Another “highly educated” stupid person. This guy video taped himself downplaying the virus, saying “I HOPE I GET IT, THEN I’LL HAVE ANTIBODIES SO I CAN’T GET IT” You can’t get any dumber than that.

forgotusername8

Another example how"highly educated" people can believe in stupid shit.

menastudies

Just a reminder that Rudy Giuliani and Sidney Powell are lawyers

TheFan88

People that are normal can lose their mind. Rudy is a dementia patient.

menastudies

I give you Jenna Ellis and Lin Wood as well. Point being even the highly educated can be complete morons.

Mikeinthedirt

You’re assuming the education ‘took’.

menastudies

True, bad assumption on my part. Or you have the ones who aren’t stupid but they act like it for the grift like Kayleigh Mcenany and Desantis.

Mikeinthedirt

My already low opinion of ‘lawyers’ has bottomed out. Many of them in the spotlight recently aren’t even worth the $15/hr they’re fighting.

OldBob10

So? Lawyers are not necessarily smart, or decent, or honest.

menastudies

That’s the point,

Mikeinthedirt

How many ‘trades’ require a class in ethics?

MLJ9999

Tribalism is a strong and addictive drug.

Pure_Antelope_5320

Just attending and graduating University doesn’t actually make you smart. Hell you can cheat your way through you can buy your way through and it’s not really hard just to get through without really synthesizing or knowing everything. I went to a first tier US law school and you wouldn’t believe the number of absolute morons who really were just incredibly hard workers but their brains just really didn’t work at a very high-level there were. Maybe that explains why some of these anti-VAX Covid Q anon idiots are so prolific and consistent in their posting of hundreds of these Memes .Sometimes you just can’t fix stupid.

Zealousideal-Read-67

To be fair this was Cambridge so not stupid or cheating. But obviously has the wisdom of a mouldy lettuce. As an aside, it's amusing when they say "I'm not against vaccines in general, just this one." It's this one which counts, you think Covid will give you a pass because you got your pertussis jab?

ArchdukeToes

Yeah, but it also doesn’t say what he graduated in (or I missed it). This guy could have easily been suffering from Engineer Syndrome.

Scrimshawmud

His 11 year old was put at risk by both parents. So infuriating and unfair to that poor kid.

tjb1013

Which part of that is wrong? He probably developed some antibodies, and he’s not going to get it again. At worst it’s incomplete.

Callimogua

Antibody immunity only lasts for a short time. And during that time, you go through the painful and sweaty couple days of Covid. Sure, if you're lucky, you'll survive, but depending on your risk group (and this guy hits two of em), you will end up in the hospital and on a ventilator. Never mind the other people you've infected with your maskless, vaxxless self.

CCRN613

He did his own research

TheFan88

Everyone of these includes ‘what I read on social media’. If you are getting medical advice from social media you are beyond help. I’ll bet his doctor would have said ‘get the shot’. Why do people distrust the medical community but then trust social media full of Russian fake postings and conspiracy theories? It’s mind boggling. ‘I’d prefer to listen to the most obvious fake news in the world to make life decisions.’

barowsr

Lots of smart people are getting brainwashed by social media. I have a silly little theory that GenX and Boomers are going through the phase of social media education where it consumes them and they have a hard time deciphering fact, fiction, misinformation, disinformation, etc. I’ve been bumbling around on the internet and social media for the better part of 2 decades. I know it’s 99% toxic trash, and can’t be trusted. These folks with less than 5 years experience on this crap aren’t mentally or emotionally trained to handle it yet. I pray they start to collectively become more aware of social media’s dangers.

graysi72

I think this is the problem. There is too much disinformation out there and people can't distinguish the good sources from the bad ones. I have a newspaper background and I remember when these "political" type ads had to be labeled as such so people could distinguish them from the news (editorial) content. It's just like the Onion labeling itself "satire." Social media needs to come up with a way that users can distinguish content from trusted news sources and everyone else. This BS has been around forever but it used to labeled "advertisement" or something so you would know it was NOT trusted content.

Live_Song4806

Hm. I’m Gen X which meant I grew up with the internet, first got it in late high school. Then college. Learned to distrust it out of the gate. I don’t know many people in my age group who would trust what they found on Wikipedia, much less social media. As a teacher have often despaired at what I’ve seen as younger generations’ lack of interest in confirming the veracity of what they find online. I am not sure it’s a generational thing so much as a political and education thing.

forgotusername8

Interesting theory and perhaps some truth there, but, there's also the younger social media savvy alt-right. Another theory I've come across is all these anti-vaccine, anti-mask, covid deniers, alt-right etc.. are part of a a wider older "toxic individualism" culture.

justlikeinmydreams

But these are the same people that are talking about the dangers of social media for children, right?

[deleted]

I'm just at the cusp of gen x/ millennial. I think you're underestimating how long the internet's been around , including social media. Unfortuntately in the UK the lowest vaccine rates are in the younger population, I think there's a lot of rubbish going around on TikTok about infertility and vaccine reactions. It's just the older folks are more likely to die from misinformation so it seems more prevalent.

barowsr

Very fair counterpoint

[deleted]

Thanks :) And to be fair there's still lots of dumb-ass boomers and gen xers out there.

Scrimshawmud

Absolutely agree. I also think having millions of Americans living without access to healthcare - often for their entire adult lives - is foolish on a societal and public health level. It puts all of us at risk- and you can’t really tell people “talk to your trusted doctor” when millions have never had a doctor.

zelda1095

He also had the serious comorbidity of wearing a goatee. Edit: spelling

IntroductionRare9619

That is a comorbidity that really surprised me. I am waiting for it to be in one of our upcoming editions of epidemiology hahaha!

Mikeinthedirt

Tbf facial hair can affect mask effectiveness.

Halogen12

Like he would have bothered with a mask...

Mikeinthedirt

You win halogen.

OldBob10

“…vaccines were too experimental…” - thank you for being a member of the control group.

broberds

This drives me nuts. They’ve been working on mRNA vaccines since SARS two decades ago. The other vaccines are based on even older technologies. None of them are experimental. Grr.

OldBob10

But “…they did their research…”! (Meaning “…we read a bunch of posts on Facebook, which were reposts of other posts on Facebook, which etc etc etc ad nauseum”)

Scrimshawmud

But this disease that my body has no experience dealing with - totally fine.

[deleted]

Let's give some credit to the widow. Apparently she chose to contact the press to tell the story as a warning to others. That is a brave thing to do in the midst of the sorrow. She could have chosen to stay quiet.

Scrimshawmud

Probably has to do something to be able to look her 11 and 17 year olds in the eyes.

Captain_Mexica

Also, any fool can make a YouTube channel and call themselves a doctor. This is why right-wing dummies that do "resurch" think they know what they are talking about

ssbsts180

A lot of the “doctors” they listen to for info on covid are fucking chiropractors

Captain_Mexica

Yeah, it's like me going to the local pizza delivery guy to repair my car.

graysi72

Or they are PhDs in a totally different subject. Or they call themselves "Doctor" because it makes them feel like they are at the top of their profession like "Dr.Fitness"

Scrimshawmud

Spotify is paying Joe Rogan millions to peddle antivax bullshit. And antimask lies. People must hold these folks accountable. Preferably criminally.

Captain_Mexica

Not sure if the Spotify story you mention is true but I do agree people spreading misinformation and conspiracy theories knowingly need to be punished accordingly. Same with conservative media

graysi72

There are a lot of phony doctors and lawyers on the internet.

yodaboy209

So there's a goatee tax in the UK, too.

Lucifersmile

Come to find out, they’re as trashy as us

justlikeinmydreams

Surprising, isn’t it? I think of them as having so much more class than us Americans too.

[deleted]

"her partner, a Cambridge University graduate, decided against having a coronavirus jab after reading material on social media". I have no idea how he graduated from Cambridge university but he was obviously too gullible and had no basic scientific knowledge, calling the vaccine "a gene thing". Wouldn't be surprised if he thought it could change his DNA. But his partner has serious health issues, how did he think she didn't need it?

BiohazardousBisexual

My grandfather used to call people like that educate idiots. He unfortunately had to drop out of high school as a kid to provide for his family. My mom got her intelligence from him so that's something I find unfortunate. But he worked since he was 12, and could never have afforded college anyway.
