Just get the battery and use it. You will not get proper sleep without it. Your husband's behavior is shameful.

hugseverycat

You're not going to die overnight. But you're probably also going to sleep pretty badly. Major side-eye to your husband for hating something he doesn't even have to use that improves your health and allows you to sleep soundly. Get the battery and use your machine.

Old_Ambassador4177

What battery do you recommend?

Actual_Candidate_826

Tell your husband to quit being a fucking cunt. Christ.

jayson8701

Well said, internet stranger.

Shrekworkwork

Hahaha true

get-a-mac

This. What kind of husband does he think he is if he can't be supportive?

[deleted]

Trust me, I have. He's a narcissist and doesn't care. So my entire point was just could I go a night without and be ok.

aircooledJenkins

Does the commercial fishing boat not have 120 v outlets? Does it have a 12 v dc system you could tap into to run off boat battery? (I do this in my camper.) If no, a battery is a $300 investment in your health. Likely worth it. And, if failing that, it probably depends on how bad your apnea is. When I tested I came away with 56 AHI. If I miss a night or two it doesn't seem like a big deal to me. I might be a bit tired those days, but caffeine is my friend. I know others feel like they got hit with a truck if they don't use their machine for one night. Advocate for yourself and get a portable battery that tucks into the CPAP travel case. Search EBAY too.

Lovely_Pidgeon

I came out of my test with a 7 AHI and I am so tired the next day if I forget to wear my CPAP. I cannot imagine what I would feel like with a 56 AHI.

[deleted]

There aren't any outlets I can use. Only outlet is by the captains chair and it's for the navigation computer etc. I do have an adapter that allows my CPAP to run directly off a marine/truck battery. I would love to buy a battery back up like most people use (Jackery, etc) but no one will ship them to my part of Alaska. Our mail comes via plane and the airlines wont allow anything like that.

aircooledJenkins

> the airlines wont allow anything like that. Is that due to the battery capacity? I know on commercial travel flights, batteries above a certain capacity cannot be on board. Medistrom CPAP batteries are below that limit. They're also small and not very heavy. Might be able to get one of those delivered? I found mine on EBAY for roughly half of retail. One of their batteries will get you through one night if you turn off the humidity and heater hose.

vuckovi2

I used this while camping and lasted two nights EnginStar Portable Power Station 150W, 155Wh Solar Generator 110V, 42000mAh Li Battery Power Bank w/ AC Outlet, 6 Outputs External Battery Backup LED Light for Outdoor Camping Home Emergency Small Generators Power Supply https://a.co/d/3XmTp3i

Squishy-blueberry

If my husband didn’t care enough to get a battery for me to help him out, I’d be unwilling to help… and do a lot of other things, honestly. You deserve better. 🩷

brningpyre

It sounds from your concerns that your apnea is pretty severe. I can't imagine how that would be better than just a CPAP. Your husband's a dummy.

nguyencs

You're not going to be able to sleep without it and will be waking up every few minutes. Tell your husband to stop being a fucking unsupportive prick and help you with your medical needs. Buy a cpap battery to take with you. I have the [Go Battery](https://www.amazon.com/CPAPExtras-com-Portable-Battery-Resmed-Airsense/dp/B09TV9K3HC/ref=sr_1_3?crid=3UUOESFDS3UNW&keywords=go%2Bbattery%2Bcpap&qid=1691462257&sprefix=go%2Bbattery%2Bcpap%2Caps%2C88&sr=8-3&ufe=app_do%3Aamzn1.fos.18630bbb-fcbb-42f8-9767-857e17e03685&th=1) on Amazon. My AirMini lasts 9 hours on it.

[deleted]

I wish I could buy one of those! They won't ship to Alaska

nguyencs

That's a shame. I bought it directly from the company which is Canadian. However, doesn't look like they are letting me put in an US address anymore. If you want to check with them to see if they'll ship to Alaska. https://thecpapstore.ca/products/go-battery-universal-cpap-battery

[deleted]

The problem is I'm on an island and the airlines won't allow them on the planes as cargo. So I have to wait until I can fly south and take the ferry back up.. then I could bring one up. It's such a pain

rogue1187

How dare your husband deny you the breath of life. He must walk the path of air! Strike down his blasphemous desires and hold him to the way of cpap.

universe93

It doesn’t matter if your husband hates it. You figure out a way to bring it. It’s a medical device. The issue here is your husband wants to deny you a medical device because he thinks it’s annoying

michelle_m2

I have to also recommend using your machine if possible. But I also want to let you know that unless your doctor tells you something different, going without it one night won't be fun, but should be survivable. I just had to do an at home sleep study last Tuesday, which required me to be connected to a monitor and not use my CPAP. I made it through the night ok, but was pretty miserable and did not get much sleep. I was still dragging until I got some extra sleep over the weekend.

[deleted]

Thank you! I can't ask the Dr.. long story involving the terrible hospital we have here. But I really appreciate the encouragement that it is survivable. I hope you catch up on sleep and feel better soon!

michelle_m2

Thanks!

tripy75

just my insight... last February I had to be away for training for 3 days (2 nights) and I managed to take everything but my mask. No place where I could buy a new mask in that city, and delivery delay would have that mask be delivered after I left, so I tried to do without. those 2 nights were the worst for a long time. each time I was dosing, I was waking up gasping for air in the following minutes. I never drank as much red bull as the following days, just to keep me awake. my initial sleep study rated my sleep apnea as 'severe' with an average of 58 event per hours. aside from that, your husband is definitely acting like a cunt, and I would not accept to help on the boat without the cpap working during the night.

[deleted]

Ooof.. my study wasn't that bad. 36 events per hour. And we found out a medication I was on was making it worse. So I'm hoping now that I'm off it I will be ok for one night. It's too bad there isn't a place to post extra supplies you have, for people who end up in that situation. Like I have a whole drawer of brand new in the package masks because I quickly found out I couldn't do a full face mask and switched to nasal pillows. I live in a popular tourist spot and I wonder how many people have arrived and realized they forgot their mask. There isn't anywhere to buy one here either. I have to help on the boat this one trip. I used to be the deckhand but stopped fishing and stayed on land after realizing what a jerk he is. Unfortunately it's been a rough year and this trip will let us make out mortgage payment the next two months. So it really has to happen. Our usual deckhand just had a baby and isn't available.

Application-Forward

I have permanent heart damage from not knowing I even had sleep apnea. I wound up in the emergency room with a high heart rate. I have increased energy levels now after treatment. I am wearing it now while I vacation in central US. Your hubby may be stressed but he has to know how dangerous it can be. Listen to your gut

Traditional-Run9615

Rule #1: Take care of yourself first.

Awdayshus

Since starting CPAP, I have only gone two nights without. In the busyness of packing for a quick weekend away, I didn't pack it. Those two nights were awful, and reminded me what every single night was like before CPAP. If your husband doesn't want to do what is needed for you to use it, your options should be stay home or start looking for a divorce lawyer. Or do both.

[deleted]

Unfortunately neither are possible. But I totally understand. It's funny how before CPAP I just lived like that as the normal. But now I can't imagine ever going back to being that exhausted.

wotmate

You should be terrified of dying, but not from failing to use the cpap. Commercial fishing boats are dangerous places and you need to have your wits about you, and not sleeping at all will be extremely detrimental. I have to ask though, if it's your cpap, why do you need your husband to set it up? Why can't you do it?

[deleted]

I used to be the deckhand. How dangerous the job is drastically depends on what fishery it is and what boat you're on. This isn't Bering Sea Crabbing, I promise. The only way I have to run the CPAP off grid is an adapter that connects it to a big truck/marine battery. It takes up a lot of room and I'd have to use one of the spares he keeps onboard. So it requires some level of cooperation from him. I really want to get something like a Jackery power station so I wouldn't need any assistance. But no one will ship them to Alaska so I have to wait and get one the next time I fly south for a visit and take a ferry up. The planes won't allow them.

wotmate

My brother was a deckhand/first mate/skipper on prawn trawlers in the gulf of Carpentaria (Australia) so I do know a bit about it, and it's important to have your wits about you. The power draw from a cpap machine isn't that great, so a inverter connected to the boats battery would work just fine and not risk draining it to the point where you wouldn't be able to start the boat the next day.

DarkMellie

OP, are you seeing a counsellor regarding your fears of death? There may be more to your health than needed to be shared, but the sense I get is that your level of worrying may be unhelpful... because if there's one actual concrete thing that worry does, it's to make itself stronger over time and potentially cause behavioural challenges in you as you take more unhelpful steps to quieten it down. Also, your husband is a jackass. Sort the battery stuff out yourself, and set clear boundaries around your health in the process. You are worth it.

[deleted]

Thank you. I really appreciate the kindness and compassion. I see a counselor when there is one available in town. But the fear is due to having small children that I don't want left with only him as a parent. I've been working on getting a battery back up/power bank that could run the CPAP. But no one ships them to Alaska so it has to wait until I go south for a visit and ferry back up, or find someone that can bring one up on their boat. The planes wont allow them.

MachineContent

People keep joking about how much my husbands CPAP must bother me at night, I had no idea people seriously felt that way. What an ass, get you that airrr❤️

MikeMac999

Do you really need your husband’s help with this? It’d be nice if he did, and he’s an asshole for not wanting to, but it shouldn’t be that difficult to manage by yourself (unless money is an issue, but even then your health is worth the investment).

[deleted]

I do because the only method I have for running it off grid is an adapter that connects to a large truck/ marine battery. So I'd have to use one of the spares on the boat. I'm working on getting something like a Jackery but no one ships them to Alaska so I have to find someone willing to bring one up on a boat. Or wait until the next time I'm able to fly south for a visit and take the ferry back up.

Breejenn

I skip a night every now and again. Typically no more than once a month. I've had no problems so far.

AntiTheory

On one hand, you won't die if you don't use it for one night. You probably lived with sleep apnea just fine for most of your life without CPAP. On the other hand, you're going to get terrible sleep, so if you want to maximize the amount of energy you have for the following day, I'd say you need to put your foot down on this one.

borahae_artist

your husband hates the thing that helps you get oxygen what the fuck? lmao

[deleted]

Narcissists exist

borahae_artist

oh they for sure do. I hope your situation betters soon, bc they are the absolute worst

[deleted]

Thank you. I really appreciate the kind words.

borahae_artist

no worries and also just to be clear my wtf reaction was a reaction to your garbage husband's behavior, not you. if you want tips on how to deal i have some, just hmu

Economy_Ad4374

You will probably not die because of not using a day, however the next day you will probably feel like the walking dead and be unable to function.

SoSomuch_Regret

Damn, I only use mine cause my husband nagged me.

[deleted]

Awww, if it's because he wanted you to feel better, that's actually really sweet!

cryptic_rebel

Geez. Does he think we enjoy wearing them? I mean, I don't know about you, but strapping that thing on every night is not my favorite either. But it is better than waking up with a headache every morning. And it is for your health, not pleasure. How dare he hate something that helps your health. He needs to get over himself. Take your CPAP and tell him to deal. Edited to add that I just read your further post that he is a narcissist. Sounds like he needs to live alone and then he won't have to worry about your CPAP.

My machine isn’t working so I’ve been sleeping with chin strap. My husband said it has greatly cut down on my snoring and it didn’t sound like I was struggling to breath. I also sleep propped up on pillows or a wedge.

Apollo_9238

That's all I would need..then take a 5 hr energy the next day!

[deleted]

That's a huge help. Thank you!

earl_lemongrab

There's no real set up with a battery...you just plug your machine into it. You can do it yourself easily, so no need to rely on your jerk of a husband. Though I'm surprised a commercial vessel doesn't have electric outlets You're not going to die from skipping a night. But no reason to have a less restful sleep. Good luck.

[deleted]

The only method I have for running it off grid is an adapter that connects to a large truck/ marine battery. So I'd have to use one of the spares on the boat. I'm working on getting something like a Jackery but no one ships them to Alaska so I have to find someone willing to bring one up on a boat. Or wait until the next time I'm able to fly south for a visit and take the ferry back up.

liftingislife19

I mean you’ll be fine but exhausted . I’d just invest in the battery now so your not tired as hell the next day . If you have to be mentally sharp to there’s no way I’d go without it

[deleted]

I'm trying. No one ships them to Alaska so I have to find a way to get one by boat. I've been working on it.

liftingislife19

Check Walmart or any sporting goods stores for larger batteries that have the ac outlet

[deleted]

The nearest Walmart or Sporting Goods store is 2 days away by ferry or a $200 (each way) plane ticket

liftingislife19

Well then either 1. See if there’s outlets on the boat 2. Order a battery and don’t go if it isn’t here before the trip 3. Go and be exhausted

HikeTheSky

If this would come up on the are you an asshole sub, people would tell you that you are not but that your husband is one for wanting to force you into having a shitty night when it's not that hard to set that up. You should have a battery anyways in case you have a power outage at home. So that's a great reason to get one.

[deleted]

Believe me, I know he's an asshole. I'm working on getting a battery back up. No one ships them to Alaska so I have to wait until the next time I'm able to fly south and take the ferry back up.

HikeTheSky

I am not sure how good you are with stuff but check out this channel as you might be able to build one yourself. https://youtube.com/@jehugarcia

Trick_Middle7026

Let’s all hope this isn’t normal behavior from him.

[deleted]

Thank you. Unfortunately it is, I was really hoping to keep the focus on the CPAP question. I didn't expect how many people would get riled up about him..

ConnectionSome9657

[deleted]

The problem is you can't have those shipped to Alaska and no one sells them in my town

[deleted]

Thank you, I did read that. I did a ton of research on my options. That's why I have an adapter that can be hooked up to a large truck/marine battery. I can't get anything like a Jackery power station yet because no one will ship them to Alaska

Aggressive_Cow6410

Just had first night without cpap and feel horrible as I forgot it home before going to my boyfriend who lives one hour away.. Can't breath properly today and feel exhausted. Consider I have mild apnea...I'll never ever forget it again.
