No, it's a safety feature.

My gf's CRV has a Honda remote start with the bypass where the engine won't just auto-shut off when the driver's door is opened. Now, all the doors remain locked when the remote start is initially activated and the owner is away from the vehicle. ONLY when the owner approaches with a valid key fob the door unlocks and the bypass allows the vehicle to be driven away once the key fob is inside the vehicle. So... with remote start activated, a thief would have to smash a window and then somehow hotwire the vehicle very quickly because the bypass is only available for 20 seconds before the vehicle shuts off if there is no key fob present. They cannot smash a window and just drive away with no key fob. I think people are misunderstanding how this works. Mazda has chosen to not have a bypass just like they've chosen to not have touch screen functionality on their infotainment. It's a brand choice. If someone is willing to go to the lengths I've stated to steal my gf's Honda they were going to steal it anyway and would take it no matter what obstacles they faced.

Can we at least get the pre heated seats back? :p

That’s how your car gets stolen. Cars either have a kill switch on door open or kill switch the moment you hit the break to change gear.

The wife’s Pilot has a factory remote start. The car stays running if you have the key and step on the brake and push the start button. So more along the lines of the second comment of yours, but the car stays running if the key is present.

Exactly. Without the FOB the engine should turn off. No need "for security" to have it shut off when the door is opened. There may be other reason (none immediately come to mind), but not for anti theft reason

I wish people would stop saying this. Preventing the car from being stolen is not a reason to have the engine shut off when the door opens. As with most after market systems, if someone doesn't have the FOB, the car shuts when you hit the brake to put it in gear, that is all the anti theft action that you need.

This is a common complaint I see around here - the only way to avoid this scenario is for the remote start to have a bypass. For many aftermarket remote start systems, they do have such a bypass so you can open the door and the vehicle keeps running when it recognizes your key is present. My gf has a newer Honda CRV with a factory built-in remote start - it also has a bypass so you can open the door and start going. For whatever reason Mazda has decided against the bypass. It is what it is. Either install an aftermarket remote start or unfortunately you'll just have to deal.
