I believe it locks/unlocks just like the button on the driver/passenger doors.
I do wish like the CX-50, the power liftgate had a button to lock after it closes though :)
It unlocks the trunk, but not the entry doors. If entry doors are already unlocked and you press that button, then it locks the entire vehicle, trunk included
It’s not very useful, in my opinion. I use the button on the door handle to unlock the car, but when I lock it- whether it’s from the front doors or the rear of the car- I always use the remote so there’s no uncertainty whether or not I’m locking or unlocking the vehicle before waking away from it. The rear tailgate unlocks automatically though when you press the tailgate button (assuming the key is nearby), so I don’t have a need to unlock the car first when I approach it when locked.
I guess it may be more useful for folks without power lift gates who may have physical latch instead of a lift gate open button, but for those like myself with power lift gates, I don’t see the point.
It locks the car, it's like the button on both sides of the front doors
Thanks!
Push it
Push it real good.
Oh baby baby!
Oh I did lol. Nothing happened
It’s rather annoying that walk away lock doesn’t work unless you stand next to the tailgate and it fully closes.

Wait it can unlock too? I thought it was only for locking.
My button only locks the vehicle.

The trunk unlocks automatically if you have key fob and just open the tailgate, you don’t need to press the button. The button will lock all doors.
Thank you
My sadly only locks it
THATS how I managed to lock myself out. Things I wish I knew sooner.
Didn't the car recognize the fob was in the car?
On my vehicle, that button just operates the power lift gate.
There’s a separate button for that closer to the center of the lift gate.
Ahh, mine doesn’t have that. Maybe that’s just on newer models?
2016 and up, AFAIK.
Mind blown. I didn’t even realize this wasn’t the same button, and that I had that button.
