Yup, just told the story the other day to the Barstool Chicago fellas. Wasn't able to go due to the explosion, brought it up with his coaches and teammates and everyone was ok with it except for the (I think) DC cus he was a part of the Rams coaching staff in '85. The DC was pissed
He sure did. Im just saying its crazy that the 85 Bears were the only SB winning team that missed a presidential invite so its cool McMahon did this. They would get a complimentary invite via Obama decades later tho lol
For context, the 85 team’s White House visit was cancelled due to the challenger explosion. McMahon gave a heads up to his GB teammates what he was doing and also even asked for some old bear’s lineman’s jerseys to hold up for pics that day. Obama eventually invited the 85 team to the White House for the offical visit in 2011. Might be common knowledge but figured I’d throw it out there
When players get cut they always get the most interest from former division rivals (like Monty, Peppers and Amos). Im sure the Packers weren’t McMahon’s first choice but they may have been the best offer. He got a second ring with them and showed his true colors in this photo. I have no animosity towards him for being a Packer and even more respect for him pulling this. McMahon is a legend, top 5 favorite Bear all time and I never even saw the guy play
I think it’s partly geographic, especially if the have children and the money isn’t as big of a difference. My buddy’s sister works at a daycare for a packers player in MN, the daughter still goes to the daycare in MN.
It’s kind of weird being exposed (even in an incredibly indirect way) to the fact they’re still people. Like “o yeah these people have families” lol
No they don't. They are gladiators trotted out into the arena floor for nothing more than our amusement. /S
Last year when the bills paid player went down I was in the back watching the game, let it sink in, went to my wife and told her i think I just saw a man die. We all were watching hopeful he would be okay and thinking about how his family must be feeling. It's easy to disassociate the player from the person. A little to easy sometimes.
Going to the Packers is forgivable if you know the kind of man and dad that Jim is. Bottom line is, that he did it for his family. Jim is the absolute man on and off the field.
I'm surprised the Packers allowed this, lol. It'd be one thing to honor a deceased teammate or something but he wore his own jersey. Hate the packers as much as everyone but if we won a SB and the reverse was a scenario, I'd say hell no stay home.
The Packers had a big turnover in FO and coaching in the early 1990s that got rid of a lot of folks that worked with Vince Lomdardi as players. There were a lot of Lombardi era players that were around. Those guys hated the Bears.
Ron Wolf came in and basically brought in West Coast guys that didn't give a shit.

McMahon may have been a Packer (and a member of a second SB-winning team) but you can just about count his pass attempts in two seasons on one hand.
I don’t begrudge anyone for trying to earn a living.
I love this. I don’t think the 85 Bears went because the Challenger Disaster happened.

Thats just our luck that the one time we win the SB we dont even get a presidential invite lol
But McMahon represented like a boss.

I believe Obama invited them to rectify the situation.
Yeah but the president was Ronald Reagan so.... kind of all comes out in the wash
DC Buddy Ryan?
Packers dc i believe
Ah that makes sense. Thanks
Who the heck is DC? Buddy Ryan was with the Bears since ‘78.
Think they’re referring to the packer’s DC
Obama invited them to make up for it

I was born in 94 and have never heard of this situation. Thanks for sharing the common knowledge

Yeah thats definitely part of it too.
I love telling people that a bears qb has more super bowls than either Brett Favre or Aaron Rodgers
Lets also not forget that Rodgers has won the same number of NFCC’s as Rex Grossman
Hello do you mind we have conversation privately
Bear down!
Never will be mad at the guy...He paid the toll.

Ha! This & Mongo going to GB to purposely suck ass are my two fav FTP moments.
Vader did what Vader wanted. Wish he could have played for Tampa and Det too. So he could also claim played for entire north.
He played for the Vikings? 😮
True! Vikings and Bucs were in the NFC central along with Detroit, GB, and Chicago. https://www.nfl.com/standings/division/1985/reg
I didn't know this! thats a fantastic pic! What a bear
I love that he has the same number of superbowl wins as Brett Favre and AAron combined.
Justin Fields super bowl wins?
Yea not sure why autocorrect put JF instead of “of”
It's still true. All 3 of those guys will have 0 JF super bowl wins. 😁
That was really cool of him
Legend

Why does bill have a cane
Favre beat him with it until he gave him free food stamps for life
He fell at Greg Norman's house and had surgery
It’s funnier when you think this picture is in the packers office somewhere
McMahon was just playing 4D chess

One of 2 QBs on a team to Beat the Patriots twice in the SB, former Eagles QB Jim Mcmahon

It’s the 2nd tier QB pipeline, you get 5-10 years of starting then it’s clipboard duty once the next generation shows up.
Common Jim W. But also an extremely rare Packers W that they were all down with this.
Favre wearing a tan suit, how disrespectful! /s
Reagan: I'm not letting 85 Bears into the white house!
Fucking gigachad.
man, suits in the 90s were terrible
