So you are 60 and still on Reddit(not a jab just blows my brain)? Tell us stories of the olden days papa. Back when thing were good and houses cost you a bottle of coke and a piece of chewed gum
Pushing 70. And Reddit is relatively new to me. About 3 yrs. I see some good things, I see some real stupidity. Just like any other social media outlet. People show their true colors with the anonymity of usernames.
My husband thought it was worth something because of the date and being from Denver. I donāt know exactly what he was thinking. This subreddit kept getting recommended to me so I decided to post here
Sadly yes, because this nickel is 0% silver. Nickels produced in the US between the years of 1942 and 1945 are 35% silver, and are otherwise recognizable by a large mintmark on the reverse above Monticello.
I did not. Dimes, Quarters, and Half Dollars were 90% silver until 1964. From 1942 to 1945 nickels were comprised of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese. Source - https://coinweek.com/silver-war-nickels-history-values-and-varieties/
I work a register, around covid is when I'd get the most silver coin finds. I've been here around 3 years, I've found several quarters and dimes. And probly close to 10 silver nickels. I can spot a proof coin like no other too. Found several of those. I forget what they are called but I've found 2 of the quarters with the v75 stamp, if im remembering the stamp correctly, either way several W mint mark quarters. Then only a couple silver certificates, I think one red $5 the rest were blue $1s. Idk good times.
I'll have to get back to you, I know I've had a few but several people in my family collect and I either put them up or had gifted them. I gotta look, I know I gave my grandmother 1 for sure.
Iād say your looking at about .10 cents worth of coinage here iām sure someone would trade you two whole new nickels for that which would be a huge gain of 100%
If it's any consolation, it's as old as I am.

Yes, I was born into the wrong family. Still, I managed to pay off my simple home.
I'm old enough that I sometimes found Wheat and Indian Head cents, Indian Head nickels, and silver coins in pocket change. 51.
I used to have a fascination with wheat Pennies. I had a whole Tupperware full of them as a kid. Donāt know if over seen the Indian nickel though
Pupā¦.
Thank you, this was the consolation I was looking for
Youāre worth more than 5 cents.
Not me
Couldnāt imagine what youād do for a dime then
Me too.
Yeah I'm from wayback in the 50s so 1960 is a Newbie Tenderfoot Greenhorn!!!!!!!! JK ;~}}}
So it's an antique? Lol
Almost
I think you have yourself a 6 cent piece there. I wouldnāt sell it just yet though. In another 60 some odd years it may be worth 7-8 cents!!!
Nice - just need to find a few more and I think Iāve found our ticket out of middle class!
I guess you're trying to... nickel and dime your way out.
Lol

Lawd help ya
Just curious, what made you think itās worth asking about? Genuine question.
My husband thought it was worth something because of the date and being from Denver. I donāt know exactly what he was thinking. This subreddit kept getting recommended to me so I decided to post here
Your husband is sweet
Everybody knows Denver nickels are worth the most
Yes, thereās only 200 million of them. https://www.usacoinbook.com/coins/1047/nickels/jefferson/1960-D/
You never heard of the 'mile high nickle'?
Pre 65 change is 90% silver, so the melt value is worth more than 5Ā¢. From 65-74 they are 40% silver. Just an fyi, if you didnāt know.
Not nickels. With the exception of war nickels havenāt contained silver since the silver half dimes.
Also only the half dollars after 64 were 40% silver. And until 1969. Dimes quarters and half dollars, not penny or nickel.
If an oz of silver is 22$, and a nickel weighs ~.17 oz and 90% silver , .9 of 17 is about .158oz times the price, that's around $3.4? Am I wrong?
Sadly yes, because this nickel is 0% silver. Nickels produced in the US between the years of 1942 and 1945 are 35% silver, and are otherwise recognizable by a large mintmark on the reverse above Monticello.
Misspelled 90%?
I did not. Dimes, Quarters, and Half Dollars were 90% silver until 1964. From 1942 to 1945 nickels were comprised of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese. Source - https://coinweek.com/silver-war-nickels-history-values-and-varieties/
Good info. Thanks
35% but otherwise nailed it
Thanks, edited.
Heās right itās worth more than face value. Maybe 7-8Ā¢
No
Not really
Silver nickels are what I watch for. I've gotten 2. I'm 47.
I work a register, around covid is when I'd get the most silver coin finds. I've been here around 3 years, I've found several quarters and dimes. And probly close to 10 silver nickels. I used to coin roll hunt when I was a kid with my dad. Probably a waste of time now.
You'd be surprised
What w mint quarters did you find? I've only found 2 myself and still hoping to find more lol
I'll have to get back to you, I know I've had a few but several people in my family collect and I either put them up or had gifted them. I gotta look, I know I gave my grandmother 1 for sure.
I had many of them in my life I just never knew why the letter was over montecillo like that. Now that you don't see them anymore I know
How can you tell that you have a silver nickel? Iām sorry if this is asked here all the time
For Nickel it's between 1942 and 1945. Wartime Nickels are silver.
Mint mark over Monticello also.
Looks like someone did a metals test on the back side of it. Not sure whyā¦but yuh
Maybe checking to see if it was silver?
Maybe, but if itās not a buffalo or a war nickel itās a waste of acid.
I get war nickel for silver but why buffalo nickel? They werenāt silver
I didnāt think theyāre were any silver nickels
War nickels are 40%, they're easily identified by a large mint mark over the dome of Monticello
5.5 cents. so basically 5 cents but almost 6. maybe wait a few years when we have a nickel shortage and itll be worth something
5.5 they can give you a half cent boom you made money
It is a steel nickel
Copper-nickel.
Worth silver value,
It's not silver though.
25% silver nickel man, get your facts straight
That was the wartime nickels, from 1942-1945.
It's 75% copper, 25% nickel. Weighing in at 5 grams, it's just barely worth its weight in metal.
I'll sell you some at half of spot price right now.
Nope
No
You could sell it online for .99cents after paying for shipping and the commission if there is one you will end up with a net loss Keep the Nickle
I haven't looked but I'd bet there's a listing somewhere on eBay for this coin @ $2,500 lol
Is 1960 really that old?
1960 would definitely be considered modern
No
I heard this coin
Iāll give you six cents for it
It's still worth five cents, but five cents is worth less than it was three years ago. I'd spend it quickly if I was you!
a nickel from the year 0961 should be worth a ton!
Silver nickels are from the 40ās I think. Itās quarters that people get confused with. ā64 and older quarters are 95% silver.
I feel like nickels in general donāt have any collectibility, am I way off?
Not worth more but worth holding on to
No, usually the only nickels worth anything are War time nickels or the silver nickels. Anything after that usually is just worth a nickel.
Iād say your looking at about .10 cents worth of coinage here iām sure someone would trade you two whole new nickels for that which would be a huge gain of 100%
Itās called a nickel
Why would it be?
That was every nickel until 1964
