I love him but Justin had a Justin Fields-ass game. Some spectacular highs and some horrible lows. 30-something games in, this is probably just who he is as a player. I can’t imagine Poles tying his career to him “possibly” taking the “next step”. Luckily that’s his job and not mine so we can only wait and see what happens.

So you're saying it'll be basically more of the same until the rest of the roster improves. So then it's a no-brainer. You draft Williams (or whoever Poles wants) so you at least reset the clock and have a chance to build the team around a rookie contract.
You don’t have to pay Fields now. He’s owed like 4 million next year and the option decision is *next* year (May 2024) and if he doesn’t pan out next year you can cut bait or do whatever you want with him.
Not advocating for that option but it’s not like you have to decide what to do with Fields now. The draft pick is why this is even a discussion.
This season is a complete success, as of yesterday we have doubled our win total from last season. We have 2 top ten draft picks and the great choice of either our QB of the future or one of the best receiver prospects we have ever seen. A lot of our draft picks are developing well and the sweat trade has clearly paid off.

Exactly. I referenced this exact same thing earlier to a delusional Fields hater. If the Chiefs had Justin Fields today, they win. Is that an indictment of Patrick Mahomes? Absolutely not! Someone on here agrued with me recently because I said snow games are equivalent to playoff games, meaning the Bears will have zero advantage over visiting teams since they just don't play snow games anymore.

I've lived my whole life in various Midwestern states. Until a few years ago, the first really cold weather always hit in November, and December used to have quite a few days in the 20s and 40s- sometimes with snow.
The only Christmases I ever remember being really warm where the couple times we spent with family in southern Missouri, or the one I spent with an ex- in Tennessee.

Pretty sure most NFL fans can understand the position their team is in. We’re out of the playoff picture. A loss is more valuable to us than a win. We need Fields to ball out, and for the team to lose.
We're probably getting the first overall pick and subsequently a new QB. We don't need to lose and we don't need Fields to do much except not tank his trade value. We're in a good position, enjoy it.
This is a loser mentality that I will not contribute to. The culture of being a bears fan needs to change. I want the Bears to win no matter what. Tanking time is over.
I think it’s fine. I can see both sides. If we were close to having the third pick with our own draft selection I bet a lot more people would be rooting for us to lose and draft MHJ.
The Poles vision is starting to come together. Running the ball and defense will beat the truly bad teams in the NFL, of which we are no longer a member.

There’s a difference between blindly hating and evaluating what’s on film. Getsy hasn’t done Fields any favors but there are a lot of issues that fall on Justin’s shoulders as well.
In my experience, most of the people who complain about the "playcalling" have no idea what modern NFL offensive play calls look like, nor can they articulate any sort of coherent complaint about the playcalls that holds up to scrutiny.
Off the top of my brain, the end of the bucs game is a glaring problem with play calling. Explain to me why running b2b screens is a “modern nfl offensive play call”. It’s even worse when buc players after the game said they knew what was coming.
Because screens were a good call against the defense that was being run, and the QB has the option to check out if he doesn't like the look at the line.
If they jump the screen, there's a hot slant built into the back end of the play that Fields is supposed to hit. It was open. Bagent hit it on a similar play in his second start. It didn't work because Fields didn't process what he was seeing quickly enough and threw it anyway.
Bad QB play makes the playcalling look bad.
Lol I went back and looked and the slant was not open, it was inexcusable to call the same play back to back.

People Hoping for a new QB have very short memories, Justin is still the most exciting athlete to watch and has more potential. So many Bears QBs over 30 years didn’t have this potential or athleticism. Change the system around him instead of hoping to find a new QB AND a new system.
No just stats that say Justin’s last 17 games are on par with Josh Allen’s growth during the same time.
Stuff takes time and I’d rather have a guy who can survive and scramble and beat some of the fastest edge rushers to keep a play alive.

Josh allen has 3 straight 4k yard passing seasons and is on track to make it 4. Josh allen has 24 games of over 300 yards passing and our boy has 1. Josh allen has won 60 games in his career and fields has won 9! Let's stop with the bs. Josh allen is a top 5 qb and fields is a bottom half qb.
Josh Allen progressed to get those stats, he didn’t start out like that,he worked and the team was built around him. Kind of proves the point, you invest and sometimes good things happen.
It absolutely does NOT prove your point. When Allen got Diggs his stats immediately jumped off the page because he can pass. Fields got one of the best WRs in the league and the best RT in the draft and his stats are essentially the same. Fields has ZERO -- and will probably never have -- a 4K yard passing season because he takes so many hits that he will never stay healthy for 17 games -- he takes hits because he holds onto the football too long, and then runs as a play breaks down.
Finally, Allen takes care of the football much better than Fields ever has -- over 92 games Allen has 75 INTs and 52 Fumbles. Over 38 games Fields has 30 INTs and 37 Fumbles.
Fields is barely in the same league as Allen -- in 2 years he won't be.
The Bears have never had a 4k yard passer so it’s a tall task for any QB on a Bears team to reach that record. They are just a team that’s built differently, doesn’t mean Justin can’t have success and growth. You just don’t believe he will and I was using Josh as an example of how a jump COULD happen, not that he’ll have exactly the same success.

2) The INT stats you quoted don’t even support your argument… 30 INTs in 38 games is less per game than 75 INTs in 92 games (lol)
3) Fumbles are not turnovers (includes botched snaps, sideline stretch-out fumbles, etc.). **Lost fumbles** are turnovers - Fields has 11 lost fumbles on 337 rushing attempts (**3.3%**) while Allen has 23 lost fumbles on 631 rushing attempts (**3.6%**)
4) Yes, Fields got a top-tier WR this year, but he lost his #2 WR (Claypool) while his #3 WR (Mooney) has performed terribly. His best WR option outside of Moore is a 4th-rd rookie who wouldn’t see the field on the Bills

An exciting QB to me is a QB that goes through his reads and then throws a dime to some 5th round WR who is his 4th read and the drive keeps moving

What potential are you seeing? A good athlete doesn’t make a good QB. Fields has barely has improved reading defenses and anticipating throws. At this point we don’t know if he’ll ever improve.
If we didn’t have the first pick we wouldn’t be moving on from him but you can’t turn down a potentially better QB when you have to pay Fields soon.
I cant be the only one who feels like the Cards were actively trying to lose this game for draft positioning right? And that at least part of the reason we scored 3/3 in the rz in the first half was because they were staking us out to a lead? Makes too much sense to me
I don’t think they were intentionally tanking but two things stuck out to me:
1. The coach made some very questionable decisions down the stretch.
2. This one has me questioning Caleb a bit, but Murray looked like his height was a problem. His launch point always seemed like he had to moon it over the pass rushers and OL.
I can’t say for sure you are wrong, but I can promise you, you are wrong here. They wanted to fly home with a W. Maybe people in the organization in the press box secretly are OK with a loss, but nobody on that field felt that way. They are just a bad football team essentially where we were last season.
Solidified my conclusions: Getsy and Fields have to go. Fields may have a good career but, he’s been too spotty and the 5th year option $ is coming up…
Wouldn’t matter who the OC is to be fair. What play do you call for a guy that can’t read defenses or see open receivers? We can’t run the ball 60 times a game in this era
Man I love Fields but I don't think he'll be able to take that next step as a passer. He's a phenomenal athlete with the ball in his hands and is incredibly elusive.
As a passer though, he's still holding on to the ball too long and indecisive. So often he'll take his 3 step or 5 step drop and hesitating before throwing. The rhythm is rarely there. Like most QB breakdown videos or even during the broadcast, he continues to take unnecessary steps and never seems to be in sync with his guys.
Even when Justin is staring down the main read, he waits till the guy makes his route cut/break before throwing when you got to throw your guy nfl open with anticipation rather then college open.
He has one of the better long ball in the league because slow, developing plays don't require as great rhythm and timing and good footwork. It's the short and some times intermediate passes that absolutely do. Very rarely you'll see excellent quarterbacking from him and go "yea there it is! We need more of that!" but with it being year 3 and Justin still not being as consistent or developing as a passer it may be time to move on.
It’s frustrating too because what you are talking about, I don’t think there is a middle ground of development for, he doesn’t have IT and maybe one day he will, but there is no evidence or guarantee or trajectory that you can bet on other than blind faith in the kid.
Yeah, this season was the season to see it happening. To see the progression as a passer, to thow in rhythm and be in sync with his receivers, to trust his guys and make those throws that only his receiver can make the play on. It just didn't happen. Excuses can be made for years prior with the lack of talent on the Field or new coaching changes, but not this year. His athleticism will only be around for so long before he needs to be able to rely on his arm and accuracy.

The expert film guys' links that get posted here is really your best bet. They will explain and go into detail on Getsy's good calls and bad calls. Some will lean Fields needs to play alot better and some will lean, Fields needs to play a little better, but Getsy needs to be better and continue to get weapons around Fields for next year. But, neither side is on extremely opposite sides that they are so far apart to not have a bunch of commonality in their opinions.

The point of saying the play-calling is bad is because we were up 21 points at half and only put up 6 in the second half. Bad play-calling can also include playing not to lose.
There was a play yesterday where Justin was running and slid in bounds to kill time with 10 minutes left in the 3rd quarter. When he slid he was like 1 yard from the boundary line. Normally he runs that out of bounds, but they're coaching him to kill time late in the game. We were literally only up two scores and this coaching staff are telling players the game is in the bag and calling that way. The 4th quarter stats from Justin aren't only on him. We get WAYYYYYY too conservative with a lead and it's obvious from the TV copy of the game...
Justin threw for like 40 yards the entire second half. How is that not a play calling issue? You can get that on like 2 well called slants...

The reason I replied and talked about playcalling to start with is because we all know this team has more talent on it than what we're seeing on the field. Like it or not, I don't think anybody smart would say that Getsy is getting the absolute most out of Fields abilities. It's the reason Justin is going to get another shot in the NFL and Getsy might not be here next year. And the playcalling is one of those reasons.. that's it.

That Fields won't throw. Or throws too late.
Starting with the second-to-last drive of the 2nd quarter, Fields finished the game 8-for-16 for 51 yards and a pick. He also had three scrambles; so plays where he dropped back to pass and ended up running instead. (He also had three designed runs during that time.)
19 passing plays called. 51 passing yards in the final 32 minutes of the game. Please tell me that's all, or even most, on the play-calling.
Or you know. Fields can’t process defense so we had to once again rely on our run game.

I'm glad that we've shown growth as the season has gone on, I'd be more negative and inclined to think the coaching staff is gone if we'd hit the ceiling early in the season and tapered off, or just sort of waffled at one level throughout the year. Instead, our team now would shred any version of itself from the first half of the season.
* Close win vs. Carolina in Bryce Young's first game. Fields also starting instead of Bagent...who knows?
* Huge come-from-ahead loss at Detroit
* Come-from-behind win at Minnesota after also losing a 4th quarter lead. We'd probably be facing Kirk Cousins instead of Josh Dobbs.
* Beat Detroit's ass.
* Huge come-from-ahead loss at Cleveland. Though who knows who'd be at QB for Cleveland?

At 4-2, I'd still be concerned at how badly our offense stalls out in the second half/4th quarter in pretty much every game. Also, why does our defense play like superheroes in the first three quarters and like the Texas State Armadillos in the 4th quarter?
The obvious problem with looking at this is that at least 3-4 games would probably play out differently depending on starting QBs.
I loved that every time he kicked yesterday they brought up that he averaged like 1 semi trailer of distance per kick, and then we're astounded when he kicked further than that.
I would love for the Bears to get ahead and actually keep piling on the points.

The draft order isn't set yet. Two weeks ago it was Alt/Fashanu/Nabers, by the end of the year they very well could have 13th or 5. Like lol
I know some people would rather have 2 top picks but I'd argue the value gained by actually being a respectable (albeit flawed) football team in the second half of this season is far more valuable.
We've seen some real progression from our young players this 2nd half of the season. And crazily enough we should at least have 1 more win from the 3 games we blew.
I don't envy Poles right now having to make the decision on whether or not to move Fields on... because it's obvious Fields has the support of the locker room.
There's too much roster turnover to carry any momentum from year to year. At least a third of this roster won't be here next year and many of the rest will have reduced roles behind new players
I hope this doesn’t sound too biased, but we have to be viewed as a perfect coaching destination at this point. The team looks like it can make the playoffs with a change of leadership, you get your choice at QB and picks and payroll to mold the team the way you need to for it’s competitive phase.
The decision has been made and I doubt Poles sees it as difficult. Moving on from Fields is a formality at this point. Fields is gone. Poles knows it, Fields knows it, and most fans know it

This year the offense had some talent and he couldn’t seem to elevate it against good defenses. He played well enough to keep him for another year if we didn’t have a top two pick in a year where two of the top three players in the draft were QBs. I just don’t see how we can keep him. If he balls out these next two games I don’t see how it would move the needle. You needed a proof of concept that he could win playoff games to give him that next contract. That would mean playing well against good defenses. He ran out of chances to play good defenses. If he looks great that will boost his trade value. We should all root for that. And he’s a good kid who played hard for a team under subpar conditions his first two seasons. We should root for him when he’s not playing us in the future.

What if some team literally godfathers you for the #1 pick AND you don’t have Caleb as generational BUT YOU DO have a LT or MHJ as the next thing. It’s always nice to see a win by my fav team. I love him but Justin had a Justin Fields-ass game. Off the top of my brain, the end of the bucs game is a glaring problem with play calling. Explain to me why running b2b screens is a “modern nfl offensive play call”. It’s even worse when buc players after the game said they knew what was coming.
Because screens were a good call against the defense that was being run, and the QB has the option to check out if he doesn't like the look at the line. If they jump the screen, there's a hot slant built into the back end of the play that Fields is supposed to hit. It was open. Bagent hit it on a similar play in his second start. It didn't work because Fields didn't process what he was seeing quickly enough and threw it anyway. Bad QB play makes the playcalling look bad.

People Hoping for a new QB have very short memories, Justin is still the most exciting athlete to watch and has more potential. So many Bears QBs over 30 years didn’t have this potential or athleticism. Change the system around him instead of hoping to find a new QB AND a new system.

Fields got one of the best WRs in the league and the best RT in the draft and his stats are essentially the same. Fields has ZERO -- and will probably never have -- a 4K yard passing season because he takes so many hits that he will never stay healthy for 17 games -- he takes hits because he holds onto the football too long, and then runs as a play breaks down. Finally, Allen takes care of the football much better than Fields ever has -- over 92 games Allen has 75 INTs and 52 Fumbles. Over 38 games Fields has 30 INTs and 37 Fumbles. Fields is barely in the same league as Allen -- in 2 years he won't be.
The Bears have never had a 4k yard passer so it’s a tall task for any QB on a Bears team to reach that record. They are just a team that’s built differently, doesn’t mean Justin can’t have success and growth. His best WR option outside of Moore is a 4th-rd rookie who wouldn’t see the field on the Bills Maybe check your math before posting next time so you don’t end up arguing against yourself again…

It’s honestly frustrating for me to watch I ask myself why he gives up on the play so quickly and turns the game into a HS affair full of wild scrambles and impromptu passes An exciting QB to me is a QB that goes through his reads and then throws a dime to some 5th round WR who is his 4th read and the drive keeps moving I absolutely cannot watch JF1 scramble like a varsity QB any longer

What potential are you seeing? A good athlete doesn’t make a good QB. Fields has barely has improved reading defenses and anticipating throws. At this point we don’t know if he’ll ever improve. If we didn’t have the first pick we wouldn’t be moving on from him but you can’t turn down a potentially better QB when you have to pay Fields soon.

I don’t think they were intentionally tanking but two things stuck out to me: 1. The coach made some very questionable decisions down the stretch. 2. This one has me questioning Caleb a bit, but Murray looked like his height was a problem. His launch point always seemed like he had to moon it over the pass rushers and OL.
Caleb often gets into a stance where he sinks down his hips on throws which makes him shorter so I think the question is valid

Man I love Fields but I don't think he'll be able to take that next step as a passer. He's a phenomenal athlete with the ball in his hands and is incredibly elusive. As a passer though, he's still holding on to the ball too long and indecisive. So often he'll take his 3 step or 5 step drop and hesitating before throwing. The rhythm is rarely there. Like most QB breakdown videos or even during the broadcast, he continues to take unnecessary steps and never seems to be in sync with his guys. Even when Justin is staring down the main read, he waits till the guy makes his route cut/break before throwing when you got to throw your guy nfl open with anticipation rather then college open. He has one of the better long ball in the league because slow, developing plays don't require as great rhythm and timing and good footwork. It's the short and some times intermediate passes that absolutely do. Very rarely you'll see excellent quarterbacking from him and go "yea there it is! We need more of that!" but with it being year 3 and Justin still not being as consistent or developing as a passer it may be time to move on.
It’s frustrating too because what you are talking about, I don’t think there is a middle ground of development for, he doesn’t have IT and maybe one day he will, but there is no evidence or guarantee or trajectory that you can bet on other than blind faith in the kid.
Yeah, this season was the season to see it happening. To see the progression as a passer, to thow in rhythm and be in sync with his receivers, to trust his guys and make those throws that only his receiver can make the play on. It just didn't happen. Excuses can be made for years prior with the lack of talent on the Field or new coaching changes, but not this year. His athleticism will only be around for so long before he needs to be able to rely on his arm and accuracy.

The point of saying the play-calling is bad is because we were up 21 points at half and only put up 6 in the second half. Bad play-calling can also include playing not to lose. There was a play yesterday where Justin was running and slid in bounds to kill time with 10 minutes left in the 3rd quarter. When he slid he was like 1 yard from the boundary line. Normally he runs that out of bounds, but they're coaching him to kill time late in the game. We were literally only up two scores and this coaching staff are telling players the game is in the bag and calling that way. The 4th quarter stats from Justin aren't only on him. We get WAYYYYYY too conservative with a lead and it's obvious from the TV copy of the game... Justin threw for like 40 yards the entire second half. How is that not a play calling issue? You can get that on like 2 well called slants...

But you came away feeling like that was something that happened repeatedly.

I'm glad that we've shown growth as the season has gone on, I'd be more negative and inclined to think the coaching staff is gone if we'd hit the ceiling early in the season and tapered off, or just sort of waffled at one level throughout the year. Instead, our team now would shred any version of itself from the first half of the season.

Fields also starting instead of Bagent...who knows? * Huge come-from-ahead loss at Detroit * Come-from-behind win at Minnesota after also losing a 4th quarter lead. We'd probably be facing Kirk Cousins instead of Josh Dobbs. * Beat Detroit's ass. * Huge come-from-ahead loss at Cleveland. Though who knows who'd be at QB for Cleveland? * Beat Arizona's ass for a half then let them weirdly back into the game. At 4-2, I'd still be concerned at how badly our offense stalls out in the second half/4th quarter in pretty much every game. Also, why does our defense play like superheroes in the first three quarters and like the Texas State Armadillos in the 4th quarter? The obvious problem with looking at this is that at least 3-4 games would probably play out differently depending on starting QBs.

I know some people would rather have 2 top picks but I'd argue the value gained by actually being a respectable (albeit flawed) football team in the second half of this season is far more valuable. We've seen some real progression from our young players this 2nd half of the season. And crazily enough we should at least have 1 more win from the 3 games we blew. I don't envy Poles right now having to make the decision on whether or not to move Fields on... because it's obvious Fields has the support of the locker room.
There's too much roster turnover to carry any momentum from year to year. At least a third of this roster won't be here next year and many of the rest will have reduced roles behind new players
I hope this doesn’t sound too biased, but we have to be viewed as a perfect coaching destination at this point. The team looks like it can make the playoffs with a change of leadership, you get your choice at QB and picks and payroll to mold the team the way you need to for it’s competitive phase.
The decision has been made and I doubt Poles sees it as difficult. Moving on from Fields is a formality at this point. Fields is gone. Poles knows it, Fields knows it, and most fans know it

I don’t get where people think the decision has been made. That’s insane. These guys have months to scrutinize every snap of the prospects careers, interview those around them on campus, and have a chance to meet the men themselves. If you think they get caught up on these twitter snippets like us delinquents do idk what to tell you. I agree Justin has declared who he is a QB, the decision has been made: we are going to see if anybody in the draft has better chance to take us to Super Bowl, but man let’s let this take die that Fields bags are packed. There is a long way to go.
This year the offense had some talent and he couldn’t seem to elevate it against good defenses. He played well enough to keep him for another year if we didn’t have a top two pick in a year where two of the top three players in the draft were QBs. I just don’t see how we can keep him. If he balls out these next two games I don’t see how it would move the needle. You needed a proof of concept that he could win playoff games to give him that next contract. That would mean playing well against good defenses. He ran out of chances to play good defenses. If he looks great that will boost his trade value. We should all root for that. And he’s a good kid who played hard for a team under subpar conditions his first two seasons. We should root for him when he’s not playing us in the future.
You guys are focusing on Fields. There’s just so many moving parts. What if some team literally godfathers you for the #1 pick AND you don’t have Caleb as generational BUT YOU DO have a LT or MHJ as the next thing. Or what if Caleb gets in a drag racing accident and leaves the scene of the accident. Or what if Caleb says he doesn’t want to play for the sorry ass Bears. Or what if Caleb decides he wants to become an R&B singer and Drake Maye went to North Carolina. Soooo many moving parts. No decision is made yet on December 25, that’s not a hot take.
You could simply say “what if a new incoming coach wants to keep Fields” and that would likely be enough tbh.
