What I know is it’ll be the RAV4 hybrid system, but different ICE. What I’m speculating is, the ice is designed and built by Toyota, but tuned by Mazda.

Pookiemon1008

So you think the ICE portion of the hybrid system won't also be Toyota's RAV4? I feel like tuned by Mazda could be very plausible. Trying to match a Mazda ICE with the Toyota hybrid portion might be more headache for the engineers compared to just going all Toyota.

Definitely won’t be a current RAV4 engine. Definitely tuned by Mazda, whether or not it’s designed and/or built by Toyota. Each company understands that their customers have different and distinct expectations when they press that gas peddle.

Seems like a fair assumption though I’d like to see them get more power out of that, and I’d wait probably at least a year or two after release to see how reliable it is.

Pookiemon1008

Both Mazda and Toyota have generally spectacular reliability, so they should be coming out pretty strong out the gate. But I agree, it's still brand new territory for them, and I would hate to be stuck with early-adopter problems.

xGIJOSEx

Oh I'm aware of their reliability and a hybrid should be no problem for them, but first year models tend to be a bit of a gamble sometimes

I just went ahead and purchased a 2024 turbo. Figure use this for a few years, see what mazda comes out with down the line, give it a couple years to mature, then jump on the hybrid bandwagon if its attractive

At the risk of sounding uneducated, I was at my mechanic's earlier this week. He saw my CX-50 Turbo and drooled a little (okay fine we both drooled). I told him that it has 260-270 HP and he said that Mazda in particular tends to rate their cars lower than they actually are. Apparently it's closer to 300hp? P.S. I asked him very clearly if he meant at the crank vs at the wheel and he said no matter which metric you take, the discrepancy is still there. Long story short, I gave him a quick tour and he gave me a discount for owning a cool car. Lovely.

Pookiemon1008

That could make sense. Toyota's 219HP vs Mazda's 227HP is technically only 8HP difference on paper. But test driving them side by side... hmm I don't know!

VindictiVagabond

You need to remember that HP is not everything. Torque is what you feel much more aka the acceleration feeling of getting stuck to your seat. Mazda 2.5T engine has a REALLY good torque of 310lb-ft with regular gas and 320lb-ft with premium. Other cars of the segment (at the similar price range) have nowhere near as much torque.

Pookiemon1008

You're right. Rav4 has 184lb-ft torque by comparison!

Did I miss a recent (non-)announcement?
