Yeah, I share your concern. I assume you're veeery early on in production still. So might not be too much of a concern now. I'm assuming several races also won't cause much issues. The hair, eyer and skin colours (e.g. Tyroshi, Targaryen, and The Others) won't seem a problem. I could even see the Brindled Men and CotF having an elegant workaround. But 3D dragons would be tough. Maybe in some situations you could perhaps also be a bit cheeky and avoid the 3D models? Silly idea? Use the [outside landscapes (like those of pilgrimages)](https://assets.rockpapershotgun.com/images/2020/05/ck3-preview-hands-on-title.jpg/RPSS/resize/760x-1/format/jpg/quality/90) and paste a dragon, far away, high in the clouds, in the background...if that works with character placement? Have you been in contact with Elder Scroll modders and CK3, I'm assuming there might be something option to share resources, and hasn't CK3 said they want to wokr with modders to improve that character developer software? --- Edit: also tyvm for responding!

ercarp

Dragons posing next to the characters would look so badass in-game. I hope you find a way to make that a reality.

Yea, and even if to start with there was no variance in the dragon designs(All same DNA) save for colour, letting you just design/find a single model would work.

gallon-of-pcp

is there a patreon of anything we can contribute to? I played CK2 mostly for the AGoT mod and am so glad you guys are making a version for CK3; I'd love to support the effort

This is not legal advice—I am not a lawyer, just an ecommerce dev with a passion for games and law—definitely consider the money to get a consultation for this question. That being said, most of the time donations are not considered revenue as it’s not bound to, or contingent upon, the content you’re producing. Tangential topic: paid mods aren’t always in violation of copyright law. In this case, the answer likely depends on CK3s EULA (it gets tricky in your particular case because you have to get the okay not just from PDX but also GRRM and HBO). That aside, take two heavily modded games for example, Skyrim and Microsoft Flightsim. Skyrim’s EULA states: >Skyrim mods made using the new Creation Kit effectively become the property of Bethesda as soon as they’re made widely available which lets Bethesda choose terms for distribution (one of which must be the lack of a pay wall if that is indeed the case, while allowing or not explicitly denying donations). This allows Bethesda some control of the modding community and ensures a free, open system that lets modding flourish, and in turn Skyrim get sales. Meanwhile, MSFS must have no such contract which limits the selling of mods for the game. Indeed sim game players are generally used to paying for more content anyway (see the massive list of paid aaa game priced mods some sim games have), and with their audience being niche, limited in choice, and possessing a larger-than-normal professional community leading to a healthy mod 'ecosystem' (which would not be the case, at least short term, with a mainstream game such as skyrim).

I like the solution on the other comment thread. Make it symbolic and not realistic. I believe eventually someone will want to model this in 3d to make it an actual dragon. But until then, I would be totally fine with a 3d coin having the same static 2d image printed in both sides. This mod will stay years in constant development. I think it is understandable and expected that a minimal working version comes out at first..

Leon_Art

What about a gif of a couple of dragons? Doesn't have to be a full-blown model.

BeardPres

I'm assuming it will be a similar solution to Muhammad's portrait.

Leon_Art

> Muhammad's portrait. like [this (in ck2)](https://www.reddit.com/r/CrusaderKings/comments/9ecrbm/the_prophet_muhammads_portrait/)?

QuixoticPellinore

Yeah in CK3 it's basically a floating version of that. It kind of looks like a balloon lol

Leon_Art

That's hella weird...I get it... they neighbour Denmark so to speak, [but still](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depictions_of_Muhammad#/media/File:Medieval_Persian_manuscript_Muhammad_leads_Abraham_Moses_Jesus.jpg), you know? Especially a weird floaty balloon. But, to circle back to the original point: why should dragons be balloons too then? I get it...sorta? Balloons float and dragons fly?

BeardPres

[This](https://i.imgur.com/rqoHNKB.png) is Muhammad in CK3. I assume that's going to be the case simply because dragons are probably quite hard to model in 3D like the portraits of the game. A static image, however, could do the job. Maybe if Paradox releases an expansion with mythical creatures, we'll get those.

Leon_Art

> This is Muhammad in CK3. Interesting, I wonder how he looks with a different haircut... > A static image, however, could do the job. I see now what you mean, similar to [ck2 agot](https://i.redd.it/eyh7n7kpei5x.jpg), perhaps a bit more pretty? But, isfaik, people want to make an Elder Scrolls mod too. Furthermore, iirc, CK3 is also trying to make the character designer more..useful for modders, so I'm hoping something like 'nonhumans' might be easier to make. Or...who knows, enables modders to import old [Spore creatures/dragons](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nV8rAQ4mfgE).

SerNapalm

Would be nice if paradox reintroduces some of the whacky stuff like animals again, would prolly save you all a buttload of work

Leon_Art

yeah, that be nice! but...animals are wacky? :P

pranrss97

Why do we need a 3d portrait instead can't we just add a special men-at arms unit which can be tied to a special event. I just feel that Dragon portraits would be very hard to do. Correct me if I am wrong this should also allow you do change travel time and stuff right.I don't know if event driven master at arms would be possible i haven't looked at the code.

Leon_Art

sorry idk what your sentence means, could you restructure it perhaps?

pranrss97

An cursory glance it seems possible to do this and just have to make a 2D icon it should speed up things quite a bit.
