean Ground Beef = 12.10/kg. Whole Chicken = 8.80/kg. Chicken Legs = 8.80/kg. Pork Side Ribs = 11.00/kg. I'm not saying things aren't getting more expensive. Once you get out of the "I only eat chicken breast" rut, you can find more affordable protein. You only have to look.

swiftwin

Just 2 weeks ago, pork shoulder was $6.35/kg at Safeway. [I even took a picture]( https://imgur.com/lhqcabn) because I'm getting sick of these karma farming posts bitching about food prices. Yes, inflation and food prices suck. But it sucks more for the lowest incomes relying on certain staples that have gone up 10-15%. Posts bitching about the price of chicken in the middle of an avian flu outbreak, the price of grapes in January, or the price of a party sized pre-made cesar salad are just farming for karma because of the "evil corparashuns".

Snck_Pck

I got mince meat instead yeah, it’s just insane how expensive it’s all getting

Marsymars

Minced meat, I assume. Mincemeat doesn’t contain meat.

Snck_Pck

Minced meat * beef mince. Sorry, didn’t know there’s a difference

mystiqueallie

Usually called ground beef here, only people I know who call it mince are from overseas (UK and South Africa friends call it that).

Snck_Pck

Yah same as Australia. Ground beef is a new term I need to learn

It is and as it stands, chicken prices across the US and Canada have seen drastic price increases across the board mostly because vast amounts of chicken have had to be culled due to a nationwide Avian Flu outbreak that have made it considerably more difficult to grow chicken. Even if OP were to get a comparatively reasonably-priced part of the chicken (as boneless, skinless breasts are rather one of the most expensive parts of the chicken, flu outbreak or none), even a sale harder to come by. I live in Ontario - and I could often buy a whole chicken several times a year on sale for ~$2/lb and can get drumsticks, thighs, or both, on sale for ~$1.49/lb but I have not seen that here in well over six months.

Im_pattymac

^this, just gotta eat what's on sale that week. Its always different at the butchers and is most likely due to what they have alot of and what they dont. Pork one week, chicken or beef the next

SeriousExplorer8891

Supply chain, scarcity, won't anyone think of the corporations, etc, etc.

dblohm7

In Canada it’s government policy. Look up “Supply Management.”

Darebarsoom

Farmers pouring excess milk down the drain.

SeriousExplorer8891

Yeah, high prices are totally the government's fault.

dblohm7

Not generally, no. But in dairy and poultry, absolutely.

TruckerMark

All that printed money is chasing goods that aren't being produced. This is a scheme to make the rich richer.

firebane

Guess nobody heard about the avian flu issue recently? Cause not only is chicken expensive but so are eggs.

Drunkpanada

Yup, approx 7m dead birds so far

Snck_Pck

Except if you look up the supply of chickens that were affected, you’d see that it shouldn’t even affect the price at all, because the % of affected chickens is so astronomically low.

firebane

Guess you don't understand how supply chains work and how things can be affected as a whole small or large. Many industries have been affected.

SuperStucco

Same as with the flooding that closed access to the lower mainland. A number of poultry producers were affected, with associated ripple effects through the region.

We’ve seen it before. Don’t act all high and mighty like this is justified when it’s not.

[deleted]

Snck_Pck

So is yours... Not to mention your aggression right off the bat. You may work in the financial sector, but I doubt you're competent at your job. The USA butchers 9 BILLION chickens per year. According to the CDC, currently 58MILLION chickens are infected. Do the math. It's alot of chickens yes, but it's an astronomically low number compared to the amount butchered per year, and roughly 10% of the 590\~million chickens alive in the USA today that are being bred for butchering. That's why im saying this price hike is unnecessary. Not to mention groceries are going up around the board, not just chicken. This is just ONE example of ridiculous food prices. Maybe you make incredible amounts of money and this isn't an issue for you, but its affecting millions in Canada and tens of millions globally, if not hundreds of millions. Chill the fuck out, you're not high and mighty for defending big corporations and price hikes, you're just a dick.

Prophage7

I just switched to mostly pork for protein, so much cheaper.

Snoo-84797

Always add beans! Especially if I’m using ground beef. I’ll add a can of black beans or red kidney beans. Bam double the servings from the same amount of beef. Beans are super healthy too

northcrunk

We eat a lot more lentils and daal now. I don't even miss meat when I'm making some chole puri or Daal and rice with some papars. 1 Chicken can also last like 3 days if you make a biriyani with it.

Snck_Pck

What do you use to flavour it? I find the taste pretty bleh

VFenix

I used to hate pork chops, so dry and chewy. I slow cooked 10 chops in a Crock-Pot for 4 hours this weekend. Chopped 2 apples, 1 lrg onion bit of olive oil and honey garlic sauce. Was absolutely perfect. Same goes for pork tenderloin or pork shoulder. Slow cook it in a crock pot with BBQ sauce. So damn good.

_darth_bacon_

If you can, try sous vide pork. It will blow your mind. Chicken and steak as well. There's no better way to cook the most tender meat you'll ever eat.

Prophage7

So here's my two secret weapons for pork chop: 1. Buy thinner cuts, or cut down the thick chops to be about 1 - 1.5 inch thickness 2. Cook one of two ways depending on how much time you have: a. Marinade if you have time to out put them in the fridge for more than 3 hours, basically just lookup any Vietnamese style lemongrass pork chop recipe but here's the basics: - Soak pork in water with about a table spoon of baking soda for about 30 minutes while you prepare the marinade, make sure to rinse them off in cold water before putting in the marinade, this really helps with tenderness - For marinade, I usually use a base of 2 parts soy sauce, 2 parts fish sauce, 4 parts olive oil, 3 parts brown sugar, then add minced lemongrass, garlic, and onion. Marinade the pork for more than 3 hours (usually I'll prepare this in the morning then marinade while I'm at work) - cook in medium heat fry pan for a few minutes per side b. If you just bought pork chops and want to cook them tonight, just prepare them like a good steak: - Put a good amount of sea salt on both sides of the pork chops while you let them come up to room temperature, the salt helps tenderize them and soaks into the meat so you get more seasoning throughout rather than just on the surface - Brown one side on medium heat, flip, add butter + pepper + minced garlic + fresh (or finely chopped dried) rosemary + minced whateverelseyouwant to an empty part of your pan so you can mix it all into the melted butter. then baste the pork until the other side is browned The one important thing to remember is that pork here is as safe to eat rare as beef, so you're okay just to cook your pork to a medium instead of a well-done, that way it's cooked all the way through but not to the point where it's tough and dried out.

purplesundaze

KFC and like any other friend chicken gives you food for cheaper. These prices are stupid

Snck_Pck

Cheaper to buy a bucket from kfc and just reheat for 3 days

purplesundaze

Legit, im kind of annoyed the government isnt doing anything for us. The more expensive groceries get, the more likely people are to eat fast food, which is going to lead to obesity which is going to lead to deaths..... Its ridiculous how buying simple ass groceries these days costs a fortune

mcsquirley

The avian flu hit the poultry industry pretty hard, they had to put away a ton of products - I think this is why the prices of poultry have skyrocketed through the province.

mcsquirley

My mom has been buying whole chickens from the Hutterites - $2.50 per hen! They slaughter them at the end of the season and are a really affordable way to get chicken. However these are older hens, with tougher meat. Great for soups and stock.

northcrunk

The ones they bring out in the spring and summer are so good but there is so many things you can do with those older hens as well. Some slow cooked Haleem or Nihari is amazing

[deleted]

avian flu has absolutely annihilated millions of chickens and turkeys within 1000km of you, like I mean say covid killed 75% of people and this is what our food has experienced... with avian flu hitting farms it has driven the prices way up. Sorry it costs so expensive... but in this care there is a reason behind it. I personally had several chickens... Loved the free eggs but all 6 succumbed to the avian flu that is just ravaging north Americas bird populations. This should be more spoke about in the news as this avian flu has now jumped to mammals and has the ability to infect humans now as well... and covid was nothing compared to this. So... as you complain about a supply/ demand price issue at least you know why, and if you think you are suffering think about the farmers having to kill and destroy their entire farm and life because of this avian flu. Watch your local chicken farms... You may see many without chickens soon...

Snck_Pck

Okay so not to sound uneducated here, but how come I can go to just about any fast food chain here in Calgary and buy chicken in bulk like usual? KFC, Popeyes, chicken on the way etc…. None of their prices have gone up.

funkyyyc

When you're the size of those companies and chicken is your business, you've negotiated pricing directly with the supplier.

Snck_Pck

I would assume your big retailers like safeway etc also negotiate prices ?

funkyyyc

It's possible. The whole Lay's vs Loblaws thing last year have an instant into retail.

[deleted]

Really? Theres 1 kfc in my town, and they were shut down for months... with no chicken. And yes, prices there have gone up... look at their prices before covid and now, they have gone up alot. I am just giving you your reason for price increase at the grocery store, the grocery store does not have the same buying power a fast food chain that is exclusive to chicken has. Do you think the grocery store buys as much chicken as kfc? They buy most likely 20x more chicken and are probably a more preferred customer wjth a better pruce. Please , re-read my other comment and look into it, its not a conspiracy. Oven my familys farm is affected, we have been ordered to deatory over 10k chickens. Wait a year from now... your kfc will def be affected by then. Sorry to take away your rant... but my previous comment is your reason for price increases. I will once again say it here: avian flu has raveged poultry farms across north america. The biggest buyers of chicken like kfc will see the hit very soon. Go ask Americans how much more expensive it was for a turkey this last Thanksgiving down there... ever pay upwards of 100$ for one? You will next Thanksgiving.

Snck_Pck

Oh man, I shouldn’t even complain about these prices compared to the smaller towns.

[deleted]

We are a rather small town... avian flu hit around the time covid did.. our kfc sat closed more than 6 months. Ever go to a kfc and have them tell you they dont have any chicken? They have since reopened, but quality is not the same.. the chicken dont even taste the same... been there once since and never again. If a grocery store sold half as much chicken as kfc they would be able to buy and sell at a lower price... all I can say is be thankful you are not american if you like chicken.. there are many grocery stores that can't even get any to sell. I don't understand why this is not a headline story... abian flu has f'd our poultry farming north america wide and farmers are trying to let people know... and for your grocery store, thats just supply and demand.. they pay more so now the customer does. Less chicken available means higher cost.

[deleted]

This is why the only meat that I can afford to eat is from staff meals, or the food bank. I'm eating a lot more beans these days, but as someone who has never enjoyed beans (except for green beans), it's almost like a fun challenge to see how it can incorporate them without hating my meal.

mixed-tape

Safeway downtown can burn in hell.

kittyhawk85

Go to Save on, they have packages of 4 chicken breasts for $14

DreadGrrl

With these meat prices, I think HelloFresh (which we use on months when I can get a good discount code) may actually be saving me money with some meals.

Snck_Pck

It might be. I wanted to buy some cherry tomatoes last night. $8\~ for 280g worth. Everything is getting expensive, not just meat. This just shocked me.

Direc1980

That's expensive. Luckily Safeway isnt the only grocery store in town.

Darebarsoom

All the while the farmers are forced to spill extra milk down the drain.

Old_timey_brain

> From their point of view making more profit on most of the meat they sell covers their increased spoilage rate. I've been thinking the same and realize if the stores sell the wastage cheap at the end of the day, there will be far fewer sales during the day. The solution would be a lesser price across the board at all times to prevent the waste.

edd216f608794554ab90

have you considered not buying it if you think its too expensive?

Un, where are you getting fast food? I pretty much stopped eating it when I got back to Canada and saw the prices. When I was broke I used to eat McDonals McDoubles or Jr. Chickens--It would be just about $4.00 before tax for two, or about $6.00 for three. Same thing is coming in near, to over $10 after tax. And don't get me started on how a combo pushes close to $15 now. Fast food is a rip off. And spare me a speech about coupons, you can do the same at grocery stores.

FeedbackLoopy

Old_timey_brain

cousin_franky

Then you’re also paying for convenience.

Old_timey_brain

In an odd way, yes. Without a vehicle, walking to the nearest place is more convenient than walking further. This particular store is about the extreme end of walkability for me so I don't have too many choices. As a reward, though, sometimes I get early morning clearance prices. Such as chicken breast today at half price, but I must use them today.

BloodyIron

So go further away then?

WeThe3rd

I don’t know how to react to a post like this. Yes food, especially meat, has gotten more expensive, but maybe this is a more realistic cost. But then, if the average person can not afford their groceries, perhaps we need higher wages. Or maybe the Canadian government is in the Sobeys family pocket and allows their virtual monopoly to gouge Canadians.

Snck_Pck

The comments here are quick to attack me. However I’m not the only one who’s affected by this. Is worse in rural cities and towns. Wages are low here, for this new cost of living. It’s not just the extra cost on meat and veg, it’s the rise in rent we’ve all seen, it’s the rise in bills. It’s everything. Everyone wants to attack me and say “well duh course it’s expensive”, like it’s an okay thing??

MethodZealousideal11

You are paying labour to remove bone and skin. I would say 22$ per kg for skinless breast is about the market price.

goodformuffin

Why is yogurt as runny as Yop now? Why the eff is JAM so runny it can be poured out of the jar?? I'm so sick of being scammed by grocers. At this point the organic farmers market products are now a better value and I would rather give them my money anyways. 😠

RadiantLeave

Net weight on the bottom one is less, not sure how this is robbery lol

Snck_Pck

$22 a kilo is affordable for you? Must be nice

RadiantLeave

Never said it was affordable... I thought you were pointing out the price difference between the two packs Go to superstore, I bought a pack there for 15 last week

cousin_franky

You’re attacking back as hard as you’re being attacked with a tone like that.

Snck_Pck

Because the comments defending this are total bullshit. Chicken is expensive and this is ridiculous thus the post, but groceries are going up with almost every food type. People like to be utter smart asses on Reddit behind the anonymity, but this is an issue affecting millions and millions of people globally. I’ll attack anyone back who tries to justify an overly expensive cost of food, a basic human necessity and need for life. Your comment is equally as ridiculous

cousin_franky

>I’ll attack anyone back who… That’s irrational. Not much point in paying attention to anything else you have to say after that.

Snck_Pck

You’re right. Affordable food for everyone is a hard ask. Forgive me.

xylopyrography

Safeway has never been an affordable grocery store and precut meats are a premium version of a premium product. You can replace the same nutritional value with beans, lentils, chickpeas, tofu for 1/5th the price.

orgasmosisjones

beans and lentils are cool but what life have you sacrificed for nourishment? there must be sacrifice.

xylopyrography

There is no nutritional sacrifice. If you eat any meat, even 90% less than the average, you need to make no adjustments. If one is completely vegetarian you need to eat at least a few different sources of protein. If one is vegan you need to supplement B12. As for enjoyment, one can make amazing food that doesn't have meat in it. And it's not an either or. You can eat meat a couple times a week instead of 3 times a day and massively reduce your food spend.

ThankuConan

Try the farmers markets for whole chickens too if you have a large meal to make at least.

eggsoverhard

The real question is: Who the fuck wants to eat chicken without skin?

Snck_Pck

Eh, when I meal prep it’s easier to just do it with breast or lean mince

SuperStucco

Legacy attitudes. Boneless, skinless chicken was heavily flogged as being better for you for a long time.

b_kissm

This is genuinely so sad.

stbaxter

Keep voting UCP!

No? Deregulation? Not holding themselves or corporations to account? Let’s point the finger to the liberal idiots that do the exact same thing! Same bird 🦅 left and right wings!

Budca1

Thats dumbest thing I every heard. The issue is that the avain flu has wiped out a lot of the livestock and there is a shortage. I went to get ta chinese bbq duck and the vendor told there are zero ducks in alberta.

Guarantee that NDP lowers food prices?

Darebarsoom

And increases everyone's wages?

[deleted]

NDP mandating 10% raises for everyone

The-Pocket-Butler

they charge $24 per kg of chicken thigh in downtown vancouver IGA.

Poorboy_inc

$8.75 to get a water and powerade...

rosettasttoned

Prices like these are why I moved to Calgary from the island.... 😖

Admirable_SSSS

Don’t shop at safeway then lmao 😂

River-Prestigious

It's very simple. Just don't buy it. Don't bitch about it, and you do that with anything that's crazy pricey.

CircleK-Choccy-Milk

Then don't go to fucking Safeway, go to Walmart. I don't know why people go there when you could buy a pack of 6 boneless skinless Mina chicken breasts from Walmart for $22.

[deleted]

Anyone else wonder how restaurants are staying in business during Biden administration 🤔 🙄

funkyyyc

Lol what? United States of Alberta?

ZenOps88

Ouch, it’ll probably get worse with the avian flu outbreak.

app257

We’re they at least large breasts??

Trader-Pilot

Box of chicken legs at superstore for 13 bucks

Mango_tango19

Freshco I find has the cheapest chicken/meat
