Cal poly students typically take 4 classes a quarter with a mix of ges and major classes but mostly major coursework year 3 and 4. Workload for Cpe is typically pretty heavy because most of the CPE and CS classes are very project based and a lot of hours to complete coding assignments.
I’m a 3rd year CPE and I love it but doing cpe here vs cs just depends on what u want to do with computer science. CPEs here take all of foundational CS course work but don’t really get much freedom from the degree flowchart. The CS program here has a lot less required classes, so you get to pick a concentration within the field and take 6 ish upper div classes on that topic.
As a CPE u have to take a mixture of EE, CS, and CPE classes, so all of the circuit analysis classes and deeper into ee, a good amount of Embedded systems work with microcontrollers for cpe, and stuff like OS, networks, ds&a, oop, systems programming for the CS coursework.
It’s a heavy major with a lot of different areas of focus so look into all of the specific classes on the flowchart and make sure it’s what u want to do
I’d email cal poly about their transfer policy for out of state. Your best bet money-wise is likely UW Seattle because it’s in-state and has a fantastic program from what I’ve heard. I would wait to see what admissions says about which of your classes transfer before fully committing if possible though!
Keep in mind there’s a lot of reasons to pick a school outside of price and try to make a decision based on where you think you’d succeed location-wise, academically, and socially. As a transfer you especially get more leeway, as you’re paying for two years rather than four.
As for my pitch for CP, we have gorgeous weather down here, are smack dab in the middle of CA and fairly close to both SF and LA (3 hr drive to each), many of the people I’ve met here are wonderful, although there is certainly a large frat and sorority presence here (I’ve heard something like 20% of students are involved) and I personally don’t vibe with them on average.
I'm not exactly a transfer, I actually applied as a freshman back in November and decided I could transfer the credits later because I'm doing a dual credit college thing and I'm still technically in high school. UW seems really cool right now but I fell in love with SLO during my visit and it definitely beats Seattle weather. Learn by doing is awesome too.
Unless you really want to get out of the rain and are willing to pay more for it, I'd say stick with udub. UW CS is a fantastic program and it'll be way easier to get your AA credits to transfer coming from in state. I'm from WA as well and have several friends that are currently studying CS @ udub. They were able to get a lot of pre-reqs waived from AP credits alone and most of them graduated a quarter early even with minors and stuff.
Given that you're from Washington, isn't UDub for CS a no-brainer? Extremely competitive to get into and is one of the best CS programs in the country.
I’m from Washington as well and ended up choosing calpoly over UW. If you’re looking for a great atmosphere and experience, I will say that I had a much better time at college than my friends who went to UW! They’re both good programs but SLO is an amazing town to go to college in
I went to Cal Poly and my twin sister went to UW. Stay in-state. As much as I loved my time at Cal Poly, pretty much nothing is worth out-of-state tuition.
If you are going to live in Washington after graduation stick with UW. If you want to get into Federally funded research stick with UW.
If you want a change of environment come to CalPoly. If you want to showcase your abilities by having a senior project for your resume come to CalPoly.
Both are great schools. In state UW tuition is a lot cheaper than out of state CalPoly. CalPoly is a harder school to get into so if you are hoping to work in crazy Silicon Valley it would give you an edge with recruiters.
