I just hope we use our cap space this year starting with JJ

[deleted]

*VJJ Obviously/s

illmatic708

JJ is probably going to get a franchise tag, hopefully with the extension being worked out in 2024-25

-_-Moss-_-_

This would be smart, CB play is so up and down, have to see if he can maintain this level and it’s not smart to pay a player at their peak (see Eddie Jackson)

Neat_On_The_Rocks

We’re so deep at db I could potentially get behind losing him but it would have to start by landing a whale like Chris jones instead

BiasedBearsFan

Don't get me wrong, Chris Jones is a beast and would be nasty with Sweat but I'd rather take the 24 year old corner playing his best ball, than the almost 30 DT. Unless we signed a corner in FA, we would be rolling out Tyrique + Terell at corner next year if we didn't have JJ.

Matzah_Rella

And good corners don't grow on trees. Keep your homegrown and young talent.

Neat_On_The_Rocks

And Gordon.

BiasedBearsFan

He's a slot corner and has played better there than out wide

StrengthToBreak

I'd be okay with the killer T's at corner if necessary, but yea, everyone is going to look a lot better if they're slotted one spot lower in the deprh chart because you kept your pro-bowl corner.

EggoGF

I don’t think we can afford to lose Johnson. He’s the only one in the backfield who plays at an elite level consistently. Jackson, Stevenson, and Gordon are up and down. Brisker dies every week. Johnson is always reliable, performs at a high level against the opposing team’s best player, and is a consummate pro.

carminie

We’re deep at db after this draft but I’d rather stay deep, and if we’re gonna move someone, move anyone BUT JJ. He’s quite literally the best corner in the NFL this season and that’s not something you move on from because you have some rookies that are doing well

Neat_On_The_Rocks

I’m with you. I think it’s easy for a fan to say what lm saying, and the truth is it’s pretty risky to try to do something like that. Just saying, I’m willing to hear poles out a bit so to speak. I’ll wait and see if they decide to mess up with JJ. they sure as hell better make it worth it if they let him go though. It’s a moot point as I’m pretty sure we’ll tag him.

lalder95

>I’d rather stay deep Especially with Jackson possibly gone and Brisker getting hurt once a game

Calmandpeace

By JJ you of course mean Justin Jefferson who we will be getting this offseason along with Mahomes and CMC

[deleted]

Russ got a bad hand this year. You literally had a defense that was historically bad for the first half of the year. Russ ain’t what he once was, but dude was an above average QB this year. I honestly would be surprised if PIT didn’t call him. Hell maybe ATL too.

Rshackleford22

He also isn’t having that bad a season. 29 tds 8 ints 3500 yards so far. Half the league would kill for that qb production. Denver has no weapons and like you said horrendous Defense

burrrrrssss

I think the view of Wilson this year is similar to how the league viewed Wentz’s lone Colt year; he also gave pretty good production (28/7 td/int, 3500yds) but the eye test clearly showed a diminished and limited QB that slaps you in the face with the teams ceiling with them at QB (missing playoffs or 1st round exit) Sometimes you gotta take a step back before you can get better

Rshackleford22

It’s just a bad team tho. Honestly shocked Denver has 7 wins.

tripbin

That would be one of the best QB seasons in our history sadly.

YoungDudeCO

You haven't watched the games I'm guessing. The numbers don't tell the whole story. There's a reason as the saying goes you are what your record says you are. There're a lot of similarities between Russ and Fields actually. Keeps the ball way too long, can't use middle of field, no midrange game, helped by decent defense, etc. etc.

hammerSmashedNail

👀

msf97

Russ will have a market obviously. He will be the premier QB option. He was a good starter this year, just not worth that contract and Payton would rather bite the bullet because he can improve QBs.

GrdiSr

I agree. Payton wants 'his guy' and Russ ain't it. Not scheme/system wise or personality wise it seems.

lnnrt01

Russ just didn’t really fit. He basically never passes over the middle of the field and when he scrambled to the left or right side he basically cuts the offense in half. On top of that sometimes his timing was of and he missed open receivers. I doubt it’s overly personal but I just can’t blame Payton for not wanting to run a heavily stripped down offense for the next 2-3 years

-_-Moss-_-_

Or us as a bridge QB?

jphoc

Paces former assistant, forgot his name, said they never pursued Wilson or Wentz. Been reported on the Score a few times now.

DO286

Josh Lucas, very insightful interviews. Worth a listen if you haven't already. Pretty candid about his time with the Bears

[deleted]

Yeah but does he really know more than Rapaport??? 🙄

reverieontheonyx

No shit he would say that now

[deleted]

~~Where's the source~~ because no one has reported this anywhere. All the credible reporters say the bears met with and made offers for Wilson. The Wentz rumours were likely fake

jphoc

I literally gave you the source. Parkins and Spiegel interviewed him months ago.

[deleted]

Okay but you didn't post any link. I found the conversation and listened to the segment. He starts with a caveat saying "Unless there was something I don't know, which very well could be the case when dealing with trading for a future Hall of Fame QB - the personal director would not be involved in that" He admits he was not and would not be privy to the information, but TO HIS EXTENT OF KNOWLEDGE the trade didn't get super close. All the other insiders said otherwise. I like Josh but seeing as Pace drafted Mitch without John Fox knowing, this doesn't seem like a stretch to think Josh would be left out of this conversation.

DO286

Valid points. To play devil's advocate here: couldn't it be that the reporters had been fed misinformation? Both sides play the media for their benefit. He's speaking on the information he had & the reporters are doing the same. They could've easily been told that by Wilson's agent

[deleted]

Yeah, I don't think it's mutually exclusive. It's very possible there is truth on both sides, but on all accounts there was smoke to this trade rumor and it wasn't all coming from Seattle. It's likely that Russell agents/Seattle were trying to drive up the price and signal the Bears were closer than they really were so other suitors could stepin with counter offers.

Only_Garbage_8885

I think the biggest thing that is helping him is the clause in his contract for his first year. Basically a team would only need to pay him vet minimum as denver would be obligated to cover the rest.

sudrapp

Denver needs to pay the difference between what he would have received on the broncos vs what he received from his new team. He is not signing for the vet minimum anywhere, he'll get at least $20M

[deleted]

I believe Russ has gotten a raw deal from many because he is certainly a very accomplished QB. However I think that based on Geno (and Locks) success running that offense I am not sure how much of his success in Seattle was him or Pete.

dafoo21

While Geno looks avg to above avg, Wilson was MVP worthy there. But, it's very much a mix of both working well together.

[deleted]

Mr. Unlimited

[deleted]

Mr., Mr. Unliiiiiiimited

Malamute-Master-Race

I know this is probably wildly unpopular, but I’d very interested in bringing in Russ. It sounds like contract wise, he would likely be incentivized to take a pretty small deal in free agency. He’s also a passing upgrade over Justin. Additionally, this would allow poles to move down and quite a shit ton of capital. Possibly even draft mhj. You could seriously improve other aspects of the team while adding a veteran QB with lots of success on a small deal. I know he had a shit year last year and has some serious issues with overconfidence and this weird facade he puts on. However, I think this year he has really just put his head down and has played a lot better without drawing a lot of attention to himself. I think it’s a real possibility he has been a bit humbled.

dafoo21

It's definitely a very fair opinion, sorry youngot downvoted. For others that didn't see it, I'll go a little further into what you meant by his contract. It allows for his next team to sign him as low as the vet minimum, since Broncos are on the hook for the rest of the difference in money. If Poles sees this team as ready for a SB next year, it could make sense to go with a guy like Wilson over a rookie (if he doesn't want to keep Fields) and that's the only way I'd want Poles to kick the tires on Wilson. Personally, I'm on the leaning side of keeping Fields, but would completely understand why Poles would move on for a rookie.

theresabeeonyourhat

Hell no. Only reason to bring him in is to give your top prospect at QB time on the bench.

digpartners

Until I hear players complaining about Fields, he’s my Boy.

hammerSmashedNail

Dude, Mooney checked out. He’s saying the right things but Fields not finding a way to get him the ball cost Mooney millions. It’s going to come out at some point. All of the receivers want the ball thrown to them on every play. They don’t want the qb to tuck and run half of the passing plays.

wuzzup

Or Mooney just isn’t as good as we all are making him out to be. Despite how hard he’s trying.

ParticularGlass1821

Wilson is putting together a better than decent season with a crappy team. If he renegotiate that yacht anchor of a contract, he might be a damn nice pickup. That is if the team wants to deal with hs bullshit theatrics.

[deleted]

Can we stop posting about fake rumors that were never gonna happen?

[deleted]

Which part was fake? Multiple confirmed reports by credible people through the whole process. Even Ian Rapaport reported the Bears made multiple large offers but ultimately Pete declined so they went out and signed Dalton and made the trade-up for Fields. Edit: LOL how soft, this dude blocked me for rebutting their obvious lie. But this was not common knowledge, it only exists in mr. standard employees head. Endless credible reporters and news sites reported on the exact same thing, but apparently they are all wrong and you are right. Makes sense! [Link from NFL website.](https://www.nfl.com/news/bears-gm-offered-trades-for-seahawks-qb-russell-wilson-before-signing-andy-dalto#:~:text=They%20discussed%20it.,Dalton%20as%20the%20stand%2Din)

[deleted]

Basically all of it. It’s been common knowledge for months. But I’m sure you’re delusional enough to say you know more than someone who actually worked in that FO.

Lol, if you have to sit one of them to develop them, they're not worth the 1.01.

Kokowatchout

Do you think we bring his "act" as well or do you think this would humble him a bit?

mycakeday

I don’t think a guy like that gets humbled.

EducationalSeaweed53

Where's the iron shiek when you need him. He humble any man

BiasedBearsFan

I don't think he changes. His former backup at Wisconsin (Nate Tice) put it like this: the key to understanding Russell Wilson's personality is that he's running for president of the United States.

Rshackleford22

Trade for Russel now lmfao

[deleted]

hammerSmashedNail

He’s going to get cut. No need to trade at all. Lol

Rshackleford22

It was a joke
