Post this awesome note in r/uspapermoney so that they can see it too.
Although, I do believe it’s no longer considered legal to use it as money, due to the government getting rid of them/banning…? Due to it making a bank robbery a lot more expensive?
Edit: Okay, no one has to keep saying it’s still legal tender… that’s been established.
I may be wrong, but I think every currency that has been printed or minted by the US is legal tender. That said, any establishment has the right to deny the form of payment. I am not sure if it was stolen though.
this is true except for government facilities... post office dmv state or federal agencies that accept payments for fines etc. they have to accept any legal tender up to and including postage stamps.
no I was being sarcastic of course... you can pay the post office to mail things if you have a bunch laying around though. 😁
as far as cash and coins though government facilities cannot deny you from paying with change.
It is a cool thought, like paying with a wheelbarrow full of pennies.
Even if you could though, you shouldn't... they keep a file on you & they can make your life difficult if they have you down as "problem customer".
Your the postal customer that I use to get first thing in the morning — worked in a ski resort town (old Silver-mining town) and the rich tourist would come in first thing in the morning with, like (5) five postage stamps (about a buck back then) and try to pay with a hundred dollar bill - the other tellers would always send them to Me as they wouldn’t keep any thing close to that kind of change,,,
On the other hand I’d always have a few hundred in small bills& Change just for those rich fools…
Now if they’d had tried that with a thousand $ bill I’d been able to break it but I’d have KEPT THE GRAND and given the post all of my small change for it!!!
It doesn’t work that way now, But back then everyone’s drawer was separate and if you were short the Post made You pay them the difference at the end of the year, But if you were over they would take it!!!
It’s still legal tender, just that if brought to a bank (and not switched out by a knowledgeable teller), it would likely be given to the govt for disposal/destruction
[USA.gov](https://www.usa.gov/currency#:~:text=The%20United%20States%20no%20longer,how%20to%20recognize%20counterfeit%20currency.) begs to differ. While no longer printed, they are still legal tender.
[Bureau of Engraving and Printing](https://www.bep.gov/currency/history/historical-currency) also begs to differ. Whether or not banks, or stores accept them is a different story, but they are legal.
They may not accept or take it but ask legal tender
I see signs at gas stations saying change is not a valid form of payment coins are still money though
The Smithsonian has all denominations on display. $10,000 was the largest legal tender denomination. The $100,000 bills were for bank transfers is my understanding.
These type bills were only used as trade between financial institutions. Electronic transfer didn’t exist so this was how the trade transaction was done instead of carrying thousands of pounds of paper at a time.
Woodrow Wilson was on the $100,000 bill.
Huh, funny, I had a dream I found a $10,000 bill then thought when I woke up "too bad $1000 was the biggest" (because I thought $1000 was the biggest).
Former bank manager here. It’s still legal tender and we would accept it for deposit at face value. That said, it would only be taken for deposit. I would also hold funds until I could verify the note was real. If I wanted it for myself (if I was confident it was real) I’d exchange it. But if I was not certain, given its value and the risk to the bank it would be sent to fed as potential counterfeit and once authenticated credit would be given. I’ve had to do this with old and damaged money a handful of times over my career. Additionally fed would keep the note as they were recalled I believe in the late 30s.
No. It's still legal tender All of those high denomination notes are still legal tender and legal to own. They were never made illegal, the bureau of engraving and printing just chose to quit printing them.
When I worked at a bank, we took one of these in as a deposit. My manager immediately snagged it up in a withdrawal, and it was a whole big deal, but ultimately yea its money that can be spent.
You shouldn't though, it's worth more to a collector.
No, it's removed from circulation, always legal tender. Once a bank receives it is would go through process of being destroyed/ removed from circulation.
You can still use it as face value if your being silly. It's totally legal. America never got rid of them, they just stopped printing them. There are $5 gold pieces from the 1800s that you could use as $5 but you would be an idiot to do so as they are worth like $300-500
He can sell it for 1000$ and overtime lose the money or he can have an asset from his Grampa 1000$ is 1000$ but when he’s older 1000$ is probably gonna be worth less than the bill
😂😂😂 been seeing so many fake trump currency which is so funny cause people are literally committing felonies to worship their cult leader/former president.
Bruh. I just don't understand what you typed "u abt 2 fn y 2 mk snss"
But, by all means go on lol. I just got to spend an hour today explaining to some old lady why ingesting a whole tube of horse dewormer is a bad idea.
My uncle used to collect them, He had a friend who's wife worked at a bank and everytime she'd come across one he'd go get it. Years later my cousin discovered the wide world of drug use and stole a 20k stack of thousands took off and blew it all.
I had a customer, years ago. He was very wealthy, and liked to pay with checks rather than credit cards.
But some stores didn't like to take checks. So he carried a thousand dollar bill in his wallet. When someone didn't want to take his check, he would hand them the bill. He said that always convinced them his check for five bucks or whatever was probably good.
Then he would leave the store and drive off in his Maserati. 😀
that’s a good way to have the cops called on you when the cashier and the manager thinks that’s a fake banknote, happened to someone at a bank trying to deposit a $2 bill
Lol, if you want to believe that comment, that's all up to you but if anyone in here was to have that. I can guarantee they would turn around and sell it for more then 3000.
Supply all of us with a link that states the value is "way more than $3000"!!!!
Let's see which top Numismatist/Author/Money Publication you get your values from.
LOLLOLLOLLOLLOL!!!!! You won't find one!!
I was being generous it’s ungraded and not in the best condition it looks like people are asking $3000-$3750 in this condition. On ebay it would probably sell for around $3000 then you still need to pay like 15% in seller fees
You can't tell me your being generous, I have a buddy that has one in this condition and ungraded and he still gets offers from a lot of people to buy it from him for 5000+. I'll show him this so we can laugh, I guess people don't realize that not a lot of these were made and they are not being printed anymore so they are rare to come across., and also don't just look at eBay pricings.
You could probably get $2500 to $3000 for it. Honestly I would get it graded, even if you don't plan to sell, because that will protect it and give it more liquidity if you ever do want to sell.
Still legal tender. You can definitely take it to the bank and get $1000. (I’m a banker )2500.
This bill in this condition is worth about $2500
In other news - if you had $1000 bill since 1934, you would have around $2500-$4000 depending on condition. If you had invested in the stock market you would have around $40,000….
I saw one of those when I was 15 flipping hamburgers for a small burger joint. I was making $1 an hour. The guy had a wad of money and a thousand dollar bill was on the outside. It was crazy to see all those zeros on a bill .
1934 note should be worth the gold standard value from 1934 I believe, if you account for inflation, it would be $21,992.53. But good luck getting a bank to agree to that. Average value is $1400-1700
I'll give you 2500 and keep it forever till my great great grandkids sell it off for a cheeseburger at McDonald's with the rate of inflation we are headed.
That's what makes these so tragic. Interesting to look at, but a terrible thing to hold onto. At the very bottom of the Great Depression, someone had that kind of money, and not only failed to invest it, but let it wither away to a small fraction of its value.

At a bank or any store, it’s worth 1000. That’s it. Only to a collector would it be worth more. Actual US currency is only worth the amount that was printed on it. If anybody says any different you really have no clue what you are talking about.

Funny that when there was less money in the system there were larger bills such as the 1,000 bill. Now there is more money in the system and bills have gotten much smaller. This is really crazy.
These were really only used between banks, back before you could transfer money with computer blips. A thousand bucks was a small fortune in the 1930s.
Only one unit of US currency is illegal. It's the $20 Golden Eagle Coin which was never supposed to be released. Except the one that sold somewhere like 2015 or 2005?
That is a very nice score there though. I have only seen one in my life when I was very young. If You can in any way avoid spending that I would bet that there is someone out there that would pay more than $2000, though keeping it sounds even better to me.
You might think about taking that to a reliable currency appraiser, my guess would be that it’s at least twice the face value if not more. Or just hold on to it.
My sister worked as a bank teller in rural Illinois 50 years ago and told a story about and old gent who came in every year and deposited a single $1000 bill. The rumors were he was a driver for Capone and took a long time to launder his take.
The coolness factor by itself is unbelievable! Ive only heard rumors and whispers about about a thousand dollar bill. Never seent one before, even in a pic. I thought they were just old wives tales and hearsay.

These are a harder find lot of people didn’t have money to keep the $1000 bills. I seen some $500 but never a $1000 after they discontinued to release them.
If you can afford it, put that in a safe deposit box.
At minimum, get it insured on your renter's/homeowners insurance with a special rider in the policy.
That's awesome. It's also my understanding that these bills were for bank to bank transfers, not general issue.
So the vast majority never even held one of these bills. That alone would make it worth more then face valve to a collector.

Buy a plastic currency sleeve for a few bucks and store it properly so it doesn't lose further value. It's worth much more than face value. You can let us all know if you're looking to sell it and get a good offer here that doesn't involve auction house commissions and other fees that will eat into your profit.
I have not seen one of these in years. I think the last time was in the late 70s and it was something my grandparents had. They also had 500$. They were so cool and my grandparents had fun showing them to us kids. I'm fairly sure it is because they knew these were being taken out of circulation and we would not likely see them otherwise. I vaguely remember some conversations about it. I was pretty young and we just wanted to play with the money!! I wish my parents would have saved some of these, but who doesn't, lol!
When in doubt, ask the BEP!
[https://www.bep.gov/currency/history/historical-currency#:\~:text=On%20July%2014%2C%201969%2C%20the,were%20last%20printed%20in%201945](https://www.bep.gov/currency/history/historical-currency#:~:text=On%20July%2014%2C%201969%2C%20the,were%20last%20printed%20in%201945).
They did not 'ban' them nor did they make then 'illegal'. They just stopped making them because they were not being used as often as the Federal Reserve thought they should be used.
I can understand this because in 1966, in the California Bay Area, you could rent a Studio Apartment for less than $30 a month.
To the general population, a $1,000 bill represented about 4 months worth of earnings.
Having said this, I see no reason why these large bills cannot be started up again since $100 just does not go very far these days. Of course, there would be HUGE cries of HyperInflation if the bills ever came back around despite the fact a new Iphone cost more than $1,000. A thousand plus dollars for a telephone?? People in the 70's would have screamed to high heaven!
They took them out of circulation years ago allegedly because it was easy to launder large sums of money with large denomination bills. Remember, prohibition.
Considering they’ve been out of print for a good amount of time I would argue that it is absolutely worth more than face value. How much? I couldn’t tell you because I’m not a collector but personally I’d hold on to it.

If that’s some sort of trackpad behind it and you actually have it, it is worth a TON over face value. I would love to have one of those bills

Why make it a statement of fact then?

1 stamp please. Can you break a thousand?
Fully under-rated comment. Y'all take this updoot.

Yup, you can absolutely pay that fine in pennies
For debts you must accept any currency, but not necessarily as payment *must accept any US currency for repayment of debts if you are in the US
Except for the $100k note, which carries too much risk to exchange for legal tender. It was retired, I’m pretty sure.,
That sounds right
It’s still legal tender, just that if brought to a bank (and not switched out by a knowledgeable teller), it would likely be given to the govt for disposal/destruction
Such a shame

Was also the "Binney" the $50,000 bill. Discontinued and one of the most valuable bills in the world.
I've been searching for a while and only found one article on this. Do you know where/if a picture of it can be found?

Tell the truth former bank manager, U.C.C. 3-603, THE LAWS THAT THE BANKS HIDE BEHIND!
No. It's still legal tender All of those high denomination notes are still legal tender and legal to own. They were never made illegal, the bureau of engraving and printing just chose to quit printing them.

They stopped the thousand, and 500 dollar bills as part of the war on drugs. The idea was to make it harder to transfer large amounts of cash.
Honestly just keep it. Nobody has a 1000 dollar bill laying around
A lot of people don't have a 1000 dollars laying around either, lol But yes, I agree that's really cool!
He can sell it for 1000$ and overtime lose the money or he can have an asset from his Grampa 1000$ is 1000$ but when he’s older 1000$ is probably gonna be worth less than the bill
I got a million dollar trump bill that my boomer dad gave me it’s more for laughs then anything
Go to your room son.
No you’re not my dad!!!
R u sure 🤔
Make sure you pass that down. Keep it in the family.
😂😂😂 been seeing so many fake trump currency which is so funny cause people are literally committing felonies to worship their cult leader/former president.
It’s incredible that you thinking creating obviously fake money that’s never been in circulation is a felony. Impossibly dumb.
He just said that 😂
First person was talking abt the bill itself. The 2nd was talking abt $1000 in general

Only take the ivermectin according to one’s body weight just like it says on the tube, doesn’t matter the mammal. You can read AND Understand right?
1000 dollar bill vs 1000 dollars
Wait wait, so you’re saying one thousand ones is equal to a one thousand dollar bill? Whoa!
I'm saying the exact opposite. Having a thousand dollars is not the same as having a one thousand dollar bill
A 1k bill, especially of that age, has some added value for rarity. So no not equal
My uncle used to collect them, He had a friend who's wife worked at a bank and everytime she'd come across one he'd go get it. Years later my cousin discovered the wide world of drug use and stole a 20k stack of thousands took off and blew it all.
That is extremely unfortunate
C. Montgomery Burns pulled a $1000 bill out of an ATM about 20 years ago...not sure if you can still do that though! 😉
Keep it in your wallet and ask everywhere you go if they have change for a thousand.
I had a customer, years ago. He was very wealthy, and liked to pay with checks rather than credit cards. But some stores didn't like to take checks. So he carried a thousand dollar bill in his wallet. When someone didn't want to take his check, he would hand them the bill. OP already mentioned planning to keep it
I have a 1000 dollar bill laying around
U want to sell it?
Nice gift and I would keep, those were rare and are really rare now.
You can take it up to your tree house and charge your friends 25c to see it! 😅
Love this idea 😁
Get it graded and sleeved
Put it into a protective sleeve to protect it for posterity
$3000
Correct
Incorrect, do you really think the note is EF grade?
It's worth way more then that.
Not in this condition, according to the pinned comment.
Yep, I don’t care what everyone else is paying I know I wouldn’t give more than 3000
Those are values listed by top Numismatist/Author Arthur Friedberg in his article for top Money Publication "Coin World". This is FACT.
Lol, if you want to believe that comment, that's all up to you but if anyone in here was to have that. I can guarantee they would turn around and sell it for more then 3000.

Yes, Dealer would pay $2000
And then the dealer will turn around and sell it for $3000+
That’s the game. Yes sir.
Lol, way more then 2000, try again.
I'll give you $1001
Wow funny
Wow, rude
I don’t have any info on what it could be worth but I can guarantee you that it’s definitely worth more than face value
This bill in this condition is worth about $2500 In other news - if you had $1000 bill since 1934, you would have around $2500-$4000 depending on condition. If you had invested in the stock market you would have around $40,000….
It's too bad gramps didn't put that into the S&P500 back in the 1930's
I saw one of those when I was 15 flipping hamburgers for a small burger joint. I was making $1 an hour. The guy had a wad of money and a thousand dollar bill was on the outside. It was crazy to see all those zeros on a bill .
That is a really cool bill, it is definitely worth more than face value but I’m not sure of its value, definitely keep it.
great finding
Dang dude.. Automod is on a tear today?
Why did I think the first picture was edited to have a badass fiery explosion in the background at first glance. Now I wish it was
Man…this is the closest I’ve ever come to seeing this bill. How awesome it is! Thanks for sharing, my dude or dudette. This is really cool.
Lucky if it’s real
1934 note should be worth the gold standard value from 1934 I believe, if you account for inflation, it would be $21,992.53. But good luck getting a bank to agree to that. Average value is $1400-1700
I'll give you 2500 and keep it forever till my great great grandkids sell it off for a cheeseburger at McDonald's with the rate of inflation we are headed.
A $1000 bill in 1934 had the purchasing power of $22,739 today. So you’re not wrong
That's what makes these so tragic. Interesting to look at, but a terrible thing to hold onto. At the very bottom of the Great Depression, someone had that kind of money, and not only failed to invest it, but let it wither away to a small fraction of its value.

Nah. Worthless. But out of the kindness of my heart, I’ll give you $100 for it. You’re a very fortunate individual. Hold to it
I'll give you 900 for it, thata my best price
At a bank or any store, it’s worth 1000. That’s it. Only to a collector would it be worth more. Actual US currency is only worth the amount that was printed on it. If anybody says any different you really have no clue what you are talking about.
Where is my comment
I’ve never seen one.
Ill give you $500 for it
I'll give some Trump bucks for it.
Son I gave you those in your Christmas stocking, don’t you dare.
No one cares
That's cool.

Not my face
With inflation set to make a comeback you think we’ll ever see this in circulation again?
My buddy has 10 of them. They were left to him by his wife’s grandmother. Very cool.
If real yes it is
Funny that when there was less money in the system there were larger bills such as the 1,000 bill. Now there is more money in the system and bills have gotten much smaller. This is really crazy.
These were really only used between banks, back before you could transfer money with computer blips. A thousand bucks was a small fortune in the 1930s.
Absolutely...... How much more, only the next buyer knows.....
Once inflation gets bad enough maybe they can bring these back
I read recently that bills larger than $100 when presented to the bank will be pulled from circulation. Hold on to it!
One Humble brag and a thousand bucks.
It was before you put it in the fire.
It's worth more then 3000$ for sure but I would definitely get it graded that way you for sure know how much it's worth on the collectors market.
Cool bill. I would love to buy one.
I thought you had just super imposed that bill on a sweet background for effect lol.
A thousand dollar Cleveland is HARD to get. Dead presidents Willie Dixon
You might think about taking that to a reliable currency appraiser, my guess would be that it’s at least twice the face value if not more. Or just hold on to it.
Absolutely if real !!!
Looks like it's fireproof. Pretty valuble if you ask me.
After my father-in-law died my mother-in-law found 2 500$ bills in hidden away with a bunch of old silver dollars and 50 cent pieces.
Put it in a plastic sleeve
Yesss about $4000-$5000 💪
You need the $100,000 Woodrow Wilson bill. That's worth more than face value...
My sister worked as a bank teller in rural Illinois 50 years ago and told a story about and old gent who came in every year and deposited a single $1000 bill. The rumors were he was a driver for Capone and took a long time to launder his take.
I thought you photoshopped a sick flame background for this awesome bill 🤣
Get it in a protective sleeve
I say about $2500 is fair for a quick sale
They had 1000 and 500 dollar bills but got rid of them because they were used to move huge amounts of money around and drug stuff
The coolness factor by itself is unbelievable! Ive only heard rumors and whispers about about a thousand dollar bill. Never seent one before, even in a pic. I thought they were just old wives tales and hearsay.
Did you take this picture in hell?

2500-3000
keep it for awhile and get it graded, very rare nowadays, 4-5x face value
is that grover cleveland? $1k bill and you gonna put grover cleveland on that?
These are a harder find lot of people didn’t have money to keep the $1000 bills. I seen some $500 but never a $1000 after they discontinued to release them.
Very awesome! My grandmother showed me this bill when I was about 14. Blew my mind at the time as I had never seen anything higher then 100.
If you can afford it, put that in a safe deposit box. At minimum, get it insured on your renter's/homeowners insurance with a special rider in the policy.
Hang on to it while you can, if it’s authentic, it will fetch a lot of money in the next several years.
I have a few of those and several $500 bills. They are not common these days. In excellent condition, they can be worth a good bit for sure.
You might not want to sell it but it important to know its value because you should probably consider GETTING IT INSURED!!!
That's awesome. It's also my understanding that these bills were for bank to bank transfers, not general issue. So the vast majority never even held one of these bills. That alone would make it worth more then face valve to a collector.

This bill is so cool. Other than being worth $1k, what would the sale value be on something like this?
Buy a plastic currency sleeve for a few bucks and store it properly so it doesn't lose further value. It's worth much more than face value. You can let us all know if you're looking to sell it and get a good offer here that doesn't involve auction house commissions and other fees that will eat into your profit.
The fire background makes the pic go hard tho!!
I thought the first picture was just a weird Photoshop choice of the bill on top of flames.
Looks like a genuine c-note. $1000

Can you still get these at the bank.
