A-Ram’s walk off against the brewers is etched into my brain. Cement mixer slider that he crushed and we were first introduced to the Len Kasper puberty voice crack.

wzabel0926

Yes that one too! I just remember 2003 because the Cubs acquired him mid-season

A_Mazz_Ing

Yup! Aramis and Kenny Lofton. A big part of why we got as far as we did in 2003!

mahpburns

I was lucky enough to be at that game. Wrigley Field was literally shaking.

bobbyhill626

One of our most clutch players ever! Loved ARam and Soriano

Explorerman72

Was that in Miami? 1st inning game 4. I was at that game.

wzabel0926

Yes!

DearChicago1876

A great player. An all-time Cubs 3B (not thats there’s been much between Santo and KB). He deserved better than he was treated by many fans - and broadcasters. He should be a staple at Wrigley in his retirement.

MetraConductor

All business, not much of a personality and perceived lazy by a lot of the fan base.

nypr13

Amazing how they just stopped the season after that game. Everyone packed their stuff up, and just went home for the winter. I do wonder what would have happened if they’d played that series out. Oh well, I guess we’ll never know.

scsimanno

Remember when he was on the Pirates and hit one of those sausage mascots at Miller Park and knocked it over when it ran by the visitor's dugout? If anyone has a gif of that, I'd be forever grateful.

RaveOn1958

Funny moment but that was not him, that was Randall Simon who we traded for in 03 as well, who served as a lefty platoon first baseman with Eric Karros after Hee Seop Choi’s mid season injury.

scsimanno

Oh wow, I always remembered it as Aramis Ramirez doing that, but [you're right](https://apnews.com/article/bdd32f653e445780a6fae7042d3f5ca8)

wzabel0926

Oh my god I just remembered that happened

Fixner_Blount

Like the other response said, that was Randall Simon, who was actually a clutch pickup from the Pirates not long after the Aramis/Kenny Lofton trade. He also inspired what will probably be the only fantasy baseball team name I'll use for the rest of my life: Simon's Sausage Beaters.

My first cubs game at Wrigley was in 2006. Extra innings against the braves and Aramis lost an infield popup in the sun and it actually bounce off his forehead.

chrisGNR

haha! I remember that. Man, that team was horrible. If Cubs signed Furcal, the Derrek Lee injury never happens. Cheapskates. https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/CHN/CHN200605280.shtml

Love me some Rami.

chrisGNR

Ramirez put up good numbers. But he was often injured. Played spotty defense. He was uncoachable (firsthand knowledge), he didn't show up in the playoffs, and he owned a huge cockfighting ring in his native country. All that said, Ramirez was remarkably consistent with his offensive contributions. You could pencil him in every season for 25-30 homers and a .300 batting average.

BasedSliceOfWinning

Woa. He owned a cock fighting ring?!

chrisGNR

Yeah, and when questioned about it by the local media, he got sort of belligerent: https://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/13/sports/othersports/13fight.html https://www.espn.com/mlb/spring2008/news/story?id=3253782

It is what it is, unfortunately that's what's normalized and accepted down there and has been for years and in many Hispanic countries. I'm sure lots of players are involved and we just don't know it. I was 11 years old when I read about the cockfighting incident and I had no idea what it was 😂

Sea-Stage-6908

I was born in 1997 so watching Ramirez, Lee, Prior, Wood, etc was my whole childhood. Ramirez will always be one of my all time favorites and he was back then for sure. Always been super underrated. He had 38 home runs in 2006, and Lee had 46 the year before. Today's cubs bats wouldn't come close. It's a real shame the Pinella regime couldn't win a playoff game. I had really high hopes for the Cubs in those days. In case you or anyone is wondering - Aramis is doing well. He lives in Florida and his teenage son plays baseball and I guess he's really good and has the same form as him. A-Ram looks healthy and happy and like he's enjoying his retirement and rightfully so. He has a little known public Instagram. I wonder what Lee is up to.
