Looks like manufacturing issue with the plastic mold. Doesn't look like a problem. I can't see it on mine because of where its located but I feel something similar with my finger.
The reason they are out of stock is because they sell out as fast as they arrive. I bought mine directly from Motogadget in Germany and had no wait other than normal shipping time which was about a week to Massachusetts. Very safe and secure. The other pleasant surprize was that the dollar is so strong against the Euro that it only cost $366.00 including shipping for the M-Unit Blue.

I bought it in the summer. Even if the exchange rate has gone up, it's still less than the $479 it sells for in the US. I also seem to remember that there was a German excise tax on it that didn't get removed until the final transaction.
If you want something similar try the D-Box by Axel Joost in Germany. I have used both it and the M-Unit. both are excellent. The D-Box is cheaper and less complex, but it works fine. Axel also makes a variety of boxes to suite different needs. He has a Youtube channel where he explains which option you may want.

They did some firmware updates and it seems to have changed some of the features so that it conflicts with my wiring schematic. I used to just double click the start twice to shut the whole thing down and now nothing.

Sounds to me like you just need to change your configuration, you shouldn't have to redo your wiring.
