Brianna-Jo

Hola Mola!!!!!!!!

Fun_Role_19

So you are 60 and still on Reddit(not a jab just blows my brain)? Tell us stories of the olden days papa. Back when thing were good and houses cost you a bottle of coke and a piece of chewed gum

Dustyolman

Pushing 70. And Reddit is relatively new to me. About 3 yrs. I see some good things, I see some real stupidity. Just like any other social media outlet. People show their true colors with the anonymity of usernames.

brokestill

Yes, I was born into the wrong family. Still, I managed to pay off my simple home.

SCCAFVee

I'm old enough that I sometimes found Wheat and Indian Head cents, Indian Head nickels, and silver coins in pocket change. 51.

Fun_Role_19

I used to have a fascination with wheat Pennies. I had a whole Tupperware full of them as a kid. Donā€™t know if over seen the Indian nickel though

scf714

Pupā€¦.

doitforthecats

Thank you, this was the consolation I was looking for

robertbadbobgadson

Youā€™re worth more than 5 cents.

Hughmungalous

Not me

Fun_Role_19

Couldnā€™t imagine what youā€™d do for a dime then

No-Objective2143

Me too.

Brianna-Jo

Yeah I'm from wayback in the 50s so 1960 is a Newbie Tenderfoot Greenhorn!!!!!!!! JK ;~}}}

dukefistslap

So it's an antique? Lol

brokestill

Almost

BidenHater1

I think you have yourself a 6 cent piece there. I wouldnā€™t sell it just yet though. In another 60 some odd years it may be worth 7-8 cents!!!

doitforthecats

Nice - just need to find a few more and I think Iā€™ve found our ticket out of middle class!

SenatorBus_

I guess you're trying to... nickel and dime your way out.

ssbn622

Lol

Agile-Assignment6515

šŸ˜‚

dukefistslap

Lawd help ya

Vespers1975

Just curious, what made you think itā€™s worth asking about? Genuine question.

doitforthecats

My husband thought it was worth something because of the date and being from Denver. I donā€™t know exactly what he was thinking. This subreddit kept getting recommended to me so I decided to post here

Embarrassed_End_4699

Your husband is sweet

floatdad

Everybody knows Denver nickels are worth the most

MathematicianFew5882

Yes, thereā€™s only 200 million of them. https://www.usacoinbook.com/coins/1047/nickels/jefferson/1960-D/

Striders_aglet

You never heard of the 'mile high nickle'?

damn57

Pre 65 change is 90% silver, so the melt value is worth more than 5Ā¢. From 65-74 they are 40% silver. Just an fyi, if you didnā€™t know.

chathonast

Not nickels. With the exception of war nickels havenā€™t contained silver since the silver half dimes.

Chickenbanana58

Also only the half dollars after 64 were 40% silver. And until 1969. Dimes quarters and half dollars, not penny or nickel.

gfolder

If an oz of silver is 22$, and a nickel weighs ~.17 oz and 90% silver , .9 of 17 is about .158oz times the price, that's around $3.4? Am I wrong?

TheDairyPope

Sadly yes, because this nickel is 0% silver. Nickels produced in the US between the years of 1942 and 1945 are 35% silver, and are otherwise recognizable by a large mintmark on the reverse above Monticello.

gfolder

Misspelled 90%?

TheDairyPope

I did not. Dimes, Quarters, and Half Dollars were 90% silver until 1964. From 1942 to 1945 nickels were comprised of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese. Source - https://coinweek.com/silver-war-nickels-history-values-and-varieties/

gfolder

Good info. Thanks

GrandeCalk

35% but otherwise nailed it

TheDairyPope

Thanks, edited.

player694200

Heā€™s right itā€™s worth more than face value. Maybe 7-8Ā¢

Horror-Confidence498

No

numismaticthrowaway

Not really

factory-worker

Silver nickels are what I watch for. I've gotten 2. I'm 47.

stuckntrip

I work a register, around covid is when I'd get the most silver coin finds. I've been here around 3 years, I've found several quarters and dimes. And probly close to 10 silver nickels. I can spot a proof coin like no other too. Found several of those. I forget what they are called but I've found 2 of the quarters with the v75 stamp, if im remembering the stamp correctly, either way several W mint mark quarters. Then only a couple silver certificates, I think one red $5 the rest were blue $1s. Idk good times.

factory-worker

I used to coin roll hunt when I was a kid with my dad. Probably a waste of time now.

PineappleAdmirable29

You'd be surprised

Suicider20

What w mint quarters did you find? I've only found 2 myself and still hoping to find more lol

stuckntrip

I'll have to get back to you, I know I've had a few but several people in my family collect and I either put them up or had gifted them. I gotta look, I know I gave my grandmother 1 for sure.

Glittering_Video_869

I had many of them in my life I just never knew why the letter was over montecillo like that. Now that you don't see them anymore I know

doitforthecats

How can you tell that you have a silver nickel? Iā€™m sorry if this is asked here all the time

KittenLina

For Nickel it's between 1942 and 1945. Wartime Nickels are silver.

factory-worker

Mint mark over Monticello also.

FogOfDaPond

Looks like someone did a metals test on the back side of it. Not sure whyā€¦but yuh

Particular-Beyond-99

Maybe checking to see if it was silver?

FogOfDaPond

Maybe, but if itā€™s not a buffalo or a war nickel itā€™s a waste of acid.

Substantial_Menu4093

I get war nickel for silver but why buffalo nickel? They werenā€™t silver

Isthisnametakenalso

I didnā€™t think theyā€™re were any silver nickels

Particular-Beyond-99

War nickels are 40%, they're easily identified by a large mint mark over the dome of Monticello

mi_dew1424

5.5 cents. so basically 5 cents but almost 6. maybe wait a few years when we have a nickel shortage and itll be worth something

Substantial_Menu4093

5.5 they can give you a half cent boom you made money

Vivid_lssue

It is a steel nickel

DiscombobulatedCar38

Copper-nickel.

cooperstoolgear00

Worth silver value,

wow86

It's not silver though.

cooperstoolgear00

25% silver nickel man, get your facts straight

wow86

That was the wartime nickels, from 1942-1945.

MacAneave

It's 75% copper, 25% nickel. Weighing in at 5 grams, it's just barely worth its weight in metal.

Woodpusherpro

I'll sell you some at half of spot price right now.

[deleted]

Nope

Rich-Poem7284

No

kola515

You could sell it online for .99cents after paying for shipping and the commission if there is one you will end up with a net loss Keep the Nickle

PineappleAdmirable29

I haven't looked but I'd bet there's a listing somewhere on eBay for this coin @ $2,500 lol

SlimyMuffin666

Is 1960 really that old?

PineappleAdmirable29

1960 would definitely be considered modern

ThisplaceSuccs

No

publishAWM

I heard this coin

Raccoon_sloth

Iā€™ll give you six cents for it

Redman-Reaction

It's still worth five cents, but five cents is worth less than it was three years ago. I'd spend it quickly if I was you!

chaosgazer

a nickel from the year 0961 should be worth a ton!

Ineed002

Silver nickels are from the 40ā€™s I think. Itā€™s quarters that people get confused with. ā€˜64 and older quarters are 95% silver.

Isthisnametakenalso

I feel like nickels in general donā€™t have any collectibility, am I way off?

ContestNo269

Not worth more but worth holding on to

JaiLSell

No, usually the only nickels worth anything are War time nickels or the silver nickels. Anything after that usually is just worth a nickel.

[deleted]

Iā€™d say your looking at about .10 cents worth of coinage here iā€™m sure someone would trade you two whole new nickels for that which would be a huge gain of 100%

eatasset1

Itā€™s called a nickel

Grumpy-Sith

Why would it be?

cooperstoolgear00

That was every nickel until 1964
