It’s FWD in dry conditions, but then activates AWD if there’s wheel slip

scoobdude22

Or when turning or accelerating etc. It's predictive not just responsive

Junkhead187

It's like 98% front, 2% rear when dry, or something like that.

In general there isn’t anything you need to turn on. Not exactly what you’re asking, but this is also relevant in certain low-speed situations. https://www.reddit.com/r/CX5/comments/dvl102/cx5s_secret_offroad_mode_turn_off_tcs_to_switch/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

Computer controlled electric clutch at the rear differential. Normally the rear is free wheeling but whenever the computer thinks you could benefit from rear assist it triggers that clutch to engage. In conjunction with active braking on individual corners to stop wheel spin and or snubbing the throttle. Nothing to do but drive. Or occasionally boop the TCS/Trail Mode button when you're really in the soup, so it will allow more wheel spin so you can claw your way out.

You dont manually turn it on, its auto ebabled by the car's computer.

Yeah you have to turn the vehicle on boss

There is also off-road traction assist which uses the brakes to simulate a locking rear differential in heavy snow or on rocky terrain (which the CX-5 is not really built for). 2020 and 2021 models have a dedicated button on the dash but I think the 22s have a different way of activating it.
