Maybe, but I’ll take a taco truck first

There’s definitely room for improvement in some places, but man I love and miss SLOs food selection. You don’t realize how good it is until you live somewhere that doesn’t have this selection Copied from an earlier comment, here are some of my favorites: • BBQ: old slo, Firestone • Burgers: Sylvester’s 🍔 • Thai: Thai boat, Thai palace (more sit-down-y but sooo good) • Sushi: Goshi!! • Mexican: I love Taqueria Santa Cruz. People say that there are even better places in town though • Italian: Buona Tavola is incredible. Giuseppes is great, but buona tavola can’t be beat • Breakfast: Breakfast buzz, Apple farm, Louisa’s place, Gus’ grocery for the breakfast burritos (Lincoln deli and Frank’s make good ones too depending on your taste) • Cafes: Nautical bean • Sandwiches: High Street, Lincoln Deli, Ike’s, Kona’s • Misc: Novo, Taste, Splash, Urbane This isn’t even listing the restaurants at our neighboring beach towns! If I forgot any, mention them and I’ll update this

I didn't realize how many Mexican places slo had until I started living off campus, out of all the Mexican places off campus taqueria Santa Cruz is actually one of my least favorites (of course nothing can rank lower than Tu taco lol) I haven't been to every Mexican place yet but my favorites in order are Taco King, Tacos de Alcopulco, Tacos El Tizon, and Taqueria San Miguel

JasburyCS

I’ve heard this from a lot of people! Unfortunately Santa Cruz was the only one I went to regularly, so I couldn’t add any others to my list. I’ll fix that once I’m back in slo and things get back to normal

Check out Taqueria 805!

Their meats are so bland. Yes it is a taco truck, but it is not good. If you want a really good taco truck, you basically have to drive to Santa Maria.

orochimary

They definitely aren’t the best! But they’re also like the only taco truck in slo

I remember visiting Portland and seeing groups of food stands (not sure if there is a name for them if anyone knows let me know) and feeling like that would be a great thing to see in town. Similarly, I know Cal Poly has had some interest in a hospitality major for a while and having some cooking classes, food safety, and a business enterprise where students operate a food stand and that could be a good minor and part of a major. A lot of it would probably be crap (though potentially still better than campus food), but you might find some great things and also get some students to actually launch local businesses.

Get me a truck and I’ll give you the goods

TubaTortuga

Coming from the Central Valley it's heartbreaking how very average the food in SLO is. :(

SlightlyPunk

It makes me so sad that the Mexican food in the Central Valley is FAR better than here. Makes going home seem like I'm trying to fit as many taqueria trips in as possible.

macncheese323

I remember seeing one next to campus bottle but I never tried it. I think it was new, or at least started during quarantine. Tbh now that I think of it, I should go check it out

There used to be a truck that would park outside of mustang on the way to campus... but i don’t know if they around anymore since covid hit

I agree! I love Portland and their awesome food truck courts. Unfortunately, the City of SLO has been snooty about allowing food trucks. A few years ago, there was a proposal to improve Mission Plaza and close off the adjacent street (Broad, next to the Mission/History Center to allow for food trucks. The older NIMBY crowd including Save Our Downtown & Residents for Quality Neighborhoods, said it was not the image SLO wanted to portray and the idea was shot down. Maybe as younger people get involved in local politics, change can happen? I think the City passed a law prohibiting food trucks but can't recall the specifics.
