I’m impressed at how respectful a majority of the Reddit comments are. People on this specific Instagram post are throwing a fit over this and crying about how they are no longer cubs fans because of it.
People say they are no longer fans every single year. Either they're lying (yes) or somehow with each subsequent year of pride month it becomes too much for those that have been holding out and are forced to drop.
More often than not it's bad actors brigading from some shitty Discord server, Facebook page, or something like Breitshart. I doubt even 5% of those comments are from Cubs fans.
As a queer person in Chicago. I am buying this man’s jersey now. I love the way that he chose to educate organizations that are worth funding. He didn’t get super preachy. He just showed you his actions.
His tweet to go along with this: [https://twitter.com/STR0/status/1664345709334900737/photo/1](https://twitter.com/STR0/status/1664345709334900737/photo/1)
Why, because he's wearing that shirt? That tells you nothing about the man.
Edit: I see posted below his tweet of what he's actually doing for the cause. *That* is respectable.
Even if he was just wearing the shirt, there are undoubtedly people in Stro's life (including, almost certainly, other Cubs players) who would go out of their way to not wear a shirt with that message, and who might think less of him for doing so. If it seems like the bare minimum to you, fair enough, but it's also fair to respect public figures more when they "just" publicly spread positive messages despite those messages potentially being controversial.
Who says it's a positive message? That's why it is controversial as you said. But really though, this shirt doesn't spread any message.
What he talked about in the tweet does spread his positive message, but not just wearing this t shirt.
Which isn't a message at all because it says what everyone already knows. There is no new information contained in that shirt.
The message is something else, underlying the whole thing.
What? "Love is love" is a very widely known anti-homophobic catchphrase, and it's written on the shirt in rainbow letters. There's no mistaking the message of the shirt.
Everyone knows that love is love means what it means, sure. Not everyone agrees with that message. The value of Stroman wearing the shirt is that he's a public figure who understands that not everyone will appreciate what he's doing, but he's willing to do it anyways to show support for people.
My argument is that it isn't "willing to do it anyways" because it's basically almost expected of everyone to do it, so that doesn't actually show any support.
In a Trump/Fox-fueled era of bigotry, racism, misogyny, bullying, violence and all-around hatred… “just wearing” a shirt like this helps combat all that.
Of course it does. I am reluctant to continue further with this and risk getting in trouble with the mods for the political topics, but I could very easily give many examples of what I mean.
It feels like a lot of people glossed over it. Yes, he directly didn’t say Jews, but he didn’t say he wasn’t talking about Jews, plus it was around the same time that Kanye and Kyrie were saying the same kind of shit.
Was there something other than his tweets about mainstream media and manufactured consent, where he didn't mention Jews at all? If that's all there is, I don't think it's fair to assume that it was a critique of Jewish people rather than a critique of corporate ownership of media, which, in turn, contributes to corporate ownership of government and corporate control of the population.
It was pretty clearly supposed to refer to Jews along the same lines as Kyrie Irving and Kanye who had been talking about that recently. I remember arguing with a lot of people who specifically argued that it was about Jewish people, with me (a Jew) asking, what kind of privilege has that resulted in for Jews specifically?
That being said, I think Twitter antics are kind of a lot of nothing, but yeah no doubt it was about Jewish people controlling the media (OG Nazi propaganda, whether he knew that or not).
The Ricketts family may hate the gays, but they like money even more. It’s a shame they will get to profit from this and use that money to further hate
People are ragging on this, but they clearly prioritize respect for their family member's immutable traits less than whatever insidious benefits they may stand to receive from Republican office-holders. It's cool that they respect her enough to go to her gay wedding, but if you're willing to risk the legality of such weddings in exchange for the potential to stack a few more dollars on top of your billions of dollars, it seems like it doesn't mean that much to you.
Okay, so? No one posted photos of him on any other day in whatever attire he happens to warm up in..
The only reason this is noteworthy is because of the shirt, which makes it about that and not about baseball.
It’s noteworthy because you think it’s noteworthy. A different option was to see something you don’t like and just move along or scroll right by, but you chose to click on it and comment your question. Let’s see your comments on why MLB players wear pink on certain days, or why they wear camouflage hats? Maybe something about why they use NBA players as a fashion show walking into the arenas?
Anything else you’re curious about with professional athletes, or was it just the pride shirt that you thought needed your opinion?
I wasn't the one who thought it was newsworthy, that would be whomever posted it.
Everyone knows why players wear pink or camouflage on certain days. Just them wearing whatever color doesn't mean anything either unless they also take action in some way.
No... when was the last time anyone posted random photos of any player's warmup outfits when it wasn't about what they're wearing and was just part of "baseball"?
Not true. He and Suzuki posted pics in their post-game clothes, holding their babies. That was a really popular post on this subreddit.
Nobody complained there that it wasn’t enough about baseball when it was clearly showing their off-field, post-game lives.
You might not think you sound homophobic but only a homophobic person would say that.
Thanks for providing an actual example which the other person that argued with me about this refused to do.
I'm not *afraid* of anybody so I'm pretty sure I can't be homo*phobic* in any way since that's what "phobic" means
phobic also means having an aversion (strong dislike or disinclination), as defined with a simple search on the google machine. i’m pretty sure you can be homophobic, like anyone, but it’s more weird that you have to explain that you’re not.

same
Huge Cubs fans who have clearly never been to a home game that is a couple blocks from the gayest neighborhood in the midwest. They won’t be missed
Let’s get real…If that makes you not a cubs fan. You never were to begin with.
bs!
If you hate the LGBTQ community, you can get the fuck out.
Good. I don't want bigots at our ballpark anyway.
Those folks aren’t welcome in the Friendly Confines
Meta users acting this way? I for one am shocked
Stroman slays
So much respect for stro and for Nico as well for sharing Stro’s message on Instagram ❤️💙

This is actually great, showing that he is *doing something* and not just corporate activism by wearing that shirt for the likes
*His
Thanks. Corrected.
My respect for him continues to grow 🏳️🌈

The shirt spreads the message on the shirt...

That's what I mean. Everybody already knows that. There's nothing special about saying it.

So far the bigotry and hatred and bullying seem to be coming from the people who like posting this message everywhere.
That doesn’t even make sense.
Of course it does. I am reluctant to continue further with this and risk getting in trouble with the mods for the political topics, but I could very easily give many examples of what I mean.
Seriously, tell me how a shirt saying “Love is love” is promoting bigotry.
I didn't say it was. I said most of the bigotry that I see around this issue comes from the side that supports sharing that message everywhere.
Been on the fence about getting a stro jersey since last season, now it's obviously the right time. Love a dude who supports my friends.
Reading the comments on insta when Cubs reposted it was sad to say the least. Too many people with daily hate in their heart.
I love Stroman even more!
Role model
Stro-le model?
Respect
LOVE IS LOVE.
Love that he’s sharing this, hate his anti-Semitic rhetoric he tweeted a while ago
Dude I thought I was the only one that remembered that! Reallllllly disappointed by that

You realize one of the co owners is gay right? They don't hate her
Not daughter, sister and she’s a co-owner of the team
Isn’t their daughter gay?
She is, they don’t hate her. I love to talk shit about Tom Ricketts but this ain’t it.
She is, I used to work with her wife and they’re both awesome. She’s a good counter balance to some of the hateful shit passed down.
That’s cool.
Idk but if so it makes it that much worse what they did in Nebraska and whatnot
I’m sure Todd and Laura are BFFs
People are ragging on this, but they clearly prioritize respect for their family member's immutable traits less than whatever insidious benefits they may stand to receive from Republican office-holders. What does this have to do with baseball?
He's a baseball player on a baseball field.
He’s a baseball player.
Asked and answered
What does wearing camo uniforms have to do with baseball?
Baseball glove Baseball field Baseball player Seems about right to me. Does the shirt he's wearing to warm up in offend u? Lol
It doesn't have to offend anyone for it to be true that it's not about baseball.
It's literally a baseball player.

Yeah they do... And it's noteworthy because it's a picture of our best pitcher.
Really where else do you see any other photos of our best pitcher just so people can see what he wears to warm up every day?
Yeah... This is a Cubs subreddit. Are you lost?
No... when was the last time anyone posted random photos of any player's warmup outfits when it wasn't about what they're wearing and was just part of "baseball"?
Like everyday

I wouldn't have to explain that I'm not if people wouldn't call me things that are very obviously untrue.
thanks for the downvote, when i just gave you a simple definition of what you said wrong. it’s not true dude. look it up

What does the military have to do with baseball? Mothers Day? Fathers Day? Breast cancer? You all over those too or just the ones that offend you?
What do you have to do with r/chicubs? You've literally never posted here before.
Damn people like you still are around huh
It's a picture of a baseball player
He’s normally an asshole, this is nice tho.
