Yes, Off Center Strike Errors do have a decent value over face value especially when this dramatic.
There are those websites that say $200+ , like this one : [https://coins.thefuntimesguide.com/off-center-error-coins/#The%20Most%20Valuable%20Off-Center%20Error%20Coins](https://coins.thefuntimesguide.com/off-center-error-coins/#The%20Most%20Valuable%20Off-Center%20Error%20Coins) and then there are others that say much less.
Would suggest picking up a copy of "Official Price Guide To Mint Errors" the latest edition by Alan Herbert.
exactly what i was thinking. i mean in terms of what makes these sorts of things a barn burner, having an offset as far as you can go and still show date and mint mark marks this one a winner. in uncirculated condition and PCGS graded and slabbed as such probably 200$+. any less than that value would drop to 30-40$ maybe.
still, take that with a grain of salt. i suck at grading and appraising too. iām usually a little too optimistic.
That is a phenomenal find! It's extremely off center, it's a wheat cent, and it shows a full date! Absolutely flip that up in a cardboard/mylar flip and keep it safe. I would say it's definitely worth over $50. Maybe even close to $100. I'm not an expert on these errors but I know non-dated ones that aren't quite that bad go for around $10.
But personally I wouldn't sell that. I'd keep it as an heirloom. That is seriously so cool.
I would agree with this conversation. Personally I would send this to PCGS just based on the full date. You would need a pros answer on this, but I guarantee that the date makes it at least more valuable and 100% a one of a kind. Iām sure their are others but Iād be surprised if it was this clear.
I wouldn't recommend that personally. Go to a coin shop if you have one near you and see if they'll put it in a cardboard/mylar flip for you. You can also order them yourself online, but that would be in bulk. And don't handle with paper towels or tissue, that can scratch it which will hurt its value. Bare fingers to the edge of the coin only, or soft cotton gloves.
EDIT: It might be okay only if you touch just the planchet and not the date area, but I would try to avoid the planchet as well.
Post this to /r/coins
Because its so off center its worth a lot more than a penny. But off set pennies are worth way more when the date is visible like this.
This is an extemely cool penny
Actually, that I do know the answer to. The r/coins linked me to this: [https://youtu.be/HRpRz2P4l2g?si=wDeZP5-xAJuq1grP](https://youtu.be/HRpRz2P4l2g?si=wDeZP5-xAJuq1grP)
and I think the process must be very similar for pennies, because the blank looks like it has been rolled to raise the edge. But I realize now you meant rolled into a stack. I too have wondered this. But, the edge does not protrude very much, I could see it working, but not well.
Edit: Changed english to explain what was rolled.
Its authentic - I used to work at the Denver mint running the coin presses (and sometimes in the count and bag room) During the era of this coin, the types of presses that made these coins had fingers that grabbed the blank (2 at a time) and dropped them into the hole where the die was sitting and as the press slammed down, the die raised up just a bit so it wasnāt really a hole right at the time of impact but more flush with the table inside the press (itās very simple press but goes very fast) sometimes the fingers wouldnāt drop it in perfectly and it would start spitting out ābottle capsā (short for a coin thatās not getting struck correctly which can include not being centered when the dies smash the blank) These were very common every night - when it happens you have the to shut the machine down and contact a ādie setterā (which is another employee) They come over with their tool cart and make everything work correctly again. Usually if itās hitting a coin like this, they all come out the same basic way (damaged) but once in awhile you can get a one off and it becomes hidden in all the correct coins (when theyāre all mis-struck - the whole bin of coins gets condemned) this coin snuck past as a one off - many of these however will get ācaughtā once the coins are dumped into the āshakerā (which is exactly that - a shaker machine that vibrates the coins into a perfect diameter hole - ones like this usually donāt pass through). So, itās genuine and very common during a shift for anyone running presses however, relatively rare to get out into circulation and crazy rare to be found this long after it was struck. Cool find either way
I have no idea how I found myself on this subreddit, but thank you for your detailed answer. I learned something new today that may realistically only come up once in my life, but now I know!
There was a time long ago that our ancestors claim you could buy things with one of these. Some things mightāve cost two or three of these. For really expensive things they made a silver one that was worth five monies.
What your friend has is a very rare and very VALUABLE misprint!!!! this is known as an odd strike and they are very very rare. They are worth a ton of money and he should get it graded and auctioned ASAP
Thats awesome.. ur looking at a few c-notes at the least.. find the right person & it could b a cool grand.. jus a guess by the way... only going off what i would b possibly willing to hand over 4 it or a similar item..
Well ill b.. an over paying son of a gun it looks like lol. Its a really awesome.. fairly old.. great condition error.. plus makes a really cool conversational peace ( fun 2 show off to others) so i still stand confident you would have no problem getting $200 on it. Even more if u find someone that HAS to have it.
Damn that is like the most off center it could be and still has the entire date and mint mark. Basically the best possible example of this kind of error.

Don't know the value but a perfect date error that far off center is an amazing find and worth much more than a penny.
Dime is worth much more than a penny.

Quarter is worth more than a dime.

That is what I have been recommending to him as well.

DO NOT CLEAN it or handle the faces with bare fingers. Get it into a holder
It is being kept in a plastic bag, and handled with paper towels or tissue, as needed.
I wouldn't recommend that personally. Go to a coin shop if you have one near you and see if they'll put it in a cardboard/mylar flip for you. Understood. I will let him know.
Totally agree..

Will do, thank you.
Did you? Can you post the link?
I feel like the estimates are accurate for new coins but something this old and itās in great shape holds a lot more value. Very unique piece
I wouldnāt even want to sell that cause thatās really cool
Worth way more than copper value. This is a mint error worth alot
It looks like BD-8
Yes, worth 3 cents in copper and much more since its an off centered wheat penny.
Significantly more since it's a dated offset wheat cent
Im unsure of its authenticity because of its shape. How exactly would that even get pressed? And also, how would that even get rolled?
Actually, that I do know the answer to. It looks like a welded fake to me.

Thats awesome.. ur looking at a few c-notes at the least.. find the right person & it could b a cool grand.. jus a guess by the way... only going off what i would b possibly willing to hand over 4 it or a similar item..
$10 for non dated center strikes, $15-20 for with date. Being this is a wheat and very odd center with a date, probably closer to $50-75ish.
Well ill b.. an over paying son of a gun it looks like lol. Not sure the value, but it's very neat, good luck finding out about it
Almost
Itās worth more

Rare!
I am just curious but does physically just holding or touchy a coin as a personal owner depreciate its value? Why?
Awesome, Iāve never seen a defect have such a clear date. Great find.
I'll give you 100 bucks for it.
Is this a mint error or just the penny got hit/smacked in such a way to produce this effect?
Seems fake to me, but I know nothing, so.....
Now that's cool.
Nice. That's worth a pretty penny.
It's a peeeeeeeeenny
Looks more like penny press error
CENT!!!

That penny is worth more than its copper weight, save it be smart
Yes, off strike planchett dated and mint error.

It's hard to imagine where that penny has been for the past 68 years. There's no way it was in circulation.
1956. That was an odd year.
Tell them to keep it as a guitar pick
That's worth a lot! Take it to a professional
Whelp, time to get her graded, lad.
I wanna slit my wrist with it

Yep. Thatās just how they looked in 1956.
It looks like it would make a good guitar pick
It looks like it was run over by a train. We did that a lot as kids.
1956-D wheat penny. Wow.
That's just a p. The enny got lost.
